Indy is being "fixed" for DVD!?!?

from this site

Many Indiana Jones fans have been elated to hear that the Indy franchise will soon be arriving on DVD. And while not much has been known about the project so far, we've got some sources on the inside that are starting to spill some details.

Industrial Light and Magic are working on the Indy DVD Trilogy right now. Hard to believe, isn't it? Hopefully, it will be worth the wait. Here's what I do know - apparently ILM is having to conduct a major restoration of the original print. There's quite a bit of digital film cleanup they're conducting as well.

No, there's not new scenes added (and the guy with the sword doesn't shoot first, thank goodness), but they are removing certain errors and weak elements from the picture. Expect wiring, equipment and reflections to be removed digitally - anything that distracted or looked weak in the final release may be evaluated again. Basically they've come up with a list of what gets fixed. When you see the DVD, hopefully the only thing you'll see is a beautiful movie with great sound, not lots of little annoyances that Steve and George want out

hopefuly matte lines during the mine scene in Temple will be gone, those made it look fake.

Short Round will now be played by Pat Morita.

Fine, but...

No snake reflection in Raiders = a good thing.

Visual/Technical cleanups, a la removing matte lines (one of the positive aspects of the Star Wars Special Editions) = a good thing.

Altering the content, INCLUDING the film's title = not so good.

The film was, and is, Raiders of the Lost Ark. Inserting Indiana Jones' name to maintain uniformity makes as much sense as renaming A Shot in the Dark to A Shot of the Pink Panther in the Dark.

I think that's a logical argument.

BOMM,

I don't either, but I'm sure there is an audience against this move.

No big deal about the title. After all, Star Wars wasn't Episode IV until 1980.

Removing matte lines? That's cool.

Errors, like a boom dropping? Ditto.

The reflection of the snake? Well, that had a nostaligic charm, like we knew how they did it, but I'd be receptive to it (and honestly, won't be noticing because the scene is too damn cool).

What I want to know is what their definition of a "weak element" is... aside from Short Round (the Jar Jar of the 80's )

No big deal about the title. After all, Star Wars wasn't Episode IV until 1980.
And now it's supposed to be referred to as A New Hope. One movie, three titles. Oh, there I go again...

They're not going to have the Gestapo agents carrying walkie-talkies, are they?

From: You have moved into a dark place. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
I hope they can clean it up and fix the stupid mistakes that detracted without altering the intent of the film.

They are changing the title to "Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" which, now that it's a franchise, contributes to the serial-short film aspect of the series.

And alphabetically the films will now line up, albeit out of order (3-1-2).

So get 'em clean and bring 'em on!!!

I'm happy they're trying to make it look as good as ILM can get it. Now they just gotta figure out how they will release 'em

Isn't the title for raiders only being changed for the package design, a la the late VHS releases?

Man, if they change it in the film, I'd really be irked. May seem minor, but it just doesn't sit well with me.

I think only the package is being changed, so I've heard but who knows?

I hope they improve some of the blue screen work in both Temple and Crusade.

Nice... the snake reflection needs to be taken out, the Title sequence for Temple of Doom needs to be placed OVER Kate capshaw, not behind her, and they need to fix the part in Crusade when Indy Sr. shoots the tail of the plane and in the next shot its okay...

Personally, I'd prefer a restoration (digital or otherwise) of the original unaltered print. Once you open the door and say that some changes are permitted, then it just becomes a free-for-all.

Where do you draw the line? Inserting Jabba the Hut? Switching walkie-talkies for guns? removing unintentional content?

These changes, if they are accurately described, won't prevent me from buying 1 and 3, but I get this eerie feeling I'm being set up for the release of the original Star Wars trilogy.
