If it's anything like the Back to the Future problem, it'd be faster to buy now and send away for the replacement.
None of the Best Buys near me have the movie in stock. I don't think this is quite the same situation as Back to the Future, which was expected to be a major holiday release so stores over-ordered tons of copies which wound up warming their shelves for months upon months. This movie is a much smaller release and stores only ordered a few copies each. At least in my area, those were depleted pretty quickly. I hope that they'll restock soon and get the corrected copies.

Yeah, that's true. I was thinking since anime is more a niche market, they may not go through stock as fast... but it sounds like they are selling well. So, sounds like good news for those that want to wait... hopefully!

who cares about the huge subtitles, they weren't THAT bad to be unwatchable. if anything what was unbearable was the dialogue, I really didn't like this movie. and I LOVE anime, liked the first GITS but this one even tho it was beautiful and sounded great, just didn't do it for me. too much quoting and i dunno, you either like listening to this sort of stuff or you don't, I fell asleep a couple of times before finishing it.

Picked up a corrected copy of this last night at Wal-Mart while I was waiting to get my oil changed. YMMV.

Glad to hear that the corrected version is showing up in stores now. I'll go check out my local ones soon.

How exactly do we know if it's the sub-corrected version? Some notation of "V.4"?

The size of the subtitles was 5% of the problem and point of this thread. The fact that they were closed captions rather than proper subtitles makes up the other 95%. It was definitely bad enough to negatively affect most people's viewing experience.

The V.4 is on the spine of the dvd.

heh, sorry I didn't keep up with the thread, I actually remember reading it way back when it started. I don't remember it being closed captioning style subtitles I just remmeber not liking the movie overall. But I know what you mean, the "preferred" version of My Sassy Girl on DVDBeaver is like that, I got that for my sister. When it came time for my own personal copy, I remember not being able to stand those "subtitles" so I sought out another release that had proper subs.

I'd also say that the size was about 5% of the problem.
But the higher than normal position of the subs is about 25% of the problem
- look below at how it obscures the image:

Which leaves the CC-subs at 70% of the problem...

Actually, it's on the security sticker on the top edge of the case. It says something like: "Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence V4". I already threw mine away, or I'd relate it exactly.

Your image isn't working for me, but I know what you're talking about, and admit my oversight. I gladly refine my original breakdown of the problem distribution from 5:95 to the more accurate 5:25:70.

Found a bunch of copies of the corrected version at Target today, priced at $19.99. Here's what the security sticker on the top of the case looks like:

well, i got my copy today in the mail, also, the subs seem to also be about an inch or two lower on the screen as well (they're closer to the black bar in this version)

Are new subs reddish orange like they were in the theaters?
The theater subs worked very well I thought. (And they were very discreet.)

Well, I just got my replacement - and YAY, the subs are corrected, and they're also a little bit smaller. But they could've still lowered them by a whole line... I guess 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

This is unacceptable.

I picked up a V4 copy at Best Buy yesterday, and even though the font and placement are better as reported here, the CLOSED CAPTIONING CRAP is still in there.

For instance, Dr. Haraway is introduced like so:

-And your name is?
-[Haraway] Haraway.

Plus many annoying sound cues.

So is there a V5 out there or a bad run of the 'corrected' discs? Should I send >this< copy back to Dreamworks?

If I find out they're all like this, then on principle I'm not buying a DVD from them for quite a long time.

That's not good news. You could try another one in hopes that the one you just got was a mistake. Otherwise, I would request the mailer and send it back to Dreamworks. I was going to wait too, but it was easier (and cheaper) to buy a used original disk and send it back to Dreamworks.

There are no sound cues on the replacement copy that was mailed to me.

It sounds to me like Best Buy got a bad batch.

I have been unable to find this title at any of the Wal-Marts or Targets in my area.

Sigh...

Despite the fact that this could cost me another month, and I waited this long, I filled out the Dreamjerks form and will swap discs with them. Which supposedly I shouldn't have had to do at all. I hope that finally fixes it.

By the way, someone else reported the same experience when purchasing a "V4" copy at Best Buy, on the thread linked to that anime forum earlier in this thread.
