I began buying December of 2000 and I currently have about 250. No one I know has more. One of my best friends has about 30. Former roommate had one. Current roommate has four. Most of the other people I know either have none (and just rent) or max out at maybe 25. Now that I think about it, one guy at work has about 220, but from talking briefly with him it sounds like the majority of his collection is filled with the oeuvre of Seann William Scott or Paul Walker. I could be wrong.

I think there's a cutoff point at amazement/awe, and I think it's about 75 DVDs. After that, I think people can't process the information and just write you off.

Quick funny story before I'm done. Last Thanksgiving an uncle of mine half-mocked me for owning at the time something like 150 DVDs. Why? He was convinced DVDs weren't going to take off. This was NOVEMBER 2002.

Oddly enough, I just counted this afternoon and I have 405 DVDs, give or take a few. This is WAY more than most of my friends, except for one who is a film director and has close to the same number I have.

But most of my friends just see my collection and ask why I don't spend my money on something more worthwhile. Then I just tell them that someday I will spend my money on something more worthwhile...a home theater!

Oh, bro, you don't have a home theater? Come on, now. You can a decent Kenwood for the cost of maybe 15 or so of those dvds. What's wrong with you? They change everything.

No, I have at least 10x any of my friends - it's always a party conversation topic...I think some people are trying to determine if I'm sane or not.

What's funny is back in '98/'99 (I can't remember now ), I remember a friend had over 50 DVDs, we just had about 12 and I was immediately motivated to get to that point. It was some sort of weird competition. And I was the movie snob in the group. . Then I discovered this site and the rest is history.

Even if there's never another deal, I really feel that this site will always be the ultimate site....it started so many collections.

I'm the king of the hill amongst my fellow DVD collectors with over 200 DVDs. And proud of almost every single one of them...

i can't imagine upgrading to a 16x9 tv. I don't want to watch tv shows/full screen oar movies cropped, since if you don't you distroy the tv with burn in, it would also look pretty bad watching a non anamorphic dvd stretched as well. When and if a mandate comes for everyone to upgrade to hdtvs, I'll prob. just get a 4x3 tv thats hdtv compatable. Plus, I like the black bars.

Solution = Dedicated home theater room with a 16X9 for anamorphic DVDs + a nice player that can scale non-anamorphic DVDs, full blown surround - not a HTIB, etc... For the cost of 1/2 of the collections here at DVDTalk, this is easily achieved.

Couple of points here Rypro... When the mandate comes for all programming to go hig def, your 4X3 screen will be the incorrect ratio for all programming. Most 16X9s do a decent job with stretching 4X3 material, but I agree with you there... I don't watch anything 4X3 on my 16X9... Hence, the dedicated home theater room. 4X3 shows and the little bit of tele that I do watch go to the rec room on the 36" tube.

But, apparently I'm nuts since the responses to my earlier post were - mostly with several exceptions - along the lines of "buy 1,500 DVDs now and a HDTV in 10 years". < Smiley dammit!

My collection is a lean 400. My cousin has over 800. I look at his all the time and see nothing I feel I am missing! At most there might be 50 titles out I would like to have that I don't.

I currently have 780 (I use Readerware to keep track of what I have) and nobody even comes close. When I tell people what have I get one of two reactions, either they can't understand why I possibly have or need to have that many discs, or they want to know when they can check out my collection so they can see what they want to borrow.
