TVShowsOnDVD has the first shot of the R1 cover-art.
It's small...the smallest ever, but looks like it's a port of the R2 UK version without the UK rating thingy.

Universal Studios has officially announced Battlestar Galactica: Season One for release on September 20th.
The five-disc set will include the already-available pilot mini-series and subsequent thirteen episodes in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. Bonus materials will include commentary tracks on the mini-series and nine episodes (33, Bastille Day, Act of Contrition, You Can't Go Home Again, Tigh Me Up Tigh Me Down, The Hand of God, Colonial Day and Kobol's Last Gleaming Parts 1 & 2), deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes footage, "Battlestar Galactica: The Lowdown" featurette, sketches and artwork.
The set will also include one of three collectible DVD exclusive trading cards. Retail is $59.98.

We've reported about the Battlestar Galactica (2004) DVD situation, and how next Tuesday there will be a Best Buy exclusive release of the "U.K. version" of the show (mainly featuring a different sequence for the opening credits). Best Buy's 4-disc exclusive set (currently selling at $48.95) runs through September, and then Universal will bring the show out on DVD for other retailers.
Universal has announced their "all retailers" release this morning, and as you can see on the left, the cover is noticably different than the box which Best Buy has been depicting. The release is set for September 20th, and the SRP is $59.98 (which means you'll be able to purchase it anywhere from $40 to $55, after retail discounts are applied). The running time is 757 minutes for a 5-DVD package (one more than the Best Buy set), including the 2003 mini-series on the first disc, and there are many extras. Here's a list of them, copied from Universal's release information:
Commentary Tracks:
Feature Commentary on "The Mini-Series" with Director Michael Rymer and Executive Producers David Eick and Ron Moore
"Pilot" Commentary with Director Michael Rymer and Executive Producers David Eick and Ronald D. Moore
"Bastille Day" Episode Commentary with Executive Producers David Eick and Ronald D. Moore
"Act of Contrition" Episode Commentary with Executive Producers David Eick and Ronald D. Moore
"You Can't Go Home Again" Episode Commentary with Executive Producers David Eick and Ronald D. Moore
"Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down" Episode Commentary with Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore
"The Hand of God" Episode Commentary with Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore
"Colonial Day" Episode Commentary with Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore
"Kobol's Last Gleaming: Part 1" Episode Commentary with Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore
"Kobol's Last Gleaming: Part 2" Episode Commentary with Executive Producer Ronald D. Moore

An added bonus item listed is "1 of 3 Collectible DVD Exclusive Trading Cards"; we're not sure yet what these are trading cards of, or how someone would obtain the other thwo cards in the set. We'll look into it, and let you know what we find out. Video is shown as " Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1)", and sound is shown to be "English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround". English and Spanish subtitles are on board as well.

I don't think ANYBODY should bother getting this at bestbuy, it'll show Universal that these "exclusive" releases are completely useless (especially since it's a completely different release..if they were smart, they would use the better of the two for their exclusive time period but why would they do something smart?) ...I hope people who aren't as well informed as dvdtalkers don't go and buy the bestbuy exclusive one, then find out there's a new, better release 2 months later and pick up that one too because they're a big fan..

Also quite frankly at that price I think I'll wait for the next DDD sale, when is that BTW

Great news and with the extra disc (not included with the best buy set) it is definitely worth the wait. I can't decide which cover I like best but this one is not bad. Wish there was a larger picture but I am sure that will come soon.
Here is a nice link to universal website with more info. LINKY

If anything I think the dual release w/ different content is going to garner more resentment against Universal than BB.
Thanks a lot.

Thanks a lot.

I've been waffling on the mini-series for some time. Very glad I held off.

This is great news, I had been wondering if Universal was even going to say anything before the 26th came around. I think it's really stupid that the sets are different as it will only confuse people. Plus I wonder what BestBuy will do with the extra sets come september.... They will have an exclusive boxset that no one will want.
So this new release will have the miniseries on one disc but the current release spreads it out on to two discs. If they could have fit it on one, why didn't they do that from the beginning?

Yeah, this exclusive store stuff is for the birds. You know what would set this practice straight? Is if no other retailer carried the set if it was an exclusive at bestbuy first(like that would happen). Universal would kill this practice quick though. This is also happening with Space Above and Beyond which is another title I'm really looking forward to.
About the set itself, I'm really excited about it. I love a set with a wealth of comms on it and this one doesn't look like it will let me down a bit. The only bad thing I can see is that no actors are on the comms. However, producers and directors usually give more valuable information anyways on the comm so it's not all bad (they just usually aren't as fun).

But in any case, looks like waiting for the offfical R1 release will be the only way to go.

Well, I was sure the mini would not be included, so I was wrong about that. Let's see if there's a "proof of purchase" rebate for people who already bought the mini, which was not exactly bargain priced itself. I think $10 would be appropriate, $5 more likely, and $0 most likely of all.
Not happy *at all* about the way these releases have been handled.

So it's confirmed that there is no commentary on the Best Buy exclusive set?
If so, that's very disappointing and there will be no purchase from me (even though I had planned on getting it).
The "all-retailers" version does sound good but I'm still pissed that I basically have to rebuy the mini.

Still don't know why they'd include the mini-series but they did, so I was wrong as well. Nice package for the season one. I still think these retailer exclusives suck and I'd think Universal would want their best package out in as many hands as possible a couple of weeks ago in advance of season 2 but what do I know?
