There will probably be a box set of Eps 1,2 & 3, as well as a bigger box set of all 6. The rumors I've heard were '06 for the 3 movie set (most likely with a disc of extras) and '07 or '08 for all six. (timed to arrive as a promotion for the 3D versions in the theaters) I doubt there will be anything like LOTR for a sleeve to wrap the others in if you were to buy them seperately. I say this because it doesn't seem like a Fox thing to do, but they may change their minds.

And of course, don't forget that George will probably want to change 4, 5, & 6 again to better match the graphics from the first three, and that would lead to a new box set also. And then...

Count on 3-6 more box sets before George is dead.

C'mon! You're not giving George enough credit. I'd say 8-10 more box sets before he croaks... And then after he dies, they'll release a special set to commemmorate him...

I'm in the exact same situation (I own Ep II on DVD, but never did get anything but the VHS of Ep I and want to wait for the 3 box set rather than go ahead and get Ep III right now) and I wish I knew the answer too.

Well..yeah..I'm sure there will be a box of the 3 of them, too - but I'm trying to decide between:

1) buy Ep III (I have Ep II on DVD and EP I on VHS) & Ep I, skip the boxed set

2) buy Ep III, hold off on Ep I, then buy the boxed set, and sell Ep II & Ep III on eBay (Ep I on VHS is pretty much worthless).

3) don't buy Ep III, and wait for the boxed set, then sell Ep II on eBay.

I guess I'm leaning towards option #2, but if I heard a boxed set was coming up soon, I might go for #3. The thing that worries me (to the extent any of this rises to the level of "worry"), is that I'll buy a boxed set, and then they'll release a "deluxe" boxed set with an extra disc.

I refuse to be suckered into buying a deluxe 6 movie set, after springing for the original trilogy boxed set last year, no matter what!! (ok, well..perhaps if I can get a decent price for it on eBay! ;^P

Boy, can you think of a geekier thing to debate?? lol

There will be a box set thats for sure. Also Episode I's puppet Yoda will be replaced By CGI. I say go for either choice 2 or 3.

As others have said, I am sure there will be a box set. Just the question is when. I was hoping that atleast Episode I-III came out together so I can get them all. But so far nobody has said anything. All I can find is all of them sold separately.

yeah..but I have this really nagging feeling they're going to release I-III as a boxed set close to when they release III, and then not that much longer, release a deluxe I-III with a bonus disc. Sort of like the LOTR release strategy. That would suck if I didn't know about the deluxe I-III and shelled out for the regular one.

I seem to recall that Fox did package Episodes I & II in a cardboard sleeve and sell them together. I'm sure I've seen that at Best Buy.

I was actually referring to the prospect of them selling JUST the sleeve. That's what they did for the LOTR DVDs - at least for the Extended Editions. You could buy a case for $3 which you could place the 3 movies in, which was identical (I think) to the case for the 3-movie-boxed set. They also kinda did something like that when Kill Bill 2 came out - when you bought Vol. 2, they were giving away caeses which would fit both of them.

Yeah, I heard that he is replacing Jar Jar with another annoying CGI character AND also replacing Jake Lloyd with a CGI Anakin that can act.

Can't give LFL crap about this. There has been ~one~ DVD for TPM, ~one~ DVD for AotC, and ~one~ boxset for the OT. Not a single double dip on DVD.

Yeah, but we CAN fault him for putting out Foolscreen versions of them.

Seriously? I'd fault him. SE changes notwithstanding, his thing about preserving films seems pretty hollow when he releases pan and scan versions of the SW films.

I had seen the OT in the theaters of course, but grew up with p&s VHS copies. When I got a widescreen set, it was almost like they were brand new movies.

Since many people seem to be a little confused, I'll try my best to help:

If you like it, buy it. If you don't, then don't.

I would tend to think that the P&S releases are more of a Fox thing than a Lucas thing.

Oh, I'm sure Fox pressured him, but I'm sure they were also pressuring him to get the OT on DVD as soon as the first DVD players were on the shelves, and we see how that went.

Sure they could have pressured him, but he has enough clout that he could have told them to go pound sand. Remember, the p&s TPM DVD didn't come out until Ep 2 was released. And going back even further, we didn't get the TPM DVD until a good two years after the VHS and (Japanese only) laserdisc.

I think he bowed to the almighty dollar basically.

(slightly offtopic here, has anyone else ever seen the old discussions in the newsgroups and such about how there was a good chance of getting the OT on DVD way back in 1997? I've only seen a few references here and there, but something about their tone made me think they were for real. I think something happened internally at Fox to make the deal fall through, the whole subject is pretty murky. I've just wondered for awhile if I'm the only one that ever heard that.)

i think lucas was just seeing if the format would take off. he released the OT on VCD in the states to lackluster sales, and I think he didn't want to do that again. I think the reason the OT SE showed up last year was the looming thought of missing a format due to HDDVD or blueray. Episode 3 will show up xmas 2005....the same time it was initially thought the new formats would launch...now we know this won't be happening...so he could have held out for his big box but you know what they say about a bird in the hand.

Oh, I agree. I'm sure that Fox "suggested" a P&S release, and he okayed it. Does that go against his stance on film preservation? I don't think so. He's always been a big supporter of widescreen releases, and as long as widescreen versions are available, that's the important thing.

I don't know--I just think that there are dozens of better reasons to be irked with Lucas about than this.

Pretty sure the OT VCDs were never released domestically. . .

I think a bigger reason was that Episode III was right around the corner.

No Tapes

from the bits

Finally this morning (our last news item), there's confirmation from 20th Century Fox and Lucasfilm that the release of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, certain to be one of the biggest sellers of the year, will be DVD only. There will be no VHS version released. You can read more at Video Business. It's just one more sign that VHS is soon to be an ex-format.

Nail in the coffin.
