I still think the best idea is the petition, like with Wonka.

RobCA 02-08-04 11:19 AM

Here's another look at the box art.

I would have bought it if they'd released all seven films in widescreen, but now, I probably won't bother to buy any of them. It's not like I have to own them. YMMV

:) Rob

You realize, to do this, you would spend $50 at DDD for two less movies then the boxed set.

That makes sense.

If anything, one should buy the boxed set and sell the other two, so no pointless money is wasted.

Writing a letter works if you want to make yourself feel better. It is not like they are going to know what you bought on the individual base. People are going to buy it because it is a good deal, period.

For the Police Acadmey 4 & 5, a grassroots campaign is a little much.

I have already pre-ordered it, and looking forward to it. :p

Good call, purchase them as is, send the message that picture quality, and correct AOR's are not important.

CTUK 02-11-04 05:31 AM

Buy the box set - which is cheaper than buying the few you want, and send the fullscreen ones back to Warner, saying you are not interested in this kind of release.

Michael Allred 03-09-04 10:25 PM

Taken from yesterday's HTF/WB chat;

CloudVolpe> Apologies if this was asked already, but there are a large number of people who are swearing off the Police Academy boxset due to the lack of OAR. Can you please explain why movies 4 and 5 are being released fullscreen only while the rest of the set is widescreen? Can we expect widescreen transfers down the road?

<warnerbros> We did not have widescreen transfers available to make this release of #4 and #5. They will be Open-Matte.
I'm sorry but I don't find this acceptable. Why couldn't they simply create new widescreen transfers for #'s 4 & 5? It's not as if they don't have all the proper elements to do so, the "PA" films never went through ownership changes with bits missing here and there over the years, they've *always* been Warner films. The first 3 (all older obviously) will be widescreen....

Is this simply a case where Warner just didn't want to invest in creating new WS transfers?

I still will NOT be buying the box set.

Rivero 03-10-04 02:45 AM

I simply can not believe there are actually people out there complaining about not being able to get a widescreen version of Police Academy: Mission to Moscow....and serious about it.

SFranke 03-10-04 07:36 AM

Mission to Moscow is the 7th film. The complaint is against #s 4 and 5.

OAR is OAR. I want to see a movie the way it was meant to be, I don't care whether it is Mission To Moscow or Shindler's List. Where does one draw the line on which movies it is okay to release in Pan/Scan an d which ones are unacceptable?

Bolt 03-10-04 09:57 AM

I don't know why, but I'd probably pick it up...

digitalfreaknyc 03-10-04 01:22 PM

Not picking it up. Not a chance. I'll get the first 3. I would be buying the whole set...and I'm almost tempted to write to WB. I think this is disgusting and pointless. But unfortunately, we're in the minority.

From what they said, it's not that they lost the prints. It just said that they didn't have a transfer. Obviously they didn't feel like they needed to spring for a transfer to be done. It makes me wonder why there were widescreen transfers of the others though. The first one was the only film released in widescreen on any format ever!

SFranke 03-10-04 02:17 PM

I'm getting this box set. The pricing is a great deal (7 movies for $60 is more than fair). Had they invested in making widescreen transfers for 4 & 5, I don't know that the price would be so attractive. When I feel the need to watch the films in their proper AR, I can always cut some construction paper to cover the image(the static electric charge should hold it to the screen). I've never seen the films in widescreen, and, since they are open matte, I don't think I'm going to miss much.

Dirt-Boy 03-10-04 02:17 PM

Here's an idea. Buy the whole box set, save the extra dollars, and send the two full screen discs back to Warner. Viva la Resistance!

Kevin M. Dean 03-10-04 02:50 PM

$43.19 at DDD

Yeah, that was my reaction at the chat (if it isn't obvious from my nick, I'm the one who asked the question :) ). I don't know a huge amount about film transfers, but shouldn't they just be able to slap a matte on it without too much effort? Is it really that time-consuming and costly when the original open matte element is already there?

GuessWho 03-10-04 03:30 PM

for the original:

The film is presented in a "matted" widescreen format preserving the aspect ration of its original theatrical exhibition
Matted?

NOT anamorphic???????

jmj713 03-10-04 04:42 PM

They will be enhanced for 16:9 teelevisions. "Matted" doesn't have anything to do with that.

Even better message: as long as it's cheap, I'll buy it. Quality doesn't matter.

bigjim25 03-27-04 01:25 PM

Any B&M deals yet on box?
I know it's still almost 2 weeks away but sometimes catalog titles get put out early.

db27 03-27-04 03:56 PM

also curious on pricing for this set.

eXcentris 03-27-04 10:50 PM

Amazon.ca had this mispriced at $13.99 CDN. :)

glassdragon 03-28-04 06:13 AM

hmmm down the page they mention There's something more about mary coming out. Hasn't that been out for almost a year now?

oh well...must've been fixed.

Good thing, too. That would've sent a bad message if you had bought it.

LasVegasMichael 03-29-04 11:52 AM

For those that pre-ordered this apparently controversial set from DDD, it hit the CCs today!

With the release a little more then a week away, this is slightly encouraging. Perhaps this will be one of the few times that DDD comes though pre-orders arrive on the street date!

We shall see!

Michael Allred 03-30-04 01:44 PM

www.dvdfile.com's review for the entire set is now up;

Not very promising....
