I'd like the "Definitive Edition" Laserdisc versions remastered and upgraded to 5.1
I can't really call them the original theatrical editions, because alot of the special effects were cleaned up.
I really dont mind the SE versions except for Greedo shooting first.
Its funny that I really never hear much complaint about any other aspect of the SE versions except Han and the Hutt.....

But, as I mentioned earlier I will still buy the SEs. It didn't RUIN the movie for me, because overall it's still the same movie, just with some ackward modifications.

Maybe it's nostalgia for me because growing up I watched the OT so many times. When the SEs were introduced it just seemed that the added "enchanced" scenes were out of place and odd.

People born before 1980: Want Original
Born after 1980: Want SE
Maybe it's just a situation where these young kids nowadays with their "rock and/or roll" and long hippie hair just want the story/special effects only available in such fine films as Pearl Harbor, Independence Day, and Episodes 1-3.

Again, ultimately it's GLuca$' decision, I suppose, so it's not a big deal. But what the hell - he's ruined the franchise anyway (with the steaming piles of crap that are: Ep. 1 & 2) so he might as well add a few silly scenes to SW 4-6. And for those of you who missed it, I have an important announcement about upcoming releases for Ep. 4-6:
1. Special Edition - 2004
2. Special Edition with deleted scenes - 2005
3. Special Edition with digitally added scenes, digitally altered and extended! - 2006
4. Special Edition with chapters all mixed up (a la Pulp Fiction) - 2007
5. Special Edition with digitally added Jar Jar Binks (he trips! he falls! he bonks his head! - hilarity ensues!) - 2008
6. Special Edition where old Ben Kenobi travels back in time in a Delorean after hitting 88 mph to stop himself from training Anakin - 2009
7. Special Edition where Anakin travels back in time to kill Adolf Hitler - 2010
8. Classic, true edition - (with over four hours of new digitally added scenes!) - 2011
9. Special Edition with Chewbacca full-frontal nudity - his bits and pieces are covered by fur, so it's still rated PG - 2012
10. Classic Edition - complete and unedited - 2013*
*This date is subject to change. Classic Edition only available as part of a set, including the pieces of utter crap that are episodes 1-3. Lucasfilms reserves the right to alter this edition digitally...

Unfortunately, you can't preorder it yet. Luca$ is still working on digitally adding scenes featuring those "fish villains", the "jewish" flying ant-eater guy, and Chewbacca's sister, all who played vital roles in the original series, but unfortunately, had to remove them at the time of their release. By digitally re-adding them, they will look better and the special effect will look even better!

So, if the DVD release of the original trilogy is only going to be the "special edition" versions, does that mean there is some merit to having the original, unaltered trilogy on VHS?
Yeah, VHS, that cassette-like thingee with the tape inside it.
I do have that set somewhere. It might be old-tech, but at least it's unaltered.

No, we didn't miss it. We were just trying to ignore you!

The thing that made the original series (and particulary Ep. 4, which I think is the best) so great was the story and sense of adventure - NOT the special effects (which for the time, they were great). Now, the focus is on the special effects FIRST, and the story, direction, script, and acting SECOND.
I can't even say I'm a *HUGE* fan of the original series. But I'd probably complain just as much if Gone with the Wind were digitally modified to make Mammy a white woman, so as not to offend African-American/Blacks (and in particular, if that were the only release on DVD).
And yes, the primary reason I created this thread was to whine, complain, and generally bitch about the release. So? If you don't like it, create your own thread and talk about how *GREAT* Ep. 1-3 are.

Option D. Super Duper Extra Special Editions with Ian McDirmid in ESB, Jimmy Smits in ANH, Hayden Christiansen in ROTJ, etc. I'm serious! I'm all about consistency. I never even noticed that Greedo dude shooting first until dorks on the net mentioned it. I didn't even know the dude's name (Greedo).

I'm with you, when I saw the movie, I just thought of him as a flying, mean-spirited, ant-eater-lookin-thing.

But tell you what - I'll let you have that one. E1 was a momentary lapse of sanity and reason for the entire human race. Why then in gods name did E2 make SHIT-LOADS of money? If everyone was so disgusted by the movies, and walked away from the franchise like you detractors claim - then explain Attack of the Clone's box office?
Or if the special editions suck so badly, then why is it the number one preorder on just about every amazoon/buy/bestbuy.com retailer out there?
And tell you what - lets hold this conversation sometime around the middle of September, 2005 - were Episode 3 will have had made a SHIT-LOAD of money - and yet with I can say with 100 percent certanty, the movie will be unable to live up to your lofty expectations. Thusly it too will "suck".
Pretty good for a dead franchise, huh?
No - what's happening here is that there is a very, very small (yet amazingly vocal) portion of the human race that seems unable to let go of these movies. "Blah, blah, blah George Luca$ eats babies!" they go, being a big fish in a very small pond. Meanwhile all the OTHER people on the planet go: "Star Wars? That was the one with Darth Vader, huh? Cool!" and coulndnt care less if Greedo shot first or not.

Anyway, I'm not extremely anal about all things DVD. I don't care so much about OAR so long as something is anamorphic widescreen (opening up some 2:35:1 movies to 1:78 doesn't bother me as long as it still looks good). That said, I would really love it if Lucas were to release the originals in a completely unaltered fashion. Not because it's "the right thing to do" or because he raped my childhood. I would simply like to have the option of seeing them exactly as they were when I saw them in theaters as a kid. I was very young at the time, probably 6 years old when the first one came out and it was like magic to me back then. I'll still get some good nostalgia from the SE's but I think some small amount of that is lost without the originals.
I won't lose any sleep over it but I would DEFINITELY double dip if it were released down the road in a theatrical version.

This wasnt the case - the movie was still making some serious bank 2 months after the premere.

I never said the franchise was dead. It's just the good movies ended at Ep. 6 (IMNSHO). But Ep. 1-2 really both sucked - laughable dialog "I HATE Obi-Wan - this is all HIS fault!" (snivel). "I hate the sand - it's rough - not like your hair - it's soft and smooth". Yes, you're right - what a script! What acting! And don't forget those nail-biting council meetings! And Jar-Jar - oh how funny it was when he stepped in alien poo-poo!
Oh, don't forget the EXCITING pod race! Wow, "Anny" is a GREAT pilot! "whee!!!" Wasn't it so exciting when he "accidentally" blew up that mother-ship and NARROWLY escaped!?! And being a guy, I loved it when Amadala got injured by that beast - which tore off half her top, revealing her belly!
And how about that harrowing factory in Ep 2 when Amadala would have been done for, if not for the awesome jet pack that R2 had? Whew! That was CLOSE! I'm glad R2 used that jet-pack in later episodes...The thing I love the most about Ep 1-2 (and 3, surely) is - I was never aware that so many coincidences could happen in such a large galaxy! Having R2 and 3PO in these three is fine, but that they 3PO was actually MADE by Anakin - BRILLIANCE! And that Greedo is walking around in Ep 1 - FANTASTIC! I'm so glad that we'll get to see Chewy in the next movie! I can't wait, because it seems the fate of the galaxy rests in about 8 people's hands. I heard Lando will be in Ep 3, also. He'll be Chewy's sidekick and they'll meet up with "Joe" Solo. "Meet my son, Han - he's good friends with Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen - who happen to go to boarding school with Boba Fett. Boba Fett was Anakin's father, but don't tell! And Boba Fett used to date Obi-Wan who is the brother to Ewoks and help them build their giant land ships..." You get the picture.
