What a shame with the Shield Complete series problem...I really wanted to purchase this set as I missed out on a few seasons after I dropped cable.

I was wondering why recent orders I did through bing with deepdiscount didn't work. That might explain it.
I heard "The Giant Claw" in the Sam Katzman set is cropped in a fake widescreen. I'm guessing the other movies aren't. I was debating about getting some of these Icons sets.

"Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection" is excellent (review on DVDtalk by Glenn Erickson). If you're a fan of the early Godzilla films it's a no-brainer, especially at this price. I picked it up a while back just for the remastered "Mothra" and was pleasantly surprised by the other 2 films. The only drawback is the packaging. 3 disks on a single spindle.
"Icons of Horror: Hammer Films" is lots of fun and a good value. I picked this one up primarily for "The Gorgon" and "The Curse Of The Mummy's Tomb" and was not disappointed. It's also has a Glen Erickson review here on DVDTalk.
I'm leaning towards the Katzman package which has a good review here as well (Glenn Erickson again). He doesn't indicate any issues with "fake WS" and says (in part): "All of the shows except Creature with the Atom Brain are presented in beautiful enhanced 1:85 transfers. Why Atom Brain should be excepted makes no sense at all, since it's clearly meant to be matted as well."
There's also a review for the "Icons of Adventure" set. This one is by Stuart Galbraith IV.

Ordered the shield and now I'm really worried but they are on backorder. DDD sent me a coupon for $5 off my next purchase I'm tempted by the seinfeld complete series for 94.99 after coupon is this a good buy.

It's been that price before but that's about the lowest its been. It will probably go lower if your in no hurry to buy. The more important question is why did you get the coupon. Is it a generic or unique one time use one?

I think it's unique they said it was for my first order with them, I know I did in the past but it's been awhile I guess. If I don't end up ordering from them by the weekend I'll give the code away as I doubt I'll use it. Just have to decide thats a good buy for seinfeld although I think it will come to blu Ray someday....

I called Sony today about The Shield complete collection and they emailed me a Fed-Ex return invoice. So tomorrow I'm going to drop my set off and have it shipped for free and they will send me a replacement set. They guaranteed that my replacement set will be better than this old set and that the discs will be in mint condition and they will also have protective sleeves in each pocket.

Just got my copy of The Shield. Sure enough, it was from the old batch. Some of the discs were scratched up, some of them have bits of glue stuck on them...repeated insertions/removals cause more scratches...sigh...
Looks like a call to Sony for me as well...

For those that grew up watching Harryhausen films, he truly was gifted at his craft and they are typically viewed in the same light today as back then. I have them all on DVD (not BR but the B/W and colorized combo sets) and would never part with them.
Now in my experience the majority of folks that I know of seeing them for the first time were not as impressed. The truth is the stories, sets, and acting are all on the low side. It is the Harryhausen magic that brings it all to life. In some cases, filming was wrapped of in a matter of a few weeks with Harryhausen taking sometimes a year to put it all together.
So unless you have an interest in older sci fi and fantasy films and can view them with the perspective of what they accomplished at the time they were produced, I would take a pass or try to rent one first and not do a blind buy. But if you have a general interest in the genre and have enjoyed other stop motion type effects (original King Kong, Mighty Joe Young) then you might want to go for it.

Re: DD - Up to 64% off Sony Box Sets
fyi - i had some problems with my order that I thought I would share.
After getting tired of using credit cards, I now use paypal (against my checking account). Only do this with a few vendors that I trust - Deep D is one of those.
As it turns out, paypal only authorizes the withdrawal for 5-7 days. so if something takes longer to ship - or (in my case) something moves to back order, paypal will reject the request for funds.
So.. i order 4 "Icons of" box sets, and noticed on my order history that 'icons of adventure" was cancelled (assuming it went out of stock). Wanting to make sure I got the sales price, I immediately put in another order against my CC.
I then picked up my mail, and got a box with "Icons of adventure" in it!!
tried to cancel my new order and couldn't. called customer support who told me it wasn't Icons of ADVENTURE that was canceled - it was Icons of HORROR!! (even though my order history clearly said that the ADVENTURE canceled and the horror set was ready to ship.
net: the CSR canceled my order for icons of adventure, I put in a new order for Icons of Horror, and I was charged appropriately.
But was surprised that my order history status was wrong and how paypal works with products that move to backlog.
Thought I would share.

I realize this was a directed reply, but I thought I would go ahead and share a perspective anyway in case it may be of value.

I didn't grow up watching Harryhausen, I think Clash of the Titans, his last movie, came out before I was even born, I just appreciate the spirit of creative film making in any form, so I love the innovation & imagination behind these movies. There is just something so pure about them that you don't see in films today. If you can appreciate that, then for this price its worth a blind buy. Have you seen the original King Kong? If you love that then you will likely love these movies. Plus you could probably ebay the set & get your money back if you don't like them.

I saw that Sony has a set replacement program so I will be calling them on Monday. It seems that they will either replace all of the discs with good ones (which will go into a dvd case) or they will straight out replace the set with something in place to protect the dvds (which I prefer). I'll post what happens after I call them.
