Yes, and personally, I prefer the dts 6.1 ES discrete channels over dd's excellent 5.1 EX.

Are you listening to the dts track through a 5.1 or 6.1 setup?

There are many great DTS releases, but the two EE of LOTR are the best IMO. Nothing else comes close.

If I had to pick one DTS track, I'd have to go with Master & Commander.
The first encounter with the Acheron was simply amazing. Also my house is wood construction and when the crew members were running around above deck, I caught myself looking around a few times thinking "What the hell is that?"

also visually stunning but ultimately pointless

The Legend of Zu

has an unreal DTS soundtrack that has an out of this world stunning 360 degree soundfield and uncompressed dynamic range that feels like it wants to break free from your home theatre soundsystem. I have never heard such an agressive soundmix that creates a multitude of phantom sound sources - my jaw was on the floor.

little known secret, the Dolby Digital soundtrack on the OOP Saving Private Ryan laserdisc is even more amazing the DVD's audio tracks (DD and DTS!).

There were early Fox titles with the full bit-rate DTS track as well... the sweetest one of the bunch being their early release of The Thin Red Line (now OOP of course). What a stunning audio track! Well worth the hunt. I was spoiled early on with this one.

These have been mentioned already, but I would go with

Saving Private Ryan
Master and Commander
Dances w/ Wolves (OOP 2-disc)
Blade II
U-571

Butterfly Effect (haven't seen it yet) is suppose to have a great DTS track.

I agree with the OOP Dances with Wolves. I couldn't believe the number of people I saw on eBay dumping this set when the MGM edition came out (sans DTS). This set is a gem.

yeah, the best show off scene in the movie is when we first see the creature, mainly because we first just see 2 people in love in a cabbin (or somehting like it), nice and quiet, nad then bam, scared the shit out of me.

the sound design team totally disregarded the sanity of the DVD listener IMO, the force and loudness of the surround tracks is cringe inducing, literally everytime the creature attacks the sound comes from behind and is quite frankly ear assaulting.

~

oh and also the Mortal Kombat (DTS laserdisc) is loud, fun and in your face.

Well, every time this question comes up, I feel the need to add this:

The best DTS tracks come from the "full" bit rate discs that are 1509 bps DTS. These were many of the original DTS discs released in the late nineties including:

12 Monkeys
Amistad
Antz
Apollo 13
Blues Brothers 2000
Born on the Fourth of July
The Boxer
Dances with Wolves
Dantes Peak
Daylight
Dragonheart
Edtv
The Flintstones
For Richer For Poorer
Galaxy Quest
Interview with a Vampire
The Jackal
Mercury Rising
Mouse Hunt
The Nutty Professor
Out of Sight
Patch Adams
Paulie
The Peacemaker
Primary Colors
The River Wild
Small Soldiers
The Thin Red Line
Twister
Waterworld

I'm not saying that all of these have great soundtracks, but these are the examples of why DTS was originally far superior to DD. These days almost all releases are half bit rate DTS (754 bps).

B&K avr 507
5 M&K 150
2 M&K ss150
2 M&K mx350 subs

Still think the DD sounds better in all the ways people use to describe DTS improvements. Better LFE, more active surrounds, clearer dialog. Thats why I think the DTS track is overrated in this case. And I hate to see someone with a new system get the impression that his discs need to have DTS to be worthwhile.

I also don't want to hi-jack the thread into a Blade 2 argument because no matter how you listen to it is a great DVD.

Take a break from all these explosions and check out Winged Migration or the home theater mix of The Lion King. Very active and immersive surround discs that won't scare Grandma but still wow the audience.

Good Call. The fight scenes are amazing, especially the first one in the rain.

to Master and Commander

Nobody mentioned Jurassic Park?

The whole ground shakes when you can hear the T-Rex footsteps approaching.

For some reason I remember someone telling me how they looked at SPR DTS track in pro tools and they found it clipped in a number of places, most noteably the scene where the airplane bombs the bridge. I always thought that The Red Violin had a great DTS track, atleast its a better demo for me when I have a husband and wife combo looking at gear. WAF can make or break a sale and usually the wife isn't quite as interested in bullets whizzing by her head

"Die Another Day" has an excellent one.
I think "Open Range" is DTS, regardless, the track was awesome, though the movie wasn't.

I would have to go with:

Heat DTS R2 Japan
Shawshank DTS R2 Japan
The Core DTS R3 Japan
Fast And The Furious
Fifth Element (Superbit and R2 UK Release)
Lola Rennt R2 Germany
Gladiator
Ronin DTS R2 Japan
Small Soldiers

...the list goes on and on.
