Too be honest, I think I WAS too old for this movie. I'm 38, but I really feel much younger. I buy music geared towards a younger crowd and one of my all time fave movies is "Babe". I even married a girl 13 years younger (he he). But "Spirited Away" bored me to tears.
Why? Well, first of all I'm not into animation much. I do like some things with intricate CGI, but not typical animation. This movie didn't really stand out much in that dept. The story really was a rehashing of others. Whatever philosophical statement was made, to me, was just silly (freakin' River Spirits....ugh.)
I remember renting "Iron Giant" after reading some good reviews and I had the same feeling. I'm too old to enjoy this.
My wife loved "Spirited Away", but she also loves animation. I won't quit on animated movies, but this just didn't do it for me.
Time to go drink my prune juice! You know, I believe one other reason I wasn't into it is because of the video games I've played. I played "Alice" for example and the thrill of being able to control your player in a more interesting environment appeals to me much more. I felt like "Spirited Away" was like a video game where there was no control or very interesting graphics. I'm not totally slagging the movie. There WERE some nice scenes and a few funny little characters.

Adults are enjoying cartoons more than kids these days.
I am 26 and I think "Spirited Away" is one of the best animated movies I've ever seen.
