I have my whole day planned around this. broasted chicken and bourbon tomorrow at six. I’ve never seen this but I got high hopes.

Re: "The Severed Arm" Reviews/Discussion - 2021 Horror Challenge

Quick tip...most streaming channels have the 4:3 version with a poor print.

A clean print with the proper 1.85:1 aspect ratio is not the most watched version on Youtube so you may have to look extra for it but it is uploaded by a channel called Hollywood Classics. Also found the same clean print on another streaming app called "Ray Gun."

I thought this one was a bit of a snoozer. Great idea and set-up but quickly turns into a dull revenge flick with a twist at the end that is only mildly interesting. Nice touch of Saw at the end though...long before Saw and movies of its ilk were a thing.

My rating: ** out of *****

That was pretty much my exact response when I watched this for the challenge a few years ago. My review from then:
I liked the set-up, but this really dragged once we got to what should've been the most exciting parts of the movie (the stalking and murder scenes). **

^Holy shit! I promise I didn't read your review before I wrote that.

also meant to mention in my original post that I watched the movie on Ray Gun and had zero ads which was nice. Not sure if that YouTube one I mentioned had forced ads or not.

A very effective independent horror flick from the 1970s with a good story, good acting and solid production values with the exception of the cheesy special effects, which are comparable to HG Lewis films. An enjoyable watch, but then I am a sucker for revenge horror.

An arm for an arm for an arm for an arm for an arm for an arm.

The cave-in discussion reminded me of the Monty Python skit when they were stranded in a lifeboat and likewise starving -- “Ugh... with a gammy leg?

Re: "The Severed Arm" Reviews/Discussion - 2021 Horror Challenge

Eh, another one I didn't care for, but I think it mostly has to do with the time frame the movie was made in. With the exception of a few (Halloween, Exorcist, Jaws, Texas Chain Saw Massacre), films from the 70's always seem to bore me to no end. Films were much slower back then, the music is awful, and the hairstyles and wardrobe were so off-putting that it takes me out of the story. I know that sounds kind of ridiculous, but that's the way it is for me. Least favorite subset pick so far...

Interesting idea with terrible execution. The bad acting and direction just kill it.

The plot reminds me of this 70s tune:

I have to agree with Spiderbite and brainee. I liked the idea, but so much of it was a slog. I liked the "twist" at the end, but I also kind of expected for them to try something clever there. Still an interesting enough set up and story.

I liked it well enough. I think I benefited from the fact that I had to go eat at my parents' for lunch so had to stop partway through. I enjoyed the back half more coming back to it fresh. Always happy to make use of titles from my Vinegar Syndrome subscription.

Do you sell the releases you’re not interested in?
I’ve been considering a subscription lately, but I’ve never sold on eBay. Just wondering how I’d recoup my money from titles not in my wheelhouse.

I enjoyed this one. The premise was unique and reminded me of a campfire story (the hook hand!). Yes, the effects were laughable, and the production cheap. But I liked the story, so it kept me engaged.

I really dug the soundtrack. Overall I enjoyed this. It was kind of slow, but it held my interest. One weird thing for me was that the tubby bastard with the glasses had a bit part in my favorite movie Midnight Madness.

Funny, but the soundtrack was my LEAST favorite part of the movie; it sounded like someone gave two toddlers some Casio keyboards and recorded what happened next. There was one cue that sounded all the world like a woodpecker going to town on a telephone pole.

Put me in the "didn't like" column, as the film committed the cardinal sin of film-making: it was boring.

And I knew that Deborah Walley was top-billed, so I kept waiting for her to show up...until I realized about halfway through that the daughter of the guy whose arm was cut off in the cave WAS Deborah Walley. I was used to seeing her looking like this (as she did in the '60s), so I wasn't expecting her to look like she did in this film.

My subset film rankings so far:

1. Slither
2. Silent Madness
3. Road Games
4. The Severed Arm

I have to disagree with the majority here... I really liked this film. Maybe it was actually watching the crappy Plex version that made it so moody. LOL. The soundtrack was definitely "experimental" and ill suited for the film but I still enjoyed the film none-the-less.

I did like this one, namely because I've spent so much on the yearly subscriptions, that I feel I have to. My bar is set very low. My wife was ridiculing this one from the start, and she didn't let up the whole night. On paper this must have looked like some horror masterpiece, but it got lost along the way to the market. We'll make daddy better by forcing his friend to cut off his own arm.

That door frame flexed quite a bit at the end when he tried to grab them through it. Recon a few hits could bust him out. Probably more of a flub than a an intentioned detail though.

I enjoyed the grisly setup and cool premise but after a while the arm reaching out from a darkness just off screen but got a little old. I enjoyed Severed Arm much more than I expected even if it wasn’t consistent.

In the camp where the great premise didn’t deliver. Fun to see a pre-Angus Angus though.

Stealing rbrown’s subset ranking idea:

Road Games, 7/10
Slither, 7/10
Silent Madness, 5/10
The Severed Arm, 4/10
