1st DVD you ever watched?

I am pretty sure that the first DVD I saw was "The Matrix" on a little, feeble Sony player back in 2000 i think. it was in an old studio i used to live in in CT. no theater system or anything like that, but i know i wanted something that utilized the meduim to its fullest and i think this was one of the best back then.

when i got my little Sony 'ht in a box' i am pretty sure i wanted to utilize audio and video and popped in "Die Hard" 5-Star. but, that was only the first on a new system (that was also the time when i took DVD's a little more serious) and then it wasn't until i moved a DVD rack away from my entertainment unit and re-organized that i started seriously collecting.

so what was the 1st you ever saw and tell the tale (if there is one)?

That would have to be Golden Eye. but in like 98 i think..... watched in on my computer.

Randy Miller III 03-21-06 01:00 PM

The Matrix for me, also around that time, at a friend's house.
Of course, I didn't have my own player at the time, but I soon saw the light.

Now I have like 10 times the number of DVDs he has. :D

Meet Joe Black. My GF(wife now) at the time picked it up when I purchased my 1st player in May of 99. I think I slept through about 80% of the movie. The next night we watched The Waterboy.

SLeopold 03-21-06 01:02 PM

The DVD from the first issue of Total Movie that had the Troops short film on it.

digitalfreaknyc 03-21-06 01:03 PM

US Marshalls. First one I ever bought. I was amazed...but wondered why my laserdiscs sounded so much better. :) This was (I believe) November 1998.

ernestrp 03-21-06 01:04 PM

Carrie

awmurray 03-21-06 01:04 PM

I believe mine was Dumb and Dumber. I remember getting it as part of my Columbia House free titles...

BrentLW 03-21-06 01:09 PM

Dirty Dozen. I bought it when I bought my player a Panny A-110. I no longer have either. I sold the DD to upgrade and the Panny, like a lot of its brothers died an early death.

My first DVD after I added surround sound was the American tragedy known as Godzilla lol I was leaning over to correct the sub dials and that foot came down and the bass almost knocked me flat on my butt. I didn't realize the sub was powered up.

Willh51 03-21-06 01:12 PM

My friend had a player before I did so I think the original Halloween disc was the first one I watched.

My first dvds were Jurassic Park III and Planet of the Apes Remake, and I watched in that order. I used to have my dvds on a rack by purchase date. Ah the days.

Greg613 03-21-06 01:12 PM

Starship Troopers on my old computer. I thought that was awesome.

Morf 03-21-06 01:14 PM

Blade, also on my computer. I still remember buying it from Wal-Mart, and needing the electronics department guy to unlock the case for me to pick out my DVD.

onabudget 03-21-06 01:17 PM

"Jerry Maguire" which came free with my then newly bought DVD/LD combi player.

It's been almost 10 years -eek-

cisman 03-21-06 01:19 PM

Tombstone for me:)

Mr. Cinema 03-21-06 01:24 PM

The first title I ever bought....Rush Hour.

dx23 03-21-06 01:26 PM

Dead Man on Campus, back in 1998.

DeanoBKN 03-21-06 01:29 PM

Goldeneye, the old snapper editon.

joshtown 03-21-06 01:32 PM

My very first was Ravenous, which I rented, but that was viewed on an old tiny T.V. I wasn't impressed with the video or audio quality, so I decided to buy a bigger/newer television set. My first on that, and 2nd DVD in general, was The Matrix, which I purchased.

M Polo 03-21-06 01:33 PM

First one I bought and watched was Big Daddy followed by Friday. This was late 1997. Rushed home and watched them on my freshly bought Panasonic Home Theater In A Box DVD/CD player that back then cost me $700, lol....

ShagMan 03-21-06 01:39 PM

Um, this would have been Bug's Life or Matrix... probably Bug's Life. Played on a RCA dvd player I think, on a 27" tube TV. I remember buying a $300 player, so it was right when DVD's came out.

The Monkees 03-21-06 01:41 PM

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

In like 1998 or 1999, I think it was 98

LeeVing 03-21-06 01:50 PM

Evil Dead Elite version....bought it before i owned a dvd player. Had to rent a player to watch it, i rented others but didnt have the hookups to get around Macrovision. ED was the only one that didnt have Macrovision. watched it about 20 times that weekend.

chess 03-21-06 01:52 PM

The Matrix

Preordered it before I even owned a player...and made a point to play it first. Loved that flick.

Nebiroth 03-21-06 01:55 PM

To my eternal shame I have a feeling it was the dire Godzilla remake.

And it came in one of those weird booksize jewelcase style DVD cases, that never caught on (pity cos they save a lot of space)

Pretty sure it was this. Either that or Mars Attacks.

Think it was 1999, which was pretty early for the UK.

The player is still my main machine, a venerable Pioneer 717 - champagne gold!

charlesp138 03-21-06 01:55 PM

First DVD I ever watched was Any Given Sunday on a rented player hooked up to my 19" TV.

Purchased my own player a week later and rented copies of Batman Returns and American Psycho.

I still remember how small the DVD rental section was at my local Blockbuster, and that was back in 1999.

Rammsteinfan 03-21-06 01:58 PM

Starship Troopers in early 98 I think when I got my first dvd player.

Lemdog 03-21-06 01:59 PM

Wasn't American Psycho released theatrically in 2000? :hscratch:

eXcentris 03-21-06 02:00 PM

Godzilla. The store I bought my HT gear from lent me a couple of DVD's to test some speakers. This was back in 1998 I believe.

Steve Phillips 03-21-06 02:00 PM

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE. It was in the first batch of Warner titles released in 1997. I still have that version; never upgraded.

marcellusk 03-21-06 02:08 PM

Starship troopers. In 98 when i got my 1st dvd player. A sony one disc that doesn't play certain dvds now. But when i first saw how clear Starship troopers was i knew i would be hooked on dvds

kms_md 03-21-06 02:17 PM

KatjaKassin 03-21-06 02:18 PM

1st Hellraiser: Bloodline
2nd Creepshow
3rd Dead Alive

CKMorpheus 03-21-06 02:19 PM

The Matrix on my uncles DVD player on his computer. I was hooked.

RM811 03-21-06 02:22 PM

Thomas Crown Affair at my parents house.
First DVD I bought was End of Days at Blockbuster for $5.00
Those were the days when Blockbuster was actually a great place to buy used DVD's at cheap prices. I remember they used to have 3 for 15 or 3 for 20 almost regularly.

GoldenJCJ 03-21-06 02:25 PM

The General's Daughter around Christmas 1998.

Sekots 03-21-06 02:29 PM

Cast Away, we rented it from a store and had no idea how to work it.

joltman 03-21-06 02:30 PM

I believe mine was From Dusk Til Dawn. I remember renting it soon after we got a computer with a DVD-ROM, back in 98 I believe. It was one of the few DVDs Hollywood Video had at the time on the one, maybe two spinner racks of DVDs that they had :)

apchrist 03-21-06 02:47 PM

I'd say Golden Eye back in about 1997 when I got my first player for around $700 the local CD store only had selection of about 15 movies on DVD's

MovieExchange 03-21-06 03:04 PM

Like so many others, my first owned / watched DVD was The Matrix. I was celebrating moving from a $6/hr job (after 2 years) to one with a starting pay of $12.25/hr. I bought my first DVD player and The Matrix, which had just come out that week.
