Mine are alphabetical from start to finish including TV shows. The only deviance from that is movies and sequals are lumped together even if the sequals are out of alphabetical order, for example, Jurassic Park is under J, but Lost World is right next to Jurassic Park.

I've got mine split into several different sections: Criterion, TV, Animated, Anime, Music, Movies/Documentaries. I've got the Criterions by spine #, and then everything else is in alpha order, with a couple exceptions for "series" movies.

I only have like 370 something DVDs, but I have them arranged alphabetically on my big shelf, and then I have a little tower thing with some of my favorite picks. About 60 of them. They're alphabetical as well.
Sometimes it's hard for me, like with the Jurassic Park/Lost World call. But I put them next to each other. Where as Smoke/Blue In The Face I have separated alphabetically. But if I had all the Bond films or something, I would totally lump them together.

On my DVD shelves I have all of my movies alphabetical, then all my TV shows alphabetical by show name and then ordered by chronology, volume number, or title depending on how they have been released. My music DVDs are with my CDs organized by Artist and then chronologically within artists (same way I order my CDs)
When it comes to sequels that don't have the series name in them (ie Army of Darkness) it goes where it should alphabetically, but if it has the series name, even if it's after another title, it goes with them (ie Citizen Toxie: Toxic Avenger 4 goes with Toxic Avenger 1-3), or, of course, if it's already in a box set (ie Chuky collection has Bride of Chucky, so it stays in the set which is after Child's Play 1, but otherwise it would go under B)

I order mine by UPC code. Descending.
... but I'm thinking of changing it to alphabetical by genre with the only exception being sequels go after the first one regardless of alphabet. And TV box sets have their own alphabetical section. The other stuff that won't fit on a shelf goes in a special place (like the Phantasm Sphere Box Set).

I wonder if anyone organizes their movies based on something like their rating at IMDB. Come on, I know someone here does something like that. Fess up.
And if you do that, and most of your movies suck, does that mean your first few rows would be empty?

My problem by organizing movies by catagory is that some movies are borderline, and I can't decide. Is Ghost and the Darkness horror/thriller/action/drama? Is Pulp Fiction Action or Comedy? Probably action but I mostly like the movie because I find it humorous. Punch Drunk Love... comedy or drama? I thought it was more like a drama, Barnes and Noble (where I work) has it horribly overprice, and in the comedy section. I liked Fargo, but I didn't find it very funny. I'd put it under drama, but everywhere I look it's in comedy. So that's pretty much why genre wouldn't work for me, otherwise I'd totally do it that way.

Mostly alphabetical with the following exceptions. Fox Studio Classics and Film Noir are grouped together by spine number. I also keep most of my box sets seperated from the main part of my dvds.

Right now they are arranged alphabetically. I do keep my music/concert DVD's separate though, arranged alphabetically by the artist concerned.
I have my music CD's arranged alphabetically by artist/band, and then chronologically within the artist. I'm thinking about doing something similar with my DVD's. I think in the next couple of weeks I'm going to arrange them by director, and then chronologically within in the director. That way I can see the work of a director as a whole and see the evolution of his work.
The only problem is the music DVD's. What about something like The Last Waltz? Would I keep that separate with the music DVD's categorized under The Band, or would I put it in with the rest of the Martin Scorsese films. Same thing goes for his new Dylan documentary.

Almost forgot another "category" I have: Chick Flicks. That's for the likes of Bridget Jones, Somewhere in Time, Cutting Edge and even Titanic.
I've also got a small "family movie" section. It's where I put things like Willy Wonka. Also Indian in the Cupboard, which is next to another Indian movie, Windwalker.
As for music movies, all I've got are Footloose and Purple Rain.

My wife made me arrange my stuff in alphabetical order. I used to just "add on" to then end, but now I've gotta flex when I get new titles. And she STILL can't find anything!!!!! I also have taken out all of my box sets and put them on a separate shelf, along with the TV stuff which now has its own 79" by 32" case!!

Alphanumeric:
First - movies and documentaries (I count TV one offs such as the BBC's Pride and Prejudice and the original Das Boot in this category).
Next - TV series
Penultimate - music DVDs (all two of them)
Last - other (such as my yoga DVD).
If I had a bigger collection I might try either sorting by category or doing something like wendersfan.

Mine are all arranged by DVD Profiler number (aside from the huge pile on the floor waiting to be entered). It doesn't look pretty, but it makes it simple to find any disc.

I organize my stuff first by TV, Children Movies, and Movies.
1) TV is alphabetical then chronological within a series.
2) Children movies are in chronological groups of Disney Treasures, 44 major Disney animated movies, other Disney animation, PIXAR, Miyazaki, DreamWorks, and then others(the others part is alphabetical).
3) Movies are in chronological groups by sets (bond etc), favorite directors, and then remaining Criterions. Other movies are arranged alphabetically within their genre.
