To be fair being a former Borders employee, they probably received the e-mail to pull them before you got there.

Taking your statement and putting a spin on it makes seem like I (or others) bought the only copies in existence. As one other DVDTalker stated to me in an e-mail asking me to hold one for him and I'm paraphrasing here: "People on the forum are acting like this DVD is like a kidney.... something they need to survive".

It's like me holding you responsible for me not getting eggs they day Stop & Shop had their eggs on sale: Buy 1 dozen, get 2 dozen free and you got there before I did.

I lucked out with insider info and that's that.

Oh yeah, and I found my copy of Ed Wood at Blockbuster the Saturday before release.

It basically involved a policy change of prepping DVDs out on the sales floor. They we're no longer were going to allow it and I could only do so off the sales floor. They only way I could be off the sales floor was if they hired another person to be on the floor, which they said they were not going to do. The kicker was that I was prepping between 300 - 400 DVDs (sometimes more during holidays) in the 4 days I worked and was also on the sales floor ringing up and helping customers. They stated that I was going to be responsible for getting the same amount of DVDs out and managing to keep my 4 book sections nice and neat and still ring up customers and such. (Amazingly I was accomplishing these tasks the way I was doing it). Short of coming in on my 2 days off, there was no possible way I could accomplish that and still have the same level of productivity and stated so to management's dissatisfaction and I gave my 3 week notice, which they shortened to 1 day and we parted ways.

Funny, after I left they had a meeting and found that things weren't getting out as quickly as they once were and hired 2 people to replace me. So obviously what I had stated finally clicked and they needed 2 people (1 to be on the floor and 1 to prep DVDs).

Sigh...... Corporate Wisdom is great.

So, a little late into the game, I went out looking for copies Thursday night. 1st place I went to Warehouse Music in Hampton, VA, had 1 copy. Then, a BlockBuster in Hampton, they had 1 copy. Then a Warehouse Music in Norfolk, they had 1 copy. Then a BlockBuster somehwere in Virginia Beach, I think, they had 1. But I also struck out at 3 other BlockBusters. I tried one K-Mart, with no luck. Also, a store called PlanetMusic, but they didn't have any. Also checked 2 MovieGallerys, but they didn't have any.

Now, I have to decide what to do with all 4 of my sealed copies.
I paid $30 for each, except one that was on sale for $28.

Oh, I did my Master's thesis on The World-View of Director Tim Burton and his movies through Sleepy Hollow. Its not like I'm just jumping on the bandwagon. I have studied all of his films, including Ed Wood. (I even tried to get a copy of the DVD on Tuesday from Best Buy, but since they didn't have any, I figured no one would, until I began reading the success stories here).
If any one is curious, I could probably send a digital copy of it. email me at [email protected]

Some moron bought one at the Borders in Cambridge MA on Tuesday and then told the employee not only about the recall, but that "information about it was posted on the DVDTalk website, so expect a lot of people".

Nice.

So you were nice enough to offer 3 weeks and they said just to finish out the day? Then had to hire 2 more staff to fix the problem? wtf.

Sometimes people accuse me of not being in favor of capitalism...although I love consumerism (as shown by how many different format versions (5 in total) of Ed Wood I'll have at my place once I get a hold of the R1 SE. Not to mentio the posters (threatre and home video versions) and all the actual Wood DVD's and books) I just tend to have a hunch that alot of the people *running* the corporations are not that smart...which worries me.

Slightly offtopic...has anybody ever seen any Ed Wood action figures (like McFarlane Toys etc.)?

Well shoot. I was at a Blockbuster tonight (rented "Once Upon a Time in Mexico") and saw a copy. Most I've ever paid for a single DVD, but hey!

I'm wondering if the cover might be part of the reason this was recalled...

Add a silver border around that with Special Edition on top and "Winner of Two Academy Awards". It's the same cover art as the R2 release, according to a couple of web sites.

I'm not that prudish, but having seen the VHS box art for years, seeing a half-naked Sarah Jessica Parker made me do the Conan O'Brien "Huh??" look.

