Everyone I know is at least one, if not two orders of magnitude behind me in collection size. I lend them out, so I've also been given the -buster appellation too.

I rarely buy new, usually used at the rental stores or the used dvd store, so a lot of my purchases are spontaneous - I rarely go shopping for a specific title (for those rare occasions I buy new at the cheapest place online, or b&m if it is insanely cheap). So I always keep a recent printout from dvdprofiler with me to make sure I don't double-purchase a movie (because if it looked good 6 months ago, it will probably look good today, but I won't remember buying it 6 months ago). Inevitably someone will make a comment about how smart it is that I have a list of movies that I want to buy and then they look at me real funny when I say, no its a list of movies that I don't want to buy...

I have about 650 dvds and don't know anyone who has more than me (like everyone else said, this board excluded)... I am a numbers whore though... I will buy some dvds if the price is right and never get around to watching them, but just like knowing that IF i wanted to watch them, they would be there (not like supreme bargin bin crap though...)... anyhow, I'm glad I have lots of movies, since it give me lots of choice... most of my friends have less than 50... my closest competition is a friend of mine who has just reached about 150-200 mark...

I would have more myself, but I sepnt $6000 on a HT setup (55" HDTV, Denon, SVS Sub, Axiom Speakers, etc), so I'm stuck at a modest 570 or so.

No. I just graduated from college this spring, and have about 385 dvds; I got a lot of shocked looks when fellow students would enter my living room.

My parents have like 10, mostly cheapies. That is after I gave them my old dvd player 6 months ago. Even friends who call themselves dvd geeks only have 15 or so.

As to the hardware question, I have a 27" Sanyo, my parents have a 35", and my girlfriend's parents have a 53" RPTV. Really, I was stuck with a 19 inch for so long, any of them are great to me. My biggest need right now if shelving for the dvds.

I look forward to a projector or LCD/TVish setup, even though it will be quite a while. I just can't stand the angle required to watch RPTVs; I like to crash on the floor to watch movies sometimes, or lay out on couches.

In real life, no. Some guys I know will usually brag and show off their 20 big collection, then they get shocked when they hear the size of mine (for some reason my gender makes it even more shocking, which is weird)

Most people are impressed and ask for recommendations instead of calling me crazy, which is nice

I'm sitting at just under 400 while most of the people I know have maybe 50. One of my friends is asking me why I buy so many and making fun of me for it. Then in the same sentence he'll ask to borrow some from me.

Same as most: IRL, no (I have 350 or so). I'd probably have a lot more if I wasn't so picky about which actors I like, and if I hadn't sold all the ones I found that I didn't care for, or had to replace due to new (but only if better in transfer and/or audio) editions coming out. For me, Best Buy has become a religious shrine that I pilgrimage to every Tueday.

No. Not counting the people on this website and stores, I have more then anyone I know. Around 850 at this point. Back in '98 I wouldn't have thought I would have passed 500 but low and behold.

I do not know anyone with a bigger collection than me. The closest to me might be my brother at around 100. I had over 500 at one point, but I've sold off a ton of my old titles. Now I have 425 including individual titles in boxed sets like the Bond and Kubrick sets. I am rapidly running out of room again so it might be time to sell off some of my dvd's again.

I have pretty much stopped collectiong. Unless a really interesting older title comes out or a new movie I really like, I don't buy anymore. I have started weeding out my collection, I have probably sold about 20 discs out of my 200 or so collection and I feel that it will go down more from there.

No, I have more than anyone I know.

The funny thing is I just started collecting in March 2003. I got a DVD player and 3 DVDs for a birthday present. I now have about 225 DVDs in six short months.

Welcome to my addiction.

My friends all think I am insane and I only have around 280 or so give or take depending on how you count box sets.....they wouldn't believe the numbers I am seeing here......

They also think I am nust because I have well over 1000 cds, but I know a guy who easily has 3000, he's my idol.

That is just ridiculous. I remember a big, fat guy coming into the Best Buy I worked out every Tuesday, buying the new movies, all greasy, wearing a moo-moo pretty much. It was a disturbing sight.

I'm 20 and I've got a little over 500 hundred discs including about 50 Criterions in my apartment here at college. Noone I know comes close where I am. I don't hold a candle to many of you guys here though, some of your collections are awe inspiring.

I talked to one Circuit City employee once who said had over 600 but when I was there he was buying 20 of the 5 dollar cheapo discs and had never heard of Criterion and said he doesn't buy any movies made before 1989..... I'm sorry but geez his collection must be one heck of a pile of crap. No movies made before 1989????

But when people are discussing collections or talking about renting a dvd here at college I chime in with that they are free to borrow and watch any of mine and 9 times out 10 whoever it is just rolls their eyes after they ask which ones I have and I say that there is no way I can name them all and that they need to come and say. The exception comes and acts like I'm god or something.... It sorta sucks that most don't believe me though. When I'd be at lunch with people and somehow DVD collections would creep in a couple times one of them would bring up how one of the others has so many dvd's that he even has them alphabetized on his desk! How many did he have? 50. I used to ask which ones he had and then when he asked which ones I had I would respond with the answer above but when met with rolling eyes of people thinking I'm a liar stopped with that....

I've got the PT50LC13 Panasonic 50 inch widescreen LCD Rear Projection set in my apartment as well and people I tell to come over from across campus and watch movies don't believe me because they think I have always been lying about my dvd's. Haha, well I guess it leaves more room for me and my 3 roommates!

I don't know anyone that's even close, but I don't usually talk to people in person about my DVDs as I get tired of explaining why I have so many. At least here, my sickness is not as unusual. The problem is when anyone comes to visit and goes into the basement where they are lining the walls (I'm almost to 1900).

I've got over

10,000 comic books
400 CD's
300 LP's
80 DVD's (just started last November).

This isn't even counting all my board/card/minature games

If you think storing DVD's is a problem, try storing 10,000 comic books.

Webster's has my photo under the entry for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

My co-worker has about 10 more DVD's than me and we are now formally engaged in an arms race. Our other co-workers think we are nuts but enjoy borrowing from our collections. It saves them rental fees. lol.

I know of an independent video store with a collection of DVDs that makes even me jealous. I own nearly 4,000 DVDs. Naro Expanded Video in Norfolk, VA has over 12,000 DVDs for rent. Great store. Plus, they have lots of VHS tapes.

DonnachaOne, I'm with you on how shocked people are when I tell them I get mine for free or almost nothing. Not that I have over a hundred dvds, but since I started this past spring, I've really climbed fast and far.......

First, aren't you afraid of them getting stolen at your apartment? I'm deathly afraid, and I live in my parent's house! Second, I'm sorry, but I hate people like that Circuit City employee. It's like this kid I know, but keep away from, who says any music beyond the last decade is old. But the Beatles, for example, are classic. All he can say is, "what happened to you?" Hello!?!

Finally, I have maybe 80-100 dvds, or less. I'm not sure. I don't count everytime I get a new dvd, plus, it's hard to do so, cause what if they're in a box set, or in one case with multiple movies. It's the little things that put me off..... Plus, is this really a race?

Anyway, to answer the question, I know of one friend, who already had a long head start on me, but maybe now I'm up to 70-80% on him....
