The Door in the Floor never got the respect it should have had. Perhaps Jeff Bridges' best onscreen performance and a terrific turn by Kim Basinger, too.

I'd have to recommend Old Boy also, real good movie, definitely look into it if you haven't seen it.

The small movies that the video rental store only has one copy of are sometimes a pleasent supprise. I think I get more enjoyment out watching an unknown that turns out to be a wonderful movie than watching a blockbuster that does not meet it's hype. I call them "one copy wonders".

Please keep this thread going because it is the kind of movies I search for when I rent. My contribution is not a purist or critics delight but just a great action movie that deserves a look if you like those kind of movies. Look for "The Nest". It is a small jewel that will put most large budget bangers to shame. Look hard, they will only have one copy.

Also just watched "Memories of Murder" a very interesting and gritty Korean mystery that portrays the frustrations of a local police force in dealing with a serial killer. It was a refreshing look at this time worn situation. 16x9 widescreen, english dubbed (but dubbed very well). Again, they only had one copy.

This is an absolutely awesome thread.

I know have The Return, Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself, and Undertow on my mental list of buys. The Nest might be another one of the price is right.

My recommendations (some a bit dated, some not "unknown"):

Fat Girl
Kung Fu Hustle
The Machinist
Spartan

Definitely older DVD releases:
You Can Count On Me
Wonder Boys

I'd also like to add:

La Haine
City of God
Better Luck Tomorrow
Blood, Guts, Bullets, and Octane

If your a fan of Emmy nominated actor Hugh Laurie from the Fox networks Emmy nominated show "House" than be sure to catch him in an interesting little movie called "Girl From Rio"

Another "one copy only" rental I saw recently. This one is border line so rent it before you buy it. I sure enjoyed it but maybe it was because I like Hugh Laurie as an actor.

its still a good movie, but the trailer is basically the entire movie in 2 minutes.
This is exactly the reason why I do not like to watch theatrical trailers because, they show too many scenes, and reveal too much of the story. It's like you practically already seen the entire movie just from watching the trailer within itself.

Hmm, a bit of a weird movie, but Forbidden Zone is a bit unknown I guess, good review from DVdtalk. HUdsucker Proxy is another one, fun take on Capra and It Happened One Night / Sabrina, sorta.

Not completely unknown, but is a very small film and one of my favorites:

"A Simple Plan" directed by Sam Raimi.

Dallas 362 - directed by Scott Caan is worth checking out, it's a tad flawed, but Shawn Hatosey's portrayel of Rusty is another of his roles that really deserves to be seen and displays a great acting range from this underappreciated actor.

Bang Bang You're Dead - I dont know how many people know of this movie but it was a great movie imo. A movie kind of simulating the columbine shooting type of situation.

Open Hearts (not available in R1, but a powerful, emotionally-wrenching earlier film by Susanne Biers of "Brothers (Brodre)"
All Things Fair (Swedish coming-of-age film)
And Now. . .Ladies and Gentlemen. . . (Beautiful Claude Lelouch film)
The Barbarian Invasions (Won Best Foreign Language Academy Award in 2004. Sequel to "Decline of the American Empire", but stands on its own.)
The Man from Elysian Fields (Don't hear much mention of this, but I thoroughly enjoyed it -- and Mick Jagger's performance)
Moon Child (Fun --and sad-- Japanese vampire/action film starring 2 pop singers)
Maelström (Best film ever narrated by a fish)

Yes, on ALL counts!! Though I don't see Mr.Jagger as the ultimate gigolo...but then again I am not a female.

Lelouch's film is beautiful....mixed with the Kaas soundtrack...makes me wanna head to Marocco asap.

Ciao,

I think this should be bumped up to give everyone some ideas for the DDD sale. I'm going to post the link to this thread in the DDD thread.

I'm going to buy:

-Me & You & Everyone We Know
-The Return
-Schultze Gets the Blues
