Here's an idea for special feature junkies (myself included): petition Fox to release a supplemental slim case box set with the special features of all nine seasons on six discs. We get what we want and they get more money.

OK, so I caved in and bought the new thinpak versions of seasons 2 and 3. I haven't watched the DVDs yet, but the new packaging is cool and it's gonna look real odd next to that gigantic season 1 box I bought a while back.

I wonder if the the decision to lop off the 7th extra features disc had something to do with Chris Carter's (and possibly David Duchovny's) ongoing battles with FOX over the profits or whatever was going on (I haven't been following much on that).

I also wonder if these extras are being held back to make the (hopefully) inevitable box set more sought after for those of us who couldn't drop $100/set. I guess we'll see...

I bought all of those "Mythology collections " when they came out because I got them for $20 a piece compared to $75+ for each season and now the season sets are going to be $24.99 at Best Buy? Grrrrrr....

I already had a big-box S2 laying around from the wherehouse.com 30% sale a while back. So I went ahead and paid the $41.99 at BB for the big-box S1 and S3. Too bad, I liked the new packaging better (and saving $6 per set + $15 would have been nice).

I have no problem missing out on bonus features with the savings involved. I guess if someone really wants the bonus features, this is the time to start looking for bargains on the old sets. I'm sure the prices will come down on those now as well to get rid of stock.

I picked up the box sets from Amazon and finally got them today. I'm psyched about the price and all, though I wish I had gone to a Best Buy and found the originals for the 41.99 people are talking about, I would have picked them up instead (I'm a total special features junkie). I definitely think cutting out the documentaries is a bit lousy, as that level of features (commentary, deleted scenes, documentaries) is common place for TV box sets now that are priced even lower (simpsons, family guy, friends, etc.).

Though I wouldn't buy a full-on every season box set just to get the documentaries, I would buy a separate "bonus features" set that had nothing but the special features from the original box sets that weren't included on the new releases.

I wonder if Fox is going to do what they did with Buffy and put together one huge boxset sometime soon. Part of me would be pissed off seeing as I already own the entire series, but the other part of me would like to have the whole series in one box like buffy has plus a new bonus disc. I am such an X-Files junky.

I have read some posts at a different board saying that Anasazi is missing from their disc 6. http://imdb.com/title/tt0106179/board/nest/35217541

If you are a big fan, the mytholgy collections have some commentaries and extras not on the original season sets. I'm an X-files freak, so I own the Collector's Editions of all 9 seasons and all the Mythology collections. I'm not a big enough freak to buy the new ones just for the packaging, but if they realease a complete box like Buffy with a few new things I will buy that.

Strangest thing: Until I looked it up for myself, I knew "Home" came in late 1999 (seventh season). I was absolutely positive I had seen it sometime in October/November of that year. Amazed by how wrong I was.

They showed it around that time again. The ads said something like "An X-File so intense it can only be shown after prime time." The first time it aired during the 4th season it aired at regular time.

Is it just me, or is there no Commentary tracks whatsoever on these new box sets!!!! I had just watched all the episodes on disc 1 of season 1, and was going to go back and play the commentaries when I couldn't find any evidence of a commentary track. Not under "Languages" or extras, or even by pressing the audio button on my DVD player remote.

I'm pretty ticked now; including commentaries is absolutely standard on TV DVD box sets. If all I wanted was a bunch of X-files episodes, I'd just watch my old VHS recordings of them.

There were no commentary tracks (at least on the first 3 seasons) on the original releases anyways. You will have to buy the mythology sets to get the commentaries. I wouldn't say commentaries are absolutely standard on TV box sets. I wish they were!

If they did it right, on these re-releases, they would have included all the extras from the original releases and the mythology sets, but instead they stripped most of the special features. Very weak, IMHO.

It was actually only the first two seasons that didn't have commentaries. They started with season 3, I know "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" has one.

I'm thinking that I'll probably hunt around and see if I can find seasons 4, 8 & 9 old style, isnce I have all the other seasons that way. Between checking here and looking around I'm sure someone will have them reduced.

That would have been nice. But I don't think their decision was weak. I see it as a nice bonus for those who shelled out a ton of money the past few years to get the original sets. If you want those features, buy the old sets. If might suck for those of us who are buying the new sets, but I'd rather pick them up for $25 per season than have some bonus features I'll only watch once at $90 a season.

Right, it's not like the full sets aren't available. It's not like you still can't find them... yet. If the full sets are that important to you, get them. If not, then pay the lower price and get the 'cheaper' set in both price and in some of your opinions, in quality as well. Makes perfect sense. You get what you paid for in the end. It's not like FOX hasn't offered the full complete sets before, and they'll probably offer them again in the future with some sort of boxed set.

Why monkey around with a 3rd version that is different than the other two versions that are already out? We have the original versions, the mythology sets, and now these new x-files "light" sets. It just doesn't make any sense why they wouldn't combine the best of both worlds and release a new set with everything? You say that they will offer them again in the future with some sort of boxed set. Why not do it now? Why have 4 releases? My god, is this the Evil Dead school of DVD releasing? If it truly a rights issue or something of that nature with the extras, I CAN understand that, but it's not like they would be driving up the prices of these new versions by including an extra disc and the 50 Megs to include 3-4 additional commentaries a season.

FWIW, I own the original releases and the mythology sets.

Ahh... I got a little ahead of myself. I am on season 3 right now, and since there were no commentaries on the first two seasons, I just assumed the third was the same. Good! Now I have something to look forward to.

IF they do put out a big box, it will be limited and go out of print soon. The Buffy set was only out for 3 months before it went out of print.

I for one would really like it if they released a slimpack set of all of the features, but I doubt that they will since only the die hards would buy it. Perhaps a mail in offer?

Ahhh, thanks for the heads up. I hadn't even unwrapped my third season yet!
