Doctor Who - Studio Announces R1 Releases for The Time Warrior & for Planet of Evil

It's No April Fools' Joke; Both Arrive on April 1st!

As we reported a week and a half ago, Warner Home Video and the BBC are planning a DVD release in North America for Doctor Who - Story #070: The Time Warrior. This is based on a trailer included on recent releases of Time-Flight and Arc of Infinity.

This morning the studios confirmed this by formally announcing the April 1st release of Time Warrior, starring Jon Pertwee's as the 3rd Doctor, and introducing Elisabeth Sladen as new companion Sarah Jane Smith. Additionally, they will also be releasing Doctor Who - Story #081: Planet of Evil, starring Tom Baker as the 4th Doctor and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane. Planet of Evil is described by Warner's announcement thusly: "When a distress call draws the Doctor and Sarah Jane to a scientific outpost at the end of the Universe, the Doctor suspects dark planetary forces are behind a series of sinister deaths."

These two releases will come directly on the heels of the March 4th release of The Complete Davros Collection. That package compiles a number of Dalek-related stories into one set, including of Doctor Who - Story #104: Destiny of the Daleks and Doctor Who - Story #152: Remembrance of the Daleks: Special Edition. Both of those will also be available separately on the same date as the Davros box set.

Each of the April releases are planned to sell separately for $24.98 SRP. In our previous report we described the bonus material expected on The Time Warrior. The extras on Planet of Evil are going to include a Commentary Track by actors Tom Baker, Elisabeth Sladen and Prentis Hancock, and producer Philip Hinchcliffe. Featurettes consist of "A Darker Side" (the making of this serial) and "Planetary Performance" (a look at the production from the actors' point of view). "Studio Scene" will have the only surviving behind-the-scenes footage from the story. And there will be the usual Photo Gallery, Production Notes, CD-ROM material, continuity announcements and repeat trailer. Plus a "coming soon" trailer for a future Doctor Who DVD release.

Package art is not available yet for these two April 1st releases, but stay tuned and we'll update you as soon as possible.

Classic Releases Juggled: Planet of Evil Moved In The Process

This morning we've confirmed with the BBC Home Video that there will be major changes to the previously announced DVD schedule for classic Doctor Who titles in North America. The announced schedules for March 4th and April 1st will see these switch-arounds:

Doctor Who - The Complete Davros Collection was scheduled for March 4th, but is now off the schedule.
Doctor Who - Story #152: Remembrance of the Daleks: Special Edition was scheduled for March 4th, but is now also off the schedule.
Doctor Who - Story #104: Destiny of the Daleks remains ON the schedule for March 4th.
Doctor Who - Story #081: Planet of Evil was scheduled for April 1st, but is moved to March 4th.
Doctor Who - Story #142: Timelash will now be added to the schedule for April 1st .
Doctor Who - Story #070: The Time Warrior remains on the schedule for April 1st .

This means that the March and April schedules are as follows:

March 4th : Destiny of the Daleks and Planet of Evil (both Tom Baker stories)
April 1st : The Time Warrior and Timelash (Jon Pertwee and Colin Baker)

At this time the BBC has no word yet on when The Complete Davros Collection and Remembrance of the Daleks: Special Edition will return to the schedule. We'll update you on that as soon as we know more.

About the new title: Doctor Who - Story #142: Timelash is a 2-part story featuring Colin Baker as the 6th Doctor. He and companion Peri travel to the future, to a planet called Karfel, "an oppressed world ruled by a cruel tyrant, Borad. When the Doctor arrives on Karfel, Borad forces him to search for a young woman, Vena, who has disappeared into the Timelash - a space-time tunnel leading to the past of an alien world. The Doctor’s search takes him to 19th century Earth! Accidentally bringing back Herbert, a young man holidaying in Scotland, as well as Vena, the Doctor returns to Karfel to face the mysterious Borad." Don't miss this classic adventure where the Time Lord meets H.G. Wells, in a story written as a tribute to the famous author's works. It will also include these extras:

Commentary with actors Colin Baker, Nicola Bryant and Paul Darrow.

