Ok, I'm new here, but I'm curious as to what people think. The link should be below if I did it correctly.

MaudlinHarold 08-20-04 11:03 PM

Hmm. I'm curious. Opinion(s)?

Thats exactly what I've been doing lately. I was buying alot of movies that I barely watched after the first viewing. I paid so little for them (cost of a rental) that it was more cost effective to just buy them. Latlely, I've been selling off alot of those and buying more foreign discs. My buying habits have shifted from BestBuy and Walmart to Xploited Cinema and CDWow.
Good...Young Padawan...you are learning from the selling masta here...but you still need to get rid of more...myself...I went from 950 down to 240...it took me damn near a year...but I did it...and am extremely happy I did...

First off, I won't hold it against you that only 4% of your collection is horror/suspense ;) Other than that we share a good number of titles.

You have a very fine collection going! It's a nice mix of international, along with Criterions. IMO, the crap level is almost non-existent. I was happy to see Plan 9 From Outer Space in there :) Hmmm but you have Hot Shots! Part Deux but not the first Hot Shots!???

Also it's cool that Steve Buscemi is your Top Actor :)

If you haven't already done so you must get your hands on the films of Hayao Miyazaki for you and your daughter. Present Region 1 releases include: Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro (great film, but wait for better release coming in 2005 along with two other titles), and for older children, Princess Mononoke.

Corleone316 08-21-04 11:57 AM

I've added some new titles. Check it out.

Skyler 08-21-04 12:52 PM

Thanks for the advice. I just set up DVD Aficionado. Pretty cool. Which program works better with a PDA, DVD-Pro or DVD-Af? Also, is a Palm or Pocket PC better?

whitedeath1978 08-22-04 11:36 PM

go ahead people rate mine but be gentle lol

QuiGonJosh 08-23-04 04:49 AM

Yojimbo
Jaws
Duel
Indiana Jones
2001
Alien Quadrilogy
Apocalypse Now
Terminator
Once Upon a Time in the West (Its $8 at Sams Club...$8!!! For a two disc edition of one of the best flicks ever!)

would someone be kind of enough to rate my collection?

http://www.dvdaficionado.com/dvds.ht...1&id=zidane349

Started collecting in june of this year, and i figure since the year is almost over id like some opinions if i did a good job this year.

i started with one dvd in june(clone wars FS) i mostly use to rent, but with my new hdtv in june i started buying.

i'm 17 years old so i might have weird taste in movies... lol be gentle :P

ThriceDamned 12-31-04 04:44 AM

You have the beginnings of a fine collection Zidane. Quite mainstream for the most part, but not many total clunkers (although some are necessary. We all need a bad movie now and again - Bad Boys II, I'm looking at you). Overall, I´d rate it a 7/10. Some refinement is needed.

Therefore, I'd like to make some suggestions.

As you seem to be quite fond of gangster films (or perhaps I´m misreading it as a Scorsese fetish) I´d like to recommend "Once Upon A Time In America", Sergio Leone's seminal 1984 gangster film. Also, Warner is releasing the "Warner Gangsters Collection" in January, with 5 must-have gangster films, among them the masterpieces "White Heat" and "Angels with Dirty Faces".

Also, I'd urge you to explore more "foreign" cinema (what a weird concept that is for me, the european). As you have "Seven Samurai" and both the "Kill Bill's", you're sure to love the "Lone Wolf & Cub" ultra-bloody-yet-horrendously-cool samurai movies, one of the chief influences on Kill Bill.

Some tidbits to close off with.

- Criterion is your friend and ally against the darkness that would engulf you
- Oldboy was the best film of 2004
- South-Korea has the most vital cinema in the world today (and by far the coolest dvd's)

I wish you happiness and lots of fun dvd collecting :)

Speed-reading through your list:

Young Frankenstein-A Mel Brooks must and the disc is cheap.
Spartacus (Criterion)-I see plenty of Kubrick, and titles like Ben Hur and Gladiator in your collection, this is requried.
The Rock (Criterion)-Probably the best of the Nic Cage popcorn flicks.
Master and Commander CE - looks like you're a fan of Crowe
Return of the King-complete the trilogy
Creature Black Lagoon/Mummy/Invisible Man Monster Legacy - quality discs to enhance your Universal Monster collection
Good, Bad, and the Ugly SE - A great disc, and a better movie.
Star Wars Trilogy - ?

slop101 01-04-05 09:45 AM

do me do me! - and please suggest things I should get rid of. I need to prune my collection.

Indeed. Naturally, the former is my wife's and the latter is mine. It's "our" DVD collection. I think it'll be pretty clear what titles are whose. 98% of it is mine :)

SRotblat 01-04-05 10:47 AM

I'm always looking for film recommendations, check out my collection in the sig

I'm no expert but you've got a lot of titles I'm interested in picking up as $$ allow. Over all a 8/10
