Dude,

Most of the films you mentioned were known here in US. In fact some of it came out in region 1 DVD format and in theatres.

I enjoyed this one as well.

I don't know if it's really unknown, but I found Alien Hunter with James Spader pretty interesting.

I know this one is pretty well known to many people who really follow film, but what the heck:

I bought this blind the other day, watched it, and it just blew me away. It's a movie that you'll either love or hate (depending on your taste and mood I'm sure), but I loved it.

I watched Terence Davies' The Neon Bible (based on John Kennedy Toole's book) last night:

Thought it was really exceptional, though probably not to everyone's liking. There's a tranquil, methodical vibe running here, but with an more unusual style... almost Malick by way of von Trier's Dogville. The majority of the film seems to intentionally(?) display virtually all of it's sets as just that: false backdrops, as if it were shot on a stage, but this really works well, since Davies' camera simply glides along almost exclusively in perfect horizontal and vertical pans, stopping dead center on the characters. Combined with mild touches that make the Southern setting appear otherworldly, it's a genuinely hypnotic movie.

The DVD itself isn't worth writing home about: the transfer is fuzzy and a bit washed-out, but it is in the OAR of 2.35:1, despite what the box says. No extras, either, but I'm salivating at the thought of seeing his other work now. Unfortunately, Distant Voices/Still Lives and The Long Day Closes don't appear to be on DVD in either R1 or R2, so I may have to wait a while.

I'll save you the trouble, here's what you'll miss: google image search

Seriously, I'd rather watch a marathon of Newlyweds on MTV than that movie again.
Based on the 'glowing reviews', I thought I was the only one who felt the way you did. What a terrible flick. I only watched it for Oldman, and it was a waste of my time.

Ugh. Just can't understand the praise, especially for a flick starring James 'Cardboard Cutouts Have More Acting Talent Than Me' Marsden.

Great thread and definitely needs some more suggestions. I'll have to look through my movie list and my voting list at IMDB to see if there is anythign I can recommend that has been mentioned previously.

Here's my late response after rediscovering this thread due to the bump. I thought it was refreshing unique and a lot of fun in a quirky way. I'm glad I purchased and will undoubtedly watch it again. Very enjoyable and different. (And, yes, Amy Jo Johnson is a fox, and I wish her character had reappeared later, but...)

The movies I own that most people have generally not heard of are:

The Beast
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094716/

The Bunker (Anthony Hopkins as Hitler, heh)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082114/

The Dish
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0205873/

Late Night Shopping
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0250491/

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100519/

Five very different little movies that nobody or their mother have seen, apparently.

Jesus, You Know

Almost the entire movie is made up of people confessing to the camera, in a completely un-self-aware manner; think the opposite of the confessionals in "The Real World", to give an obtuse comparison. The film, to me, isn't so much about religion as it is about religion's interaction with individuals through prayer. It has some of the most heartbreaking dialogue I've ever witnessed on screen. I generally stay away from very slow "idea" movies, but this one hooked me.

This thread has helped me out a great deal, and I hope that it's useful to many others as well. I wish I could go back and take out the word "recent" in the title though. Maybe I'll get a mod to do that for me.

I'll second Tully - it's a nice little film that I've seen on IFC or Sundance Channel a few times. The performances are very naturalistic. Tons of great films in this thread - it's been helping me fill my Blockbuster Online queue.

A few that haven't been mentioned:

Nobody Knows
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0408664/

Keane
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0420291/

Winter Passing
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0380817/

Igby Goes Down
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0280760/

Dig!
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0388888/

L'Enfant
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0456396/

With a Friend Like Harry
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0216800/

Stone Reader
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0324080/

A Midnight Clear
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102443/

Cache
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387898/

Saint Ralph
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384488/

Shattered Glass
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0323944/

All the Real Girls
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0299458/

George Washington
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0262432/

All are fairly recent, somewhat unknown (in wider American circles, I should say) films that I've enjoyed and haven't been mentioned yet. Enjoy, and keep the other recommendations coming.

cheers,

-the Jesus

Don't Come Knocking
Everything Put Together
God Has a Rap Sheet
In America
In My Father's Den
Jesus' Son
King, The
Live Free or Die
Lower City
Mean Creek
Paradise Now
Prozac Nation
Reconstruction
SLC Punk!
11'9"01 (Select Segments)
Sex and Lucia

i wouldn't know if these movies can be qualified as "unknowns", but i am sure they are not recent. i find myself drawn to older movies. anyway, i just happened to chance on dvds of these movies (and being a shrink, i enjoy them a lot): bliss and scorchers. the latter has james earl jones, faye dunaway, denholm elliott and a few more other people. they didn't have hidef on this one, but i enjoyed it very much ^_^
