People are usually shocked when they see how many movies I have, so I don't know any one with a larger collection. Now taht I am going back to school I will be slowing down my purchasing.

i have over 1400 dvds which is about 1000 more than everyone i know combined. they would rather just spend a couple hundred dollars on booze instead. in their eyes acting stupid(because of being drunk) is better.

Most of the people I know think I'm already a nut so telling them how many DVDs I have doesn't really phase them.
No one that I know has more DVDs than I do, but my collection pales in comparison to many of those here.
Some of my friends have a couple hundred or so, but most of them have around 10-30. And yes, I let my friends borrow DVDs. How else can I have a dialog with them about a movie if we don't have a frame of reference?

Yup. One of my best friends has ~ 400 titles, but 1/2 of them are crap...
Myself, I currently have ~ 200 keepers and a stack of 8 or so at all times that I haven't watched yet. Of course, I've also dumped ~ 75 to 100 on eBay or traded them at a local CD store (for music) over the years... I don't buy a TON of DVDs but I do buy blind a lot and tend to get rid of those that I don't care for or that hold little to no replay value. CH is really useful in that department, I'm on membership #18.
Other than my one buddy, I know no one (outside of DVD Talk) that has the bug... When I have guests over they tend to spend a fair amount of time browsing the collection.

My best friend has about what I do, right around 100. However, I've been hovering at around 100, making myself offload a bunch when I picked up some more, while my friend is buying them in bulk.
I wish I knew you guys in real life, so I could not feel ashamed when I people see them all.. To you guys, I woudl feel like I need some charity dvds.
Anybody else contemplated hiding some of theirs when people come over? I do, just so I dont have to hear, wow you got a lot of movies.. ha

Hey, a quick follow up on this topic... How many in this thread have HDTVs? That's another thing that I own that very few people I know also have... It's also the BIG reason that my collection numbers ~ 200, instead of ~ 600. I'm a gear first guy, software is secondary. It's always interesting to me to see the folks here with huge collections that don't own a 16X9 tele...

I currently have 900+ dvd's and I don't know anyone even close. The only one close is a friend of mine from New Jersey and he has just over 200. Haven't come across too many people here in New Mexico with big dvd collections, sadly, quite a few with big VHS collections though.

Very few of my family and friends have real collections; heck, some are still on VHS!
So, outside of this forum, no. Of course around here, my collection pales in comparison to most, but I'm on such a limited budget it's hard to keep up! That's why I love CH though, has saved me a bundle. I also don't have an HDTV, still stuck with my trusty 4x3 analog. I can't complain though, I still get tons of enjoyment from the collection, but oh would I love to see them on an RPTV.

I only have 70 because I trade off the ones I don't think I'll watch again to get ones I haven't seen. I've got a core of about 30 "untradeable" titles.
My brother's collection on the other hand, has just about reached infinity. When I want to trade with him he looks at me like I'm crazy. He refuses to give up anything he owns. A true collector.
On the other hand, I've got a projector (and a house, 2 cars, kids and a dog) and he doesn't.
Come to think of it, I've also got a mortgage, a car payment, college funds and vet/kennel bills. Maybe he's on to something.

It seems like most everyone here is in the same boat as me...
I have about 150 DVDs, and that's at least three times more than anyone I know personally. Then of course there's the fact that most people who come to my house have never even heard of most of the movies I own. I tell 'em the same thing - I can rent Die Hard anywhere I go, but if I want to see something like The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant I better own a copy.
Funny thing is, I play music with a guy that's got a huge collection of vinyl - lots more than me, and I've got about 1,000 records. One time I told him that I watch on average three movies a week. He couldn't believe that there were that many movies to see. Here's a person that has an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of pop music, is aware of tons of obscure bands, and it wouldn't even dawn on him that there are movies out there worth watching that didn't make it to the local cineplex. Some people get caught up in their own thing and never gain any sense of perspective. Odd.

I'm 31 and I have a little over 500. I have a friend who has around 400 and another friend who has around 300. None of my other close firends (around 50 households) have more than 10.

When prices get to the point that I'm comfortable, I can drop a 16x9 HDTV right into my existing setup. But I can't easily drop 1500 DVDs into my theater.
Personally, I've been focusing on grabbing titles for the past 5 years or so (LD/DVD). My sound system has been upgraded during that time, but my monitor is merely adequate. Give me time...

that is right on with my thinking. I've been saving for the right monitor for a while now with titles/films being the priority. my sound system is complete and my WS will arrive in a few months. I feel much more satisfied knowing my collection, for the most part, is already here. re-discovering the library will be even more fun because of this.

I only have about 300 which is a lot more than anyone I know in real life but isn't really that much. I would have a lot more if I didn't spend my money on booze and what not.
To people saying, "I have 400 but don't go out / stay at home" -- get out a little bit and booze it up. You can do both.
It's OK.
Really.
