When I first got a credit card, I had a nice little DVD shopping spree - nothing too expensive, just a lot for me as I am a poor college student. But I had that payed off in two months. I have some sizable balances now that I've been working on, and I wish they were for something fun like DVDs, but in reality they're mostly due to auto repairs. That's how I prefer to use my credit card - as a safety net for when I'm in a bind.

I have used credit cards to purchase all of my 900+ dvds. I put anything I can on my credit cards from groceries to phone bills. I happen to be fortunate enough to be able to pay my entire balance whenever I receive the statement. I know how to have credit cards work for me. Over $500 in credit card incentives last year through American Express and Discover have made credit cards my friend.

$150-$170 paycheck every Friday - No expenses//loans/debt = Loads of DVDs using my Debit Card. The way DVDs were meant to be bought :)

audiomixer, the reason you asked your question about debt was because you're smug about your decision to pay cash. You answer my question about how much money you make, and I'll tell you how much debt I have.
|
I am in debt but it has little or nothing to do with DVDs. It has more to do with a mortgage, a car loan, and my wedding last week. :)
There are always threads started by people who just want people to know how well off they are, or how much money they make, or something similar. Try to call them on it, they get defensive and say it wasn't the purpose. This thread obviously falls in that category. For more examples, check on the Other Forum every couple of days. |
I don't owe anybody in the whole world a red cent except this months American Express. I always mail order my DVDs, so I have to use a credit card, but I ALWAYS pay it off when it comes due - the whole thing. My house is mine, my clothes are mine, my computer is mine, nobody makes anything off me as far as interest!
My neighbor got himself in debt with stupid CC purchases - to the tune of over $10,000 - he just paid that off at $534/month for 10 years, so he ended up paying about $60,000 for a $10,000 "spree", with great deals like that who wants it?! Anyway... |
Couple hundred bucks, but its under control. Debit Cards are my #1 option.
|
Technically speaking no, none of my credit card debt is due to dvds, but then again every cent I spend I consider debt since I am a college student, which would mean that I actually haven't paid for any of my dvds yet...

Not at all.
Although I've spent a lot on DVDs (over $6000), I buy all my DVDs on credit and almost everything else on credit card for the sole purpose of getting the points. I pay off all my credit card balances in full every month. The only debt that I still have is college loans (dam you NYU and your $30,000 a year tuition). Although, I'm only paying the minimums due now since I quit my job 3 weeks ago. |
Never was, I buy these more cheaper than I can buy myself a full dinner at Tokyo

Debit card here. Like others I fell into the CC trap about 10 years ago and will never do so again. If I'm buying something with a CC it is and will be paid with money in my bank account. Own my own home, all I have is a vehicle payment.....and a kid, that always costs money :)

credit cards are TEH SUCK! If I aint got cash to pay for it...I aint gettin it...

Who gets in debt solely buying DVDs? I have a budget of $50 a month for DVD spending, and I use a credit card, but I always pay it off every month. My debts come from travel, health care, a car, student loan, etc. Hmmm, maybe even eating out! I never spend so much on DVDs that I go into debt because of them! In fact, I think I even make money off DVDs. I join Columbia house once a month, keeping two accounts open, selling the majority of DVDs bought through them to offset the 2 or 3 I keep. Plus I use credit card incentives like Bank One's Amazon card to buy other DVDs. Finally, I utilize offers on Free DVDs sites to get free DVDs. Then, in the end, if the DVD doesn’t seem worth keeping, I sell it at a profit, considering how cheap I get them in the first place. In debt because of DVDs? Me? Poppycock!

I'm in debt about 1.5K from car repairs, but not from dvds. Although, my buying of dvds isn't helping me pay off those credit card bills.

Originally posted by LasVegasMichael Or just young and naive (i.e. young and stupid), as I'm sure many DVD Talkers are. When I was 18, and first started opening credit cards, I admit, I went CRAZY. In one year I think I racked up about 15K in debt. I figured it out by my sophmore year in college that this was not the smartest thing to do, and started much better money management. Now, a decade, a wife, mortgage, and two kids later, I better damn well have it figured out by now. ;) Through college and one unemployed summer I racked up about 10K in debt. Yeah, a chunk maybe as much as 2K was probably DVDs. I bought computers, bar tabs, airline tickets, gas, everything under the sun. Well, the cards are gone. The debt is being eroded slowly, but it has left a lasting effect. My wife and I carry no credit. We are a debit card family. It hurts some months, but when the cards are payed off - eventually - life will get better. I control spending now - and if I can mature a little more I can slow it even more. I find it hard to believe everyone here is so financially well behaved. I think this thread is being dodged by the debters. I would have avoided it back before my cards were cancelled. |
Women are the only thing that causes me to collect debt...DVD's? ..never.

I'll admit. I'm in debt. But it's less because of DVDs than college expenses. I just bought DVDs instead of paying off more of my college debt. If I weren't so inclined to feed myself during school, I'd be much better off. Plus, I was essentially unemployed for most of last year which meant that even less got paid off. But now I've got a real job and I'm well on my way to becoming CC free. ....but I'm getting my MA next year (while I work full time) and my wife's got another year and a half in law school.... so who am I kidding. I'm swimming in it, baby. |
Not anymore. Being in debt just because of DVD is suck. That's one lesson I learned.

DVDs aren't the problem. It's the groceries.
