Re: Warner Archive sales
Paul Mavis was raving about Night Watch- which is another riff on the Sorry, Wrong Number plot. His review (Highly Recommended) is here
Beware, it contains spoilers.
Haven't seen NW, but SWN was a great noir/crime/thriller.
Cry Terror is supposed to be solid too.
Just remembered The World, The Flesh, And The Devil- a very interesting post apocalyptic drama. It's is now, thankfully, extremely dated in terms of it's 'racial' sensibilities (which still probably made it seem quite progressive at the time). But if you can appreciate it in the context of the era in which it was made, it's an extremely well done end of the world type movie. Highly recommended.

Regarding cult/horror/sci-fi requests, I was just about to ask about Crescendo. The description made it sound like an interesting, atmospheric occultic 70's mood piece. Then I watched their sample video clip... horrible, horrible loungey jazz. So much for atmosphere.
So I'll word my question this way: do any of these Archive titles exude a Lovecraftian atmosphere or concepts?
Are any of these movies even as good or atmospheric as your average Thriller episode?

I'd say Two On A Guillotine is close in vibe to an average Thriller ep.
Actually, probably better than the average.
As far as Lovecraftian- maybe Eye Of The Devil. I didn't find it a complete success, but it did conjure up a creepy and malevolent vibe, was well cast, and gets bonus points by going for an atypical ending for it's era (though more commonplace now) which makes it interesting in retrospect.
A very enthusiastic second or third for the Tarzan film. Greatest Adventure and Tarzan The Magnificent are sensational Saturday matinee-type adventures, and the best Tarzan movies I've ever seen by quite a distance. They hold up extremely well 50+ years on.
Only seen bits and pieces of Dark Of The Sun, but it looks like a blast. I picked it up on overwhelmingly good word of mouth and am looking forward to the right time to spin it.

Deadpan, EYE OF THE DEVIL should be right up your alley. I mean, David Niven as a devil worshiper? It's very strange stuff given its cast and production pedigree. Sharon Tate never looked more stunning.
But for out and out atmosphere, you can't beat BLACK MOON, which I recommended earlier. This has to be one of the eeriest films I've ever seen. It does not have a Lovecraft vibe, but it is sweating in atmosphere.
Paul, totally agree on the two TARZAN pictures, without a doubt the best Tarzan films ever made and dealing with adult themes and situations regarding violence and inherent bestial nature. Beautiful stuff.
As for DARK OF THE SUN, I envy you seeing it for the first time. It's amazing!

Re: Warner Archive sales
when I logged in under my WB Rewards account, 2 of the titles in my cart disappeared and the other three went to the usual 10% off discount. I figured the automatic Rewards discounts were overriding the sale discount.
I dumped my cache and logged back in under a second account, that isn't a Rewards one. No problems getting the sale prices on that account.

Thanks, ProfessorEcho & Paul SD. I can't afford these right now, but I looked into these films you recommended & definitely have them bookmarked. Maybe if I'm lucky they'll show up on TCM sometime.

I wish they'd do this deal in another part of the year. There's just too many deals now to spend money on what I consider a lukewarm deal. Besides I can only think of a couple of movies I really want (I'm sure there are more). Maybe a 2/$20, but I'll be patient.

Re: Warner Archive sales
They ran this deal back in April, I know this because that was the last time I put in an order with them.

Don't think I ever recall any 2/20 sales. The 3/$35 was about as close as it gets.
Future Man- great choices! You're definitely scrapping some of the cream off the Archive barrel.
I just watched Kongo for the first time last night. It's a remake of West Of Zanzibar, a Lon Chaney Sr. film, which I've never seen. Didn't know anything about the premise going in other than it featured a pre-code Lupe Velez in tropical setting. Holy S#%*T! That movie was one twisted, diabolical pre-code hoot. Loved it.

[QUOTE=Drake;11018647]The Window, The Outfit and Stranger are all EXCELLENT ....especially The Window! I was really surprised by that one.
"The Window" was re-made, -or "re-imagined", I suppose, -into the 1984 film "Cloak & Dagger" with Dabney Coleman and Henry Thomas.

You also see quite a bit of Virginia Bruce's bosoms as her shirt isn't buttoned very well...

Re: Warner Archive sales
I was also going to mention KONGO, which is per the remarks above, as horrifyingly wallowed in human degradation and depridation as any film ever made. A very powerful picture that has lost none of its impact all these years.
The reason why I didn't recommend it as a buy is because TCM shows it pretty regularly whereas the other films that were endorsed are a bit more rare. Also, unless you have TCM HD, the anamorphic widescreen titles from the Archive are the only way to properly see them so those should go to the head of the class when considering purchases.

Black Moon is not included in the sale, sadly. Next time perhaps.
I ordered:
The Legend of Lylah Clare
You're a Big Boy Now (Francis Ford Coppola)
The Window
Two On A Guillotine
The Venetian Affair (I really liked this film) Robert Vaughn and Elke Sommer (looking really fine)

Re: Warner Archive sales
Just placed my order:
The Legend of Lylah Clare
The Carey Treatment (medical thriller with James Coburn directed by Blake Edwards based on an early Michael Crichton novel; a forgotten gem)
The Traveling Executioner
The Breaking Point (better version of To Have and Have Not than the Bogart one, albeit without the Bogey/Bacall romance)
The Rack
Toward the Unknown
Mister Buddwing
Hysteria
2 Weeks in Another Town
Julie
A number of others being mentioned here like Dark of the Sun I have already picked up.
