I love movies, always have and don't see that changing. I never know what mood that I'll be in, so having a wide variety of movies that I love at hand is the only way to go. I never collected VHS tapes the way that I collect DVDs, but DVDs were priced to be collected, it's the ideal medium for me.

I collect DVD's because I love watching movies and I love the DVD format. The transfer, the sound, the extras; it's all great. I think it's better to have a good sized collection then have to go to the video store or whatever when you want to see a movie. Plus I love the TV DVD's. My goal is to have all the episodes of my favorite shows on DVD. And even if there is a new format, I'll still be able to watch my DVD's.

Dito.
I also like being able to see where my money goes. It's also a nice size. Can you imagine collecting records (which I used to do but sold them when CDs came out), they were so heavy and got scratched too easy.

I don't have to imagine, I still have about 400 (would have 800, but got a bunch stolen). A lot of the records I have STILL aren't available on CD after all these years.

plus I love movies, and find making of stuff fasinating. Buying dvds have sparked an even greater desire in me to go to film school and become a director.

speaking of film schools I just got into Brooks Institute of Photogrpahy film school just last month

OFF TOPIC (sorry)

Hey I have a buddy who's a junior there! Great school

The 20 reasons why *I* collect DVDs:

1) it's cheaper than going to the theatres (thanks to CH)
2) i can watch it whenever i want...even on a whim.
3) i don't have to deal with people on cell phones, kids running up and down the isles, people playing games on their cell phones, and various other distractions.
4) i don't have to worry about when the movie is due back. heck, i still have two unused BBV rental cards with 10 movie rentals on each.
5) i enjoy collecting stuff
6) is legal (unlike DIVX and what not)
7) easy to entertain guests
8) i can watch it as loud as i want
9) OAR.
10) no commercials on tv shows
11) i can watch multiple episodes in a row
12) better quality than tv (at least for me, since i don't have a hdtv, or digital cable)
13) movies help remove me from reality
14) they have the freeze-frame feature
15) you can also zoom in (well, my current player doesn't support it tho)
16) multi-angle
17) extras (audio commentary, deleted scenes, production info, background info, etc.)
18) it uses up less bandwith than the former otter scavenger hunt
19) it justifies my posting here
20) it gives me something to claim on my homeowner's insurance in the event of theft/fire.

I only buy the ones that I consider 5 stars ( a few 4 stars ). Those movies I can watch over and over and never get tired of them. Once on a while I might buy a movie that is not really a must have and I usually give that one away.
Netflix takes care of my DVD needs for a reasonable price and their service, speed, and selection simply rocks. I have not been at the local BB in so long I am starting to forget the nightmares....
