One shelving unit has them organized by studio, then another shelving unit houses only tv sets, and another shelving unit holds box sets/series collections.
I'm 40 away from hitting 1,000 -Alphabetical would drive me nuts!

I thought it was more like a drama, Barnes and Noble (where I work) has it horribly overprice, and in the comedy section. I liked Fargo, but I didn't find it very funny. I'd put it under drama, but everywhere I look it's in comedy. So that's pretty much why genre wouldn't work for me, otherwise I'd totally do it that way.

I keep all the studios together and then alphabetically...looks really nice on the shelves that way. I also have a seperate cabinet for box sets and other special editions (like tins etc.)

I arrange mine by height. It is a good system because it makes it easy to figure out where the new ones go.
Actually I have four shelves that each have their own organization. I have my Criterions and large sets (Scarface Cigar Box, Matrix Limited Collectors set etc) and sets or discs I'm particularly fond of (King Kong & Alfred Hitchcock Collection) on a seperate shelf.
Then my main shelf is arranged by director (and chronolgical within each group) and and the remaining room filled with my Docs and Music DVDs.
I have another small shelf with about 30 of my favourites in no particular order.
And last is anything that doesn't fit into one of these groups is in alpha on a seperate shelf by the TV.

I have a few major categories, and the DVDs are alphabetically organized with in them. They are: Foreign Language, Animation (mostly Disney/Pixar), "Classics" (pre-1980s), Televsion and Documentaries (including sports), and finally "Mainstream" which means everything else. Within some categories I have movies grouped by director, e.g. all Hitchcock films under "H" within Classics, or all Francois Ozon films under "O" for Foreign Language.

in the two shelving units I have, everything is alphabetized. everything else that I don't have room for is randomized.

Mostly alphabetical by director (release year within director).
Tv-shows, Digipacks, snappers and amarays are all separated.
Asian films by country and in alphabetical order within country (some by director or star).
All amaray cases have a custom spine with the director name and release year.
That's the simplified version of it, but I guess it's enough to have me committed.

Here's something I've wondered about, thought I'd get other peoples opinions:
When putting series together and there's a prequel, does the prequel go in the series chronology or the release date chronology? Quick example, Star Wars movies go Ep I-VI or IV-VI,I-III?

Alphabetical....however, I moved a few of my TV DVD sets and my Superbits to another shelf. I ran out of room on my main DVD rack. I may move my boxsets eventually from my main shelf also, but room is a factor now.

I used to have my movies alphabetical, with TV shows on a seperate shelf alpabetical, with box sets on a seperate shelf alphabetized and Music DVDs seperate as well.... I recently just amalgamated the whole collection onto one big wall, so now everything, regardless of type (except music dvds are still seperate...dvd-audio and the like look bad with normal dvd cases).
Alphabetical seems the best way... I once (when my collection was only at 150 instead of the now 1300) tried organizing by studio/actors/directors but it was too hard to easily locate titles (especially for any guests or family members) so I scrapped that.

I seperate my collection by TV Shows, Movies, and Horror movies (since I am on the only one in my family that likes horror movies). They are all on the same wall, but just in differen't bookcases.
