I just got them both last week without ever seeing them... both were very good and I enjoyed them. American History X was really good. Wish I would have seen it long ago and not waited so long.

hey now...I'm a big ATHF fan, but Sealab makes me laugh just as much, if not more, and is just as non-sensical

Buying blind is somewhat of a habit, so the choices are many. Couple more honorable mentions would be:
Amelie
Audition
Female Prisoner #701: Scorpion
Nang Nak
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Three Outlaw Samurai
Hidden Fortress
Visitor Q
Gattaca
OK .. so I couldn't just list one ....

Looks like I'm not alone here when I say that most of my buys are blind buys as I too don't go to the theater any more. (Last movie I saw at the theater was LOTR:TTT.) I also don't watch many TV shows. (I only watch Stargate religiously, and that's only been within the last two seasons).
One of the latest TV shows I've bought that has really been a great surprise is Beastmaster. Great show using the bronze age atmosphere that the movies used. All three seasons have their own season long story arcs.
I'm also finding Farscape to be pretty good through the Starburst Editions.
As far as movies...Hmmm. Believe it or not, I found Troy to be fairly good. Why? Because I also have the mini-series, Helen of Troy which sort of fills in the ommissions that the big budget movie leaves out. The movie was more of a war film, while the mini-series was more of a love story.
Another film I thought was better than average was the 2004 Spartacus mini-series. If you have played the PC game, Rome: Total War, then that mini-series is really interesting for its realistic portrayal of Roman politics, battle tactics, and tribal civilizations like the Gauls and the Thracians.
I see some people here have mentioned 24: Season 1. I recently bought this on Amazon's Season 1 sale. Haven't watched it yet, but I'm betting that I'll enjoy it.

Casablanca is the best blind buy I ever made.
A close runner-up: Legend of 1900
My best AND cheapest blind buy was Firefly. Found it in the parking garage at the mall... so all I had to do was pick it up. It had been run over several times and the packaging was destroyed, but miraculously the discs are in excellent condition!

My absolute best blind buy would be a tie between Alias and Cowboy Bebop
Honorable mentions:
The Last Samurai
Kill Bill Vol. 1 (went to see Vol. 2 in theater after watching Vol. 1 DVD)
The Transporter
