"The Return of the Living Dead" DVD - August 27th
What you've all been waiting for! MGM now has set a release date for "The Return of the Living Dead" DVD!
It will come out on August 27th. It will have all the extra features I've been talking about on my site
http://members.tripod.com/~evilbaby/ROTLD.html
for a while now; audio commentary by writer/director Dan O'Bannon and production designer William Stout, new video transfer mastered from the original negative, newly created sound mix by O'Bannon, featurette (though I'm not sure everything it will contain, I do know O'Bannon and Stout recorded new interviews for it), theatrical trailer and though other internet reports aren't mentioning it, O'Bannon told me the DVD is supposed to have a stills gallery of Stout's sketches/artwork from the film. Movie to be presented in 4:3 full screen and 1.78 widescreen (internet reports seem to be going with 1.85 widescreen but O'Bannon told me he went with 1.78 instead.)
I just got off the phone with MGM and they confirmed the internet reports on the release date. Now we all know when our day of joy will come. Sure it won't be a huge special edition but remember, if it sells well....say hello to "The Return of the Living Dead: Director's Cut"!
By the way, I did ask about a VHS re-release as well and the bad news to all you non-DVD people out there, there won't be one. MGM is "phasing out" VHS! I'd suggest if you want "ROTLD", you buy a DVD player soon.

I'm not a big fan, but is this the flick that had a bit of a stink recently where the studio wasn't going to use the new transfer and supplements?
Are they indeed "doing the right thing"?

MGM is using O'Bannon's new sound mix.
So yeah, they're doing the right thing.

BTW, I checked out your site and I love the music! Haven't heard that in years.

It's sort of, but not really a spoof of, the Romero "Dead" movies.
The central conceit of ROTLD is that the three Romero movies are just movies, but they were loosely based on real events. In fact, we have one of the re-animated bodies down in the basement, stored in a barrell.
Wanna see it?

Is it any good!!!?
This is the funniest horror black comedy to come out of the 80s --just edging out Reanimator-Evil Dead 2 etc...
While it may have borrowed/homage Romero's Dead ROTLD has been imitated (poorly) by many modern attempts at zombie horror.
Buying 2 copies just to ensure the Directors Edition gets made.

I won a radio package that included posters, t-shirts and a bunch of tickets to see ROTLD. I went to the theater with a buddy intending to use a pass to get in and switch theaters to see something good, but for reasons I don't remember we ended up watching ROTLD anyway. It was the funniest movie either of us had seen in years! We used all the passes to watch it over and over, and when it came out on VHS it became a party night favorite.
I liked the punk soundtrack but even friends who don't care for punk agreed that it worked in this movie. It is very goofy at times and if you are a horror purist, you may not like this one. The comparrisons to Re-Animator and the Evil Dead series are right on... if you liked those, you'll like this. It's been a long time since I've seen it, so I couldn't comment on the production quality. I recall the effects being pretty decent, better than you'd expect in a low budget horror spoof. What makes this movie so much fun is the writing and the casting. Clu Gulager as 'Burt' and Don Calfa as 'Ernie' are terrific, and yes the Burt and Ernie bit is intentional and just one of many very subtle jokes scattered throughout the film. You'll catch something new each time you see this. Given the price, pick it up!

i don't like when studio rushing things out & expect us (customers/fans) to buy whatever junk they put on us
specially when they use excuses...
i know the disc ain't that expensive ($10), but still... as a fan, my expectation is running high

If any of you are picking this up at Amazon and want to share the love, hit me at
Scratch that, I see it now at DDD for under $10 shipped. No need for Amazon STL at that price.

Nice website, evilbaby. Thanks for all the hard work and updates. And thanks to MGM for once again proving that they are becoming a top-notch producer of DVDs. They really have been putting an effort into pleasing the fans lately.
