Are You In Debt Buying DVDs?
I was just curious how many of you are in credit card debt over buying DVDs. I buy a lot of them, but always pay cash. Just wondering HOW MUCH in debt some of you are?
I don't believe in credit cards, if you don't have the cash then don't buy it you know? I always buy with cash also, but dvd money is running out fast for these next months.
I'll bet some of you are 5-10 thousand dollars in debt over DVDs.
Nope.
No.
I am, but not solely from DVDs. No big deal, as i always have enough to pay significantly more then the minimums, so i'm not worried about carrying balances on my credit cards.
Nope.
I pay off my credit card every month. If I don't have the money to cover it, then I don't buy it. It's too bad the rest of the nation doesn't try that out.
No.
Most of us have mortgages or car payments I'm sure.
I spend no more in the typical month on DVDs than I used to spend on rentals, going to the theater, and movie cable channels, but I have a lot more to show for it.
audiomixer, I was just curious about what you do for a living and how much money you make a year.
Hmm... not really. I use my Visa (check-card) for everything... so it's basically the same as cash.
I don't do credit cards, at all.

I make sure I pay off my credit cards IN FULL each month - I even managed to do that after excessive DVD buying during the two 20% sales.
Cash only. (Taken from debit card) That is my "self-limiter"... if it won't fit in the budget, I don't buy all the ones I want that week.
Got bit by credit in the late 80's/90's. Never again! |
The only time I buy larger quantities of dvds is during DDD coupon sales where I use credit, but always pay it off when I get the statement. Otherwise I use cash for my regular dvd purchases, which are not excessive anyways.
I use my CC for online purchases. As soon as the statement comes in I pay the full balance though. It's just easier to use a CC online.
Cash only for DVDs... Credit cards are used for emergencies, clothing, etc, and are always paid off. So, no, no DVD (or home theater gear for that matter) debt at all. Of course, I've always maintained my collection at 300 or under and tend to rotate titles in and out every few months...

Originally posted by audiomixer I'll bet some of you are 5-10 thousand dollars in debt over DVDs. Umm, no. That would be beyond stupid. |
I guess one can see it as 'if I didn't buy DVDs I could have paid off my home loan by now' but that isn't so in my case, I would have spent the money on something else. I budget myself and though I'm amazed at how much I spend yearly on DVD I can see every penny of it.
Nope. Don't even use the CC anymore, except for online purchases which isn't often.
My only major debt right now is the mortgage.
Buy all DVDs with check card (cash). |
no
Considering that nearly 1 in 5 americans are in credit card debt i find the answers in this thread to be highly unlikely!...not to be a curmudgeon or anything, but all of near 20 have said no when stats say 4 have to be...that is just impossible.

scott1598: I'm guessing most people in debt are either in denial or don't want to advertise the fact. I know I wouldn't.
I pay off my credit cards in full every month. They must hate me because I never earn them any money, only take their rewards ;) |
I have credit card debt but its not entirely because of DVDs. Mostly because of work I had to have done on my car.
My only debt is normal: mortgage and car loan. I pay off my credit cards in full every month.
Anyone who gets in debt from buying too many DVDs is an idiot. If such people actually exist, they would do well to stand back and take a good hard look at their priorities in life, and straighten them out. |

In one year I think I racked up about 15K in debt. I figured it out by my sophmore year in college that this was not the smartest thing to do, and started much better money management. Now, a decade, a wife, mortgage, and two kids later, I better damn well have it figured out by now. ;) |

Wow, I can think of so many other things worth going into debt over - never something so frivolous as DVDs.

Originally posted by audiomixer And how much I make is NONE of your business! I find this response to his question quite humorous coming from someone who decided to ask in an open forum about other people's personal debts, if any. And before you reply about how "no one was forced to answer or post", allow me to present a pre-emptive retort by saying that, by that rationale, the rude reponse you gave to a truly comperable question to the one you were asking should have received equally rude responses, no? Funny that none of the responses to your question were replyed to with rude answers. In fact, the only rude response on this board, was yours. |
No, not even close.
Nope, thankfully, I'm able to pay my credit cards off in full each month.

When I was 18, I spent a lot of money on frivolous stuff too (of course, I lived with my parents and had no real expenses). But, if I racked up a big debt buying CDs, video games, old toys, booze, etc, (DVDs weren't invented yet, or I would have bought them too) my parents probably would have kicked me out of the house. I guess you learn how to spend your money wisely when you get older. (like me :( ) |