EDIT: The back summary has recent credits listed for everyone (Depp's Pirates; Bill Murray's Lost in Translation; Parker's Sex in the City; Burton's Big Fish, etc.). I guess I'm curious like everyone else why this was recalled...

What's wrong you? I've seen FAR FAR worse covers that show even less. That shot is actually very artful and well.. I don't see why a studio would pull this at the final moment to change a cover if the cover has been floating around for a while.

I can safely say that it was not pulled for the cover.

this isnt any sort of Janet Jackson backlash.

All I was doing was speculating. Read my post... I'm not bothered by it, it caught me off guard. (I guess I should say I've never seen all of the film, just bits and pieces throughout the years)

I'd be seriously bothered if it was a half-naked Martin Landau, though.

I had a copy in my hand on Tuesday, but decided I only had enough money to buy two other DVDs. Thought I would go back today and pick it up. I should have read this forum earlier in the week. DAMN!!!!

I went all over town today looking for a copy. I was even going to see if someone had it for rent, so I could buy that copy. No luck. I have a friend that works at Best Buy and he said they still have theirs in the back storeroom. He didn't know what was going on. They have strict orders not to sell though.

***UPDATE***

I was at the local mall with my wife just a little while ago. I decided to check the Sam Goodys store as a last chance. They had three copies of the DVD. I just bought one for myself since I haven't really had good luck reselling stuff on eBay.

Nope, I keep looking for one though each time I visit a Borders or any store that carries DVDs. Each time I'm more resolved to not getting one, because I know that window of opportunity has surely closed. Hoping for an eventual release.

Hi everyone, 2/7/04

I’m sorry, but I can’t find my .doc file. But I do have a PDF file, except it is rather large at 5MB. It can be downloaded from here till 2/10/04 (if you miss this window, let me know, and I can try to get new access to the file):
http://wwwlib.umi.com/pqdd-pdf/bbfee...41a383/3237813

You can get the adobe reader here if you do not already have it:
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html

As I look back over it, I think this really is a bad thesis. Oh well, I’m working right now on a dissertation, that will hopefully be better. My best insight on Burton and his worldview comes in the final chapter, although it is rather short. This was my thesis for my Masters degree at Regent University in Virginia in their Film
Criticism program.

Do let me know, though, if you find this thesis in any way interesting or helpful, or if you have any questions/comments/concerns. Thanks.

I was lucky enough to pick up a copy at FYE a week before the release or so...

In my opinion I don't see Ed Wood coming to DVD in a long time after this.. It is Ed Wood and after how many slipped through the cracks and people get there fill on eBay the market won't be too high... not to mention the money that was lost in the recall..

I am just happy to have it sitting there between Fear and Loathing CC and Citizen Kane on my shelf..

I won a copy on ebay (48 including shipping) Sure, not a value by any means, but hey, at least I got a copy. And I am justifying it to myself by saying that I have payed that much for at least a couple of criterions. Anyways, I'm a happy camper.

This was some recall, ebay is still loaded. Peaked at 380 auctions the other day, down to 220 right now. And they are still getting $50. People really want Wood. Why did so many get out? Duel and History of B + B didn't leak out like this.

I finally got tired of losing out on auctions and bought an ebay Buy It Now copy for $60 which included priority mail with delivery confirmation & insurance. Nobody in town has it and I agree with some that it may not come out for a LONG time (knowing Disney). Plus if it comes out with anything missing I'd be upset about that. Hated to spend that much on one dvd but I think it'll be worth it.

Ed Wood is still out there.

I saw 2 copies of Ed Wood at the Sam Goody store in the Killeen (Texas) Mall for $29.99. That seems to be the place to go from what I read.

Is it possible for someone who hasn't been able to find the DVD in their town, to call and order it via credit card and have it shipped out?

Just a thought, I never tried.

It was so close to release. if they recalled it BEFORE distributors shipped it to stores then you would have seen a recap of 2002 where only a very few leaked out to the masses. in this case, a lot of stores have shitty managers who don't pay attention to memo's and notes and for one reason or another ignored the recall. that's why so many are loose.
