Doesn't load.

digitalfreaknyc 04-12-04 04:54 PM

Picked up 1 2 and 3 today from Tower. Some good prices...just kinda sad that I couldn't pick up the boxed set. *sigh* Oh well...other bigger and better DVD's to buy. Thanx to WB for savin' me some cash.

LasVegasMichael 04-12-04 05:00 PM

Got my boxed set a few days ago from DDD (turned out to be $6.17 per film).

Overall, I am fairly impressed with the purchase. The commentary on one as well as the little featurettes on the rest were pretty impressive considering the low BO of the final sequals.

Despite overwhelming public opinion, personally, I like Mission to Moscow better then 4-6, but that is just me. ;)

QuiGonJosh 04-12-04 06:53 PM

Picked it up today with some store credit and watched the doc. on the first movie...nice...this is a decent collection...and I still have absolutely no idea why I picked this up...but hey...twas free! :D

LasVegasMichael 04-12-04 07:04 PM

The doc on the first (and continuing through the rest) was a nice extra. Too bad that David Graf (Tackleberry) passed away (long before his time) in 2001, as he was many viewers favorite (including myself), and I would have liked to hear more insight from his POV.

"Tackleberry, we REALLY need to talk"

R.I.P. Tackleberry

His character will be missed. :johnwoo:

Well, I just noticed that the Region 1 DVD set is a bargain compared to the UK Region 2 set. Not sure if there are any different specs, but the RRP is £69.99 - that's $125 of your American Dollars!!!!!!! -eek-

GuessWho 04-13-04 11:10 AM

Shouldn't the thread title be updated? Newbies are gonna think they still have to wait 2 months for this.

scott shelton 04-13-04 11:26 AM

I built my "box set" from Half.com.

Got it for around $35... Some good deals on there for those who wants to skip certain sequels.

jmj713 04-13-04 12:05 PM

Scott, you could've had the entire series plus the (addmittedly lame) outer box for 2 bucks more from Amazon with STL...

QuiGonJosh 04-13-04 12:08 PM

yup...just doesnt make sense to spend $35-$45 for 3-4 of them when you could just spend $5-$10 more and get all 7...and you can argue that their not great movies...but they sure make me laugh...and thats all I ask from these flicks...

digitalfreaknyc 04-13-04 01:03 PM

Again...I spent $35 to get the 3 I wanted. It's better than spending the money on 2 movies that will be fullscreen. Sorry but I just can't support that. There are too many other movies I'd rather spend my time on. Even if they released this NON-anamorphic and in widescreen I would have bought them. But they didn't. So to WB...sorry. It's a matter of principle. Not money.

You're implying I wanted the entire series.

And I got my copies a week before release. Amazon doesn't work like that.

I'm happy.

jmj713 04-13-04 02:28 PM

Why would you want only some of the films? Where does the quality drop? I'm going through the boxset now and they all have had a consistent level of goofiness. There is now talk of a reunion film, and I'll gladly get that as soon as it's out on DVD. This is one of those collections that for $37 makes perfect sense. Sure 2 of them are not OAR but at least they're not pan-and-scan. I guess it depends whether you're a completist or not. I couldn't physically own Police Academy partially knowing there are several more films available. That's why most of us want full season sets of TV shows as opposed to best-of discs.

I understand what you are saying, as I, too, would have purchased nothing short of the bargain box set, but earlier in this thread you can see that it got pretty heated over parts 4 and 5 being Fullscreen. I took what I could get, but many disagreed.

I am very happy with the full set, but that is just me.

Bring on Police Academy 8: Mission to Mars! -wink-

The quality drops when they started making these films for children - around part 4.

Basically, when Steve Guttenberg left (Part 4 was his last), it became much more slapstick, true, but still stupidly funny.

Besides, lest we forget Callahan (Leslie Easterbrook) in all 7 films except part 2!

Robertwoj 04-13-04 04:51 PM

Are parts 4 & 5 "Open-Matte" or "Pan and Scan?" These are two very different types of presentation.

Open-Matte expands the top and bottom of a widescreen matte to show you more of what was filmed (i.e., MORE than the OAR).

Pan and Scan is a selective view of the OAR release (i.e. LESS than the OAR).

So... exactly which presentation format do 4 and 5 come in?

LasVegasMichael 04-13-04 05:17 PM

All it says on the boxes is: Standard Version This film has been modified as follows from its original version: it has been formatted to fit your screen.

Is there a way to tell? No ther specs are listed on the DVD or the box.

QuiGonJosh 04-13-04 05:28 PM

Its Open Matte...

jmj713 04-13-04 06:16 PM

Yes it is open-matte, as I've said above (okay I didn't say "open-matte", I said "at least they're not pan-and-scan") and this was confirmed by WB at their latest chat over at HTF.

demonio 04-13-04 10:16 PM

what people fail to realize is this will undoubtedly be the only dvd release for these movies, and we should be happy we got them all in a box set for a good price.

Thanks WB!!

Ummm yah. Good job at NOT finding widescreen versions of two of the movies and thus...losing a lot of sales.

For the curious, the collection leads my current column. Included a little something extra for fans of Ms. Easterbrook.
