Well, he didn't say that he wanted a DVD insert, which is the only thing that would make sense if you were going to call those who prefered to have inserts "Deanies."

I can't believe the amount of people on the DVD Talk forums who not only don't care about insert booklets, but have such IRE for those that like to read notes and essays about a film. Thankfully the Criterion Collection still produces some of the best inserts in the business, and they put a lot of thought and effort into them. I hope they don't read these forums and think "Why bother?" in a cost-cutting move in the future.

Look, if you don't like inserts and a disc comes with one you can always throw it away. But if you do like them and a disc *doesn't* come with one, what are you to do? Make your own? The studios have access to artwork and talent that we don't. It would be difficult for me to interview the director and cast of a film for the purpose of writing an insert.

Why all the thread-crapping from the "I only want the movie I don't care how it's packaged" people whenever a packaging question comes up?

If you don't care about an issue (like most will claim to) then just shut the f**k up and move on.

I remember when I got this on VHS for Xmas back in 1992. The back of the box said Admiral Kirk. Then around June 1993 it was finally available for sale at retail stores and the box was corrected to say Captain Kirk. January 1999 comes around and I pick up the DVD which one again incorrectly states Admiral Kirk once again.

Well, looks like the white case isn't standard with this movie. I picked mine up at Walmart in Laguna Niguel yesterday and mine has a black case. No insert tho.

No, the white case is "standard." Companies will sometimes make special editions just for Walmart. Or they could have run out of the white case.

So that's really no indicator.

My answer to that one if that I have yet to find a dvd booklet or insert that contains something that is not actually present on the DVD itself. Granted there may be some, but they are rare.

If it is a simple paper insert with chapter listings on, I don't see the point because you have scene access on the actual DVD menu.

But if it is an actual booklet containing information, in the majority of cases that information is usually present in the making of stuff and documentaries on the DVD, so it's usually repetition.

One example I can think of is the Pixar booklets for Monsters inc and Finding Nemo - they give detailed instructions on where all the special features are - like you cannot fine them through the menu anyway. Pointless.

So rather than insisting that you are missing something when you don't get an insert or a booklet, you are usually missing nothing at all.

In fact, you are being fed the mistaken belief that you are getting something extra, when in fact it's usually just repetition of what is already contained on the disk - no matter how pretty it looks and how colourful they are.

Black case & no insert at BB today as well. That excelscior upside down thing on disc two is definately weird.

I got a black case(they were all black cases) with no insert at a local Wal-Mart for $12.83(great price by the way) + tax. The upside down disc image on disc 2 is just plain sloppiness. Is this just a screw up at the replicating plant or poor quality control at Paramount? Even though it is minor, there is no excuse for such an obvious mistake in my opinion.

Black case at Wal-Mart today ($14.56). Cannot say if there is an insert or not as it is still sealed.

I always find it easier to scan an insert and realize that I want Chapter 12, than to go to the main menu, go to the chapter menu, skip through 3-4 screens of full motion to get to Chapter 12, etc.

Maybe it's just because I was bottle-fed on laserdiscs, but I have never felt that chapter searching was very elegant on DVD menus. It always takes 10x longer than I expect it to. Especially with some of these movies that have 40-50 chapters and only put a few of 'em per screen (ala Attack of the Clones).


That's the main reason I'm sorry to see inserts going the way of the dodo. Although some of the ones with essays and info (Criterion, some MGM, some Image) are really cool too.

I think there's a difference between a booklet and an insert.

Booklets, with an original essay and other information about the film, I like. For instance, the booklet for RASHOMON is superb (it includes the original Japanese short story and a ton of other stuff). There are numerous other examples.

Otoh, inserts - slips of paper with the chapter listing (maybe) and no other info - I couldn't care less about. For me, there's no value-add to that proposition.

And if I've heard correctly, it's not even the Excelsior, it's an image of an upside down Enterprise-B. Whoops, wrong movie!

There were a few changes that I noticed... the mind meld was one which I liked. Another was one shot of Kirk on the bridge at the end before the mind meld which is now a close up and not a wide shot. The only other thing that looked new was the out door shots of Rhue Pente. I t seemed PURPLE now and no longer white... i remember it being white and it looked different this time. Anyone else agree? I no longer have my original dvd so I cant compare it.

I didn't realize they were changing things around for these DVDs, did they do it for the others (I know TMP and Wrath of Khan were director's cuts).

thats right....I've been doing it for 3 years. I found that booklets that come with a dvd, are great. I love them. fact is...most of the time the insert is nothing more than a waste of paper, with chap stops and some crappy artwork. please, if thats all the insert were gonna get, leave me out...and leave the space empty. I make simple, yet informative booklets myself. it's not hard when you have a computer. I give myself any amount of info and tidbits I could ever want, including a few write-ups, various facts and even a few pics. no it's not perfect...but it's for me, not anyone else...and I'm far from perfect. custom made to fit my needs. I'll guess and say I've done this with maybe 600 dvds. personalizes my library even more.

I do agree that Paramount did make a mistake with Disc 2, but hey, in 20 years, it might be a collector's item.

End for those who are still complaining about the insert problem, do what I did.

Anyway, I notice that in the TheDigitalBits review, that the new DVD has 15 chapters, the same as in the first DVD. So I decieded, to take my old insert and put it in the new one. And voilà, I've got an insert......

Well, if you happen to be a Trek geek [like myself], you hung onto the first version since according to some posts above, there are slight changes in the new version.

Thirteen has an insert. You could buy that and put the Thirteen insert inside the Star Trek VI case.

White case, upside down picture on side two and no insert. Have the old copy, so I grabbed that insert. Case solved.

I guess I'll get the old version through CH while I still can.