On a final note, it's worth mentioning here to Doctor Who fans that the 10th actor to play the Time Lord, David Tennant, will be making a guest appearance in the upcoming holiday special Extras - The Extra Special Series Finale. He's rumored to be in costume as The Doctor here, and it airs on HBO Dec. 16th (and on the BBC in the U.K. on Dec. 25th), and then will be on DVD in North America this coming January 15th. It might be worth looking out for.

Doctor Who - Story #152: Remembrance of the Daleks: Special Edition is coming out with the support of the Doctor Who Restoration Team, who saw the previous release as, quote, "a bit of an albatross around the Restoration Team's collective neck, owing to an error we made during the remastering of the story which meant that a small number of video effects were missing from the first two episodes." That *mainly* pertains to the Region 2 release, but Region 1 is affected because for this Special Edition they went back and remastered the episode from scratch! Also, the extras package on the previous release was quite a bit lighter than on other Doctor Who DVDs. So now they are releasing a new Special Edition that includes all the old extras (commentary tracks, production notes, CD-ROM, etc.), plus two new featurettes called "Remembrances" and "Back to School". There are enhance- ments to the Extended and Deleted Scenes, to the Multi-Angle Sequences, and to the Photo Gallery as well. Plus there is a brand new 5.1 Audio Mix on this re-release, including an Isolated Music track. Unfortunately the music from The Beatles that was on the original broadcast will not be present on this disc in the Region 1 area; it could not be licensed for areas outside of Region 2. Cost is $24.98 SRP.

The commentary features actors Peter Davison, Janet Fielding, Sarah Sutton and Colin Baker.

Information posted on the British Board of Film Classification official website has reveled the identity of two new UK DVD releases. The first is the 1982 Peter Davison two part story, Black Orchid. The extras for this release have been cleared and include a number of deleted scenes as well as clips from Blue Peter and Points of View. There is also a documentary looking at the locations of Black Orchid.

One other extra listed is a trail for another release, the 1978 Tom Baker story, The Invasion of Time. This story, set on Gallifrey featured the return of The Sontarans and the departure of Louise Jameson from the series.

In addition a posting on Colin Baker's website mentions that he was recently due to record a commentary for the complete Trial of a TimeLord season, for future DVD release.

Doctor Who - Official BBC Details & Box for North American DVDs of Timelash

Classic Colin Baker Story Confirmed for Release on April 1st

It's been about a month-and-a-half since we first reported on the re-shuffle of BBC Video's March/April schedule of classic Doctor Who releases in North America. At the time we were told by the studio to expect the already-announced title Planet of Evil to move from April 1st to March 4th, covering the hole left when the Davros release (and a related special edition of Remembrance of the Daleks) was pulled due to clearance issues. Since this move would pair Planet of Evil with the previously announced March release of Destiny of the Daleks, the BBC said they'd shortly announce that the other scheduled April title, The Time Warrior, would instead be joined by the Colin Baker story Timelash.

While we're still waiting on word from distributor Warner Bros., we have now gotten from the folks at BBC Video the official details and package art for the Region 1 release of Doctor Who - Story #142: Timelash, starring Colin Baker as the Sixth Doctor. They've confirmed the release date of April 1st, and the cost of $24.98 SRP (however, you can pre-order it right now from Amazon for just $16.99).

This single-disc release contains two episodes running a total of 90 minutes, and is meant to appeal to fans of (and be a tribute to) the works of famous classic science fiction book author H.G. Wells (The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds). Paul Darrow of Blake's 7 guest stars in this two-part story, and keep a sharp eye out for a mural of the face of the Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee). The TARDIS gets caught in the Timelash, a powerful time corridor that brings the Doctor and Peri to the troubled planet of Karfel. Time Meddler and Five Doctors DVD Updates

The Restoration Team has updated its website with details about the forthcoming DVD releases of The Time Meddler and The Five Doctors - 25th Anniversary Edition in the UK.

In it, Steve Roberts reveals why VidFIRE hasn't been employed on The Time Meddler. The process is normally used to give a video look to film recordings so that episodes appear as they did on transmission.

As previously reported by Outpost Gallifrey, extras on that disc will include a feature examining the comic strip adventures of the First Doctor, as well as a piece using audio recordings and the script to place in context the 12 seconds that are still missing from Checkmate - the final episode of the 1965 story - after they were cut by overseas censors before the print turned up.

