David,

You are right..I honestly didn't even think of that. I now have the second survey link on the first post.

Thanks again for your help!

Yes, if you send me the raw data in Excel spreadsheets I can send you back a very nice Access database with as much cross-correlation as you'd like! You can send the spreadsheets to my e-mail address - send me a PM and I'll respond.

Finished both. As with most surveys, I often found myself unable to simply answer "yes" or "no" to any questions as the absolutes of the scenario posed by any given question never seem to apply to me. Fun, though.

Completed both surveys. I used to be a compulsive buyer and then changed completely due to finances. Now I am heading back in the direction of a compulsive buyer but I NEED to stop especially considering that I have way too much to watch already.

Took both surveys. I'm inclined to agree with The Bus, however, regarding the differentiation between shopping for fun and compulsive shopping, which is an actual psychological disorder. You need more targeted questions to distiunguish between avid DVD buyers and those who actually can't help themselves. It would also probably be smart to throw in a few basic economic/financial questions like 'what income bracket do you fall into' and 'how much disposable income do you have that could reasonably be devoted to the purchasing of consumer products'. It's one thing if you're a millionaire earning money hand-over-fist who buys 100 DVD's a month, and a completely different matter altogether when you're a broke college student or someone working three jobs living paycheck to paycheck. Of course, compulsive shopping has nothing to do with income levels; a person suffering from this disorder will buy, buy, buy no matter how much money is at their disposal. It's like a junkie who needs a fix - the addiction is not based on the person's income. If they have plenty of money at their disposal, great. If not, they'll blow their rent money, grocery money, or do anything else it takes to score. But income is directly relevant when gauging the intensity of a normal collector who's not suffering from a clinical obsession. Clearly, the guy who spends 90% of his disposable income on DVD's is more passionate than the guy who only spends 10%, even if the 10% and 90% are wildly different numbers.

1. Do you consider yourself to be a compulsive DVD shopper or have the ability to make many impulsive purchasing decisions?

No, I don't think so. Usually I don't even buy a disc I see on the shelf the first time I see it-unless, of course, it's a brand-new release that I went specifically to pick up.

2. What are the major reasons behind each purchase you make? How do you feel after you purchase a DVD?

It just comes down to whether I like it and feel that it's worth it. Sometimes I buy something that's had a price drop or is on sale that I didn't get when it was more expensive.

3. Do you purchase DVDs and keep them in the shrinkwrap for collectible reasons or just because you didn't get to watch it yet? If yes to either one, what types of feelings or emotions do you get when you make purchases of such DVDs?

No, not at all. I would say that I "collect" them, but only to watch them (although sometimes it takes a while for me to actually get around to that). I always open them as soon as I get home with them, as I consider this part of the "experience" of buying them. To me, buying it and letting it sit unopened would be like going out to get a hooker, paying her, and then saying, "honey, I'm not in the mood right now. We'll do it some other time." Also, opening them lets me check for defects or the wrong disc in the box (this has happened to some people) and get rid of those security stickers and Sensormatic tabs.

4. Do you consider yourself a completist for your collection? If so, what kinds of steps do you take to make this collection complete?

No, if I don't like a sequel I won't buy it. I also usually don't get boxed sets if I can get the movies individually.

5. Are you very particular about your collecting habits? Will you go out of your way to not purchase from a particular store or not purchase a movie from a particular studio?

No.

6. Do you price shop or price match?

Yes, all the time. Checking the ads on Saturday is a weekly ritual.

7. Do you rent at all? Do you have any renting/buying ratio that you could estimate?

Not anymore, with DVDs so cheap now. I do borrow sometimes though.

8. Is word of mouth important when you make purchasing decisions or do you go by your own instincts?

If the Internet counts, I would say yes. People I know generally don't share my tastes in film though.

9. Approximately how much do you spend on DVDs a week/month/year?

I don't know. I will say that I don't think the amount I spend has gone up over the years, even though I've been buying more DVDs.

10. How do you store/display your DVDs? If possible, could you include a picture of your collection?

I keep them in a group of tower shelves. I buy new ones as the collection grows. One thing I like about the approach is that they're easy to move if I want. Each tower holds about 65-75 DVDs, so I can lift one of them without removing the discs.

11. Do you make an event out of going out to purchase or watch your DVDs?

Occasionally I go out at midnight to get a new release. Does that count?

12. (this might be a weird question for some people) Do you love your DVDs, take care of them, take them out to look at or clean them?

I guess I take care of them, but I don't really take them out to look at.
