"The Return of the Living Dead" DVD - August 27th

Tweaked, ha!
Hey about the movie being tweaked... I couldn't get on that forum cuz they don't like aol, but I think I know what the differences are.. more like goof-ups. Its really only two scenes that used to have songs over them and now don't. The strange thing is, when I watched the movie with the commentary, the songs were on that track.. hmmm. I gues it was a mistake in the mastering. One is when the paramedics go off into a corner to talk about Freddy and Frank, a song starts up and plays through the scene with the punks having barred up the basement door over at Uneeda. The second one is when Frank burns himself up, the song playing stops too soon. Its quite strange since its on the commentary track. oh wait, does anyone really care but me? Heh heh

The Thread Starter : "Why must they change things for DVD release? The "Brains" Tarman zombie voice is changed. It was made much deeper. When he says "Brains" to the girl, then "More Brains" to the gang. I've seen it at least 20 times and noticed it immediately. Why not just leave it alone?"
Followed by : "Yeah right. Another f&ck up, The zombie that says, "Send more cops" was changed also, real deep and sounds stupid. Sad."
And : "And yet another screw up, When Frank cremates himself, the song "Burn the Flame"? was cut off when he jumps on the sliding tray. He pushes himself in and closes the door, the music stops. He burns and screams. But with no music?!? The laughing in the song and Frank's screaming is classic, and it's GONE. My VHS has the music thru the whole scene.
EDIT: The "Send more Paramedics" zombie is the same. The ending credits will get you mad, you see parts of the movie. It uses Brains zombie's original voice, not the new one. Stupid!"
And here seems to be the reason for the changes : "The mono mix on this release is not the original theatrical mix, but a new, slightly re-designed mono mix created by O'Bannon. Read on (this is from ROTLD special edition campaign page):
quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The even better news, MGM *will* be using Dan's new sound mix for the DVD. Dan's original mix for the film was never used originally as the producers changed it after he had finished. In some scenes the music was too loud, making it difficult to hear what the actors were saying. This has all been fixed. Also, some sound effects have been enhanced or otherwise replaced entirely. For example, the sound of the atomic blast at the end of the film has been given more bass, Tarman's voice is now more in tune with how Dan wanted him to sound, etc. Dan feels that the sound is now better and richer than ever, he's "very pleased...quite tickled" with it.
As for what type of sound mix the DVD will have, Dan said it will be digital mono. Now some of you might wonder why it wasn't remixed for Dolby Digital 5.1. Dan explained that 1) It would've taken more time and money than was available and 2) He didn't feel it was necessary saying that even Stanley Kubrick never bothered with mixing his movies that way.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------"
And more : "Another change,
VHS Copy: Suicide gets killed, the gang runs upstairs, hammers the door shut and argue with each other, then run to the cemetary. There's a song playing for the ENTIRE scene.
DVD: Song doesn't start until they run to the cemetary. It missing from most of the scene."

You know...i was worried about this new mix!
Now maybe i won't mind once i find a copy...but the music & how it was used in the film was a major part of the experiance & added immensely to it..such as "Take A Walk" playing throughout the hammering the door scene & as they run out into the cemetatary. it just added both a uneasy dread & dark comedy at the same time with the song playing over the entire scene!
+ Franks creamation was perfect as it is. The music added a saddness to the scene,it was dark,depressing...& then you hear frank scream as the camera pulls back while the music plays in the background.
Anyway it would have been great had they included both the original theatrical mix & Dan's mix to make him & everyone happy!

One song was removed at they could no longer use it legally, everything else was changed specifically by the director.
The version YOU are all familiar with was the producer's version NOT what the director originally intended. The new soundmix accurately represents his wishes.

I know....but since the soundtrack was perfect as it was. It hardly needed any 'tweaking',even if they couldn't use one song because of rights issues,at least keep the rest of the soundtrack the same + offer the director's mix as well.
In fact they where going to use the original theatrical mix. Yet i think Dan talked them into letting him use his new mix(hence why the original mix may be heard on the commentary as it was not yet on the print he watched),while MGM uses there transfer..& the DC with have Dans prefered transfer. So since they had to compromise....at least include both soundtracks since it was a major part of why the film was succesful.
I just hope Surfin Dead is not changed
That song + sequence rocks!

Most of all, we must not forget.
If it weren't for Evilbaby this DVD would not have existed in the first place. If it weren't for the constant emails, petitions, and actual talks with O'bannon himself, these extras would not be there
THANK YOU EVILBABY!!!!!!

Hey folks, an interesting item to pass along.
"ROTLD" DP Jules Brenner is running a suvey for fans on his web site;
http://variagate.com/ldsurvey.htm
Basically it's asking, would you want to see a CD/DVD companion to the MGM DVD featuring interviews with cast/crew members? Who would you wanna hear from, what would you like answered, etc etc etc?
Please take a few minutes and give him your thoughts. Remember, Jules and co. have had 2 major reunions this year and uh...they've apparently been talking about this and just want to gauge if there's any interest in such a project.

Insert or Booklet?
I just picked up ROFLD from Wal-Mart for a reasonable price. When I got home and opened it, I did not find an insert or booklet. I searched the forums but did not find any mention of this title coming without an insert. Can anyone confirm if I was unlucky and got one without an insert, or if it doesn't have an insert at all?

Hey Evil Baby,
Thanks, I like this DVD and am not the least bit pissed off about someone's voice being deeper and songs missing, I did not really notice. It's a funny movie and I still laugh out loud at the midget zombie scene.
Think you can get Night of the Demons on DVD too?
Anyhow thanks man. I guess persistence pays off.

Well I was recently contacted by Ryko and was informed that they own the rights to the soundtrack now and plan on re-issuing it on CD. Now here's where you come in;
Ryko wants to know what YOU, the fans of ROTLD want on the CD. That's it. Whatever ideas of you can come up with, e-mail them to me at: [email protected] and they will be passed along.
Thanks for your help!