The two-disc Five Doctors release will include the original version of the story, lasting 90 minutes, plus the special edition, which runs for 102 minutes. Screen grabs are used in the Restoration Team's feature to illustrate the improvement in picture quality of this 1983 story.

Among the extras on the Five Doctors release are outtakes plus contemporaneous appearances by assorted cast members on the BBC TV shows Saturday Superstore, Blue Peter, Breakfast Time and Nationwide.

The Time Meddler is due out on February 4, while The Five Doctors - 25th Anniversary Edition is released on March 3.

In an early "heads-up" to retailers, distributor Warner Home Video has revealed BBC Video's plans for the USA release of 3 new classic Doctor Who DVD releases (all digitally restored/remastered), along with a box set of these stories collected into a package called Doctor Who - Beneath The Surface. These stories feature the Time Lord's three classic battles against the Silurians, then the Sea Devils, and finally both races together! Here are all the known details:

Doctor Who - Story #052: Doctor Who And The Silurians - Also known as simply "The Silurians", this story stars Jon Pertwee as the 3rd Doctor. "The Doctor is summoned to an underground research center, and soon discovers that the nearby cave system conceals a colony of an ancient race called the Silurians." This 7-part production was first broadcast in 1970 and is available in color for the first time (it "was the first Doctor Who story to be made on colour videotape", per the Restoration Team) The 175 running time requires 2 discs, that includes extras such as Commentary (with director Timothy Combe, producer Barry Letts, script editor Terrance Dicks, actors Caroline John, Peter Miles, Geoffrey Palmer and Nicholas Courtney), Isolated Music, Photo Gallery, Production Notes, a "Coming Soon" Trailer, DVD-ROM Material, and 5 Featurettes: "What Lies Beneath," "Going Underground," "Now and Then," "Musical Scales," and a look at the color restoration process in "Colour Silurian Overlay" (note: it probably will be spelled "color" on the North American release; "colour" is the popular spelling in the U.K.). Keep an eye out for Geoffrey Palmer ("Lionel", As Time Goes By) in some episodes; he returned to Doctor Who recently with the 10th Doctor in the Christmas episode "Voyage of the Damned". Cost of The Silurians by itself is expected to be $34.98 SRP, based on previous 2-Disc releases.

Doctor Who - Story #062: The Sea Devils - This time the 3rd Doctor (Jon Pertwee) goes up against an old enemy, who leads an army made up of a race related to the Silurians. "When the Doctor and Jo Grant (Katy Manning) pay a visit to the Master (Roger Delgado) at a top security prison, the Doctor soon finds himself pitted against the Sea Devils, an ancient race of reptiles intent on eliminating humankind." This 1972 production comes in 6 parts, which is presented on a single DVD running 147 minutes. Expect extras to include Commentary (with director Michael Briant, producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks, moderated by late-eighties script editor Andrew Cartmel), a behind-the-scenes Featurette called "Hello Sailor!," Isolated Music, a Photo Gallery, Production Notes, an 8mm Film home movie shot by a Royal Navy sailor who was an extra in the production, Trailers and Continuity Pieces, DVD-ROM Material and a "Coming Soon" trailer. Cost is expected to be $24.98 SRP, based on previous single-disc releases.

Doctor Who - Story #131: Warriors of the Deep - The 5th Doctor (Peter Davison) faces both races in this 4-part story from 1984. "On Sea Base Four, the Doctor, Tegan (Janet Fielding) and Turlough (Mark Strickson) find themselves accused of being enemy agents. However, there is a greater threat to humankind: the Silurians and Sea Devils have formed an alliance." This single-disc release runs 97 minutes and includes supplements such as a Commentary (with actors Peter Davison and Janet Fielding, script editor Eric Saward and visual effects designer Mat Irvine), Featurettes "They Came from Beneath the Sea" and "The Depths", a BBC Schools production called "Science in Action" (featuring Doctor Who visual effects designer Mat Irvine), Isolated Music, a Photo Gallery, Production Notes, DVD-ROM Material, Trailers and Continuity Pieces and a "Coming Soon" trailer for more classic Doctor Who DVDs. Cost is again expected to be $24.98 SRP.

Retailers have been told that this collection will cost only $59.98 SRP...which is much less to pay (probably as much as twenty dollars cheaper) than getting these releases separately!
