There will probably be a box set of Eps 1,2 & 3, as well as a bigger box set of all 6. The rumors I've heard were '06 for the 3 movie set (most likely with a disc of extras) and '07 or '08 for all six. (timed to arrive as a promotion for the 3D versions in the theaters) I doubt there will be anything like LOTR for a sleeve to wrap the others in if you were to buy them seperately. I say this because it doesn't seem like a Fox thing to do, but they may change their minds.
And of course, don't forget that George will probably want to change 4, 5, & 6 again to better match the graphics from the first three, and that would lead to a new box set also. And then...
Count on 3-6 more box sets before George is dead.

I'm in the exact same situation (I own Ep II on DVD, but never did get anything but the VHS of Ep I and want to wait for the 3 box set rather than go ahead and get Ep III right now) and I wish I knew the answer too.

1) buy Ep III (I have Ep II on DVD and EP I on VHS) & Ep I, skip the boxed set
2) buy Ep III, hold off on Ep I, then buy the boxed set, and sell Ep II & Ep III on eBay (Ep I on VHS is pretty much worthless).
3) don't buy Ep III, and wait for the boxed set, then sell Ep II on eBay.
I guess I'm leaning towards option #2, but if I heard a boxed set was coming up soon, I might go for #3. The thing that worries me (to the extent any of this rises to the level of "worry"), is that I'll buy a boxed set, and then they'll release a "deluxe" boxed set with an extra disc.
I refuse to be suckered into buying a deluxe 6 movie set, after springing for the original trilogy boxed set last year, no matter what!! (ok, well..perhaps if I can get a decent price for it on eBay! ;^P
Boy, can you think of a geekier thing to debate?? lol

As others have said, I am sure there will be a box set. Just the question is when. I was hoping that atleast Episode I-III came out together so I can get them all. But so far nobody has said anything. All I can find is all of them sold separately.

I had seen the OT in the theaters of course, but grew up with p&s VHS copies. When I got a widescreen set, it was almost like they were brand new movies.

Sure they could have pressured him, but he has enough clout that he could have told them to go pound sand. Remember, the p&s TPM DVD didn't come out until Ep 2 was released. And going back even further, we didn't get the TPM DVD until a good two years after the VHS and (Japanese only) laserdisc.
I think he bowed to the almighty dollar basically.
(slightly offtopic here, has anyone else ever seen the old discussions in the newsgroups and such about how there was a good chance of getting the OT on DVD way back in 1997? I've only seen a few references here and there, but something about their tone made me think they were for real. I think something happened internally at Fox to make the deal fall through, the whole subject is pretty murky. I've just wondered for awhile if I'm the only one that ever heard that.)

i think lucas was just seeing if the format would take off. he released the OT on VCD in the states to lackluster sales, and I think he didn't want to do that again. I think the reason the OT SE showed up last year was the looming thought of missing a format due to HDDVD or blueray. Episode 3 will show up xmas 2005....the same time it was initially thought the new formats would launch...now we know this won't be happening...so he could have held out for his big box but you know what they say about a bird in the hand.

I don't know--I just think that there are dozens of better reasons to be irked with Lucas about than this.

No Tapes

Finally this morning (our last news item), there's confirmation from 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm that the release of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, certain to be one of the biggest sellers of the year, will be DVD only. There will be no VHS version released. You can read more at Video Business. It's just one more sign that VHS is soon to be an ex-format.
Nail in the coffin.
