EPKJ: So how do you get the improved resolution cover scans?
You cannot do so without connecting to their service through the internet.
I don't see why you can't understand that. It's pretty simple.

Well, I am finally able to view my collection via Netscape again, which brings me back up to full functionality. The one caveat is that I was only able to finally see it online at 1:30 AM EST . . . during the rest of the day, I was getting the "too many users" message.

About hi res scans:
In my Profiler I don't use the DVD scans. I scour the web for original poster art (www.filmsite.org is good for old movies; www.crankycritic.com is good for more contemporary; look up Dr. Z and posters for a decent set of foreign and cult posters).
Before I subscribed, if I couldn't find such posters I'd go to amazon.com, look up the DVD, click on the "large image" button (or the image itself, really). Then you simply right click and copy, go to Profiler and paste on the thumbnail on the right. Voila. Hi res, no blur. For back covers was more difficult, but again, I want original poster art, not DVD art so I didn't concern myself. I believe that dvdempire or dvdplanet and davisdvd post back covers.
Anyhoo, long story short... you can use hi res. You just don't get it from them. I won't bother myself figuring if that's service or product. I'm supposed to be preparing a lesson plan right now

Yeah, I'm slightly miffed over this "collection not available" message.
Strange thing is I got it when I was viewing my collection and decided to sort the list by title. Each time I tried to look, I got the same message. But if I opened another IE browser, I was able to view my collection through the 2nd IE... could sort with no problems. If I switch back to look at my collection through the 1st IE, I still get "collection not available".

I have been playing with Collectorz.com to replace dvdprofiler as my hard copy of my collection, and I like it a lot, although it is going to take me forever to import my collection at this rate. May be worth it though, it is up in the air. Has anyone else found anything else worth trying? I don't want to pay for this and then find the perfect alternative right afterwards.

I took alook a Opticenter and thought I would try it. First it will not allow me to log in, it tells me my email address is bad. When I downloaded the .zip it did not contain the program. I know I am not computer literate, can you tell me where I am going wrong?

Randy,
I haven't installed it yet myself, but the zip looks to be complete. In order for it to work, your web site needs access to MySQL Database Server 3.23.5 (or better) and PHP 4.1.2 (or better). According to the INSTALL.txt file, these are the steps in order to get it up and running (all these should take place on your web server):
Insert DB tables using schema.sql, take care of table prefix.
Change configuration settings to your needs in global.php.
Make directory images/thumbnails writeable for the script, copy DVD cover images from DVDprofiler to this directory.
Export your DVD collection in DVDprofiler and save as collection.xml in this script's directory.
Read in XML file and fill DB by calling index.php?action=update from your browser.

Thank you for the instructions. As I said I am computer illerate.
Insert DB tables using schema.sql, take care of table prefix.
Are these the information that is listed for each dvd?
Change configuration settings to your needs in global.php.
How do I know what needs to be changed?
I went to each file opened after unzipping, and I am told that
the computer cannot read the file extensions.
I am going to have to find some extensions my very new media center xp will accept.
Thanks again for your help. I will try to find the right extensions today.

I like to think I know a fair amount about computers but that installation process also has me stumped. Guess I'll just stick with the normal DVD Profiler for now.

Randy,
This package is meant to be run on the same machine that your webserver runs on. If you're trying to install this stuff on your PC, it's not going to work. It needs a mysql database and php. These are most prevelant in unix/linux environments.
I'm still planning on trying it out at some point, perhaps in the next few weeks. My web server (apache) runs on a linux box and I have mysql and php. I'll keep detailed notes of the steps I do for installation; and assuming I get it sucessfully installed, I'll post the notes on my web site.

Well, at least we know why it took them over a week to get back online. They were busy making the free version less useful by limiting uploads and setting up the new server to give precedence to subscribers first.

This has probaly been discussed, but I could not find where.
All of the DVDTrackers do not have the comprehensive information or the thumbnails that DVDProfiler has.
I like having all this information in one place.
I found that even with the new UPC imports that DVDAF is offering, too many of my dvds are still not recognized. Even using the ASIN from Amazon does not get the dvd listed. DVDAF tells me to enter the dvd using their "sumit DVD" form. This will not do for my 68 dvds not recognized.
Guzzlefish is a very poor replacement.
mediachest is difficult to import from somewhere other than DVDPro or DVDAF.
IS there any tracker that is similar to DVDProfile?
It has everything I want, and I am very reluctant to leave them.
Is my frustration showing?
Maybe we should all go for therapy, since we are all fixated on this.
Rambling over.
Thanks for listening

The database won't download for anyone, but DVDProfiler.com seems to be up and down.
It's been a week that they've been kinda halfway semi up and they're still having exactly the same problems.

skipnet - How is it different if you paid for it? As far as I know all that does is allow you to download better quality scans and allows to turn off ads. No big deal. The rest of the program is the same so it's strange that you are able to download the database and I can't... And in any case that doesn't explain that dvdprofiler.com isn't loading too.
