Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Just this past week the campustown Blockbuster Video (on Main Street) in Peoria, IL started its closing sale. On Monday I went in and picked up "4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days" and "Reprise" (both older titles) and I got a discount that made each of them $6.50 each. Then I went back two days later and they were no longer offering this discount on older titles. Everything was $9.99, from the new releases to the older titles. That ticked me off. I walked out the door with "Session 9" and "Paranoid Park," although the same worker claimed ignorance when I said she sold them to me 33% cheaper two days ago. She said everything was $9.99, save for the discs with no cases. Be on the lookout for things like this, although it's probably more a result of workers who don't exactly know what they should be charging. I guess I should be thankful I got lucky once, since people were walking out the door with armfuls of titles that you could get cheaper virtually any place else.

Seeing the same thing in OKC at Penn and Memorial store. Stopped in there today. This is a small store and it is absolutely jam-freakin'-packed with human beings grabbing up everything at 10% off. I. Was. Stunned. Used blu-rays (several of which have been 9.99 new in the past month) being snatched up at 15.29. Used DVDs in CD cases for 4.99-9.99. Unbelievable. Just shook my head and walked out.

Blockbuster in Orlando (Williamsburg area) is closing - have not been in there and don't think I will go. Been at least a year since going in there anyway.

The store in Norman across from Norman High School is going out of business also. The Used DVD's in CD cases were $3.99 I think, but most of the used stock was $5.99 with some being less. The new Blu Ray DVDs were still a rip off.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

just picked up four movies yesterday from a local Blockbuster. The shelves were filled with movies for sale and there were also DVD's sold without covers. Some posters were being sold. Those little movie cards were being sold four for a dollar.
Most movies were sold for $9.99. To me that's expensive to pay that much, considering I buy on Amazon most of the time for less. Anyhow I still got a few things for that price: Twilight, The Quiet, and Penelope (new).
They told me they aren't sure when they're closing. If prices go down more maybe I'll be inclined to go back and buy more.

Heard the BB on the Berlin Turpike in CT is closing. Haven't gone to check it myself, I assume most of the prices are similar to what's been mentioned in the thread so far.

Picked up a three movie pack of Ernest Goes to Jail, Ernest Saves Christmas and Ernest Scared Stupid brand new for 9 dollars. The rest of the deals weren't even worth it.

Carrollton, TX store at Hebron and Josey is closing. I picked up some previously viewed discs for $4, but everything else is $9 for used, 10% off new, and no-art discs for $6. They said that the store will remain open until January.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

I'm assuming the people buying the $9.99 and $14.99 movies don't know about the 4 for $20 and 3 for $20 prices. I forgot what it's called but when people see sales signs, people think they are getting a deal even when they are not. I wish there was a way to educate these people. If everyone refused to pay the prices they have during the liquidation, they would be forced to lower the prices sooner.

One closing in Hyde Park, Cincinnati, OH, near the railroad tracks on Wasson. I stopped in this morning and they're doing $8.99 sales on all new releases with $5.99 for no-art DVDs.

The guys in there didn't know when the prices would go down.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

What I found interesting is that one BBV is closing with the almost all-out-of-inventory $5.99 and $8.99, while a BBV nearby which seems very much alive is still having their 3/$20 and 4/$20 and they can't seem to get rid of stuff.

go figure.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

ps. went back to my BBV (why do I torture myself) to see if they have any REAL sales.

I was surprised to see all the $9.99 on sale for $7.99? I asked the manager if that wasn't just for the $14.99 ones.. he said no, ALL PVDs are now $7.99- the previously $14.99 ones as well as the $9.99 ones.

I just looked at him and stared. He got real quiet and said "I know. these were cheaper a few weeks ago. But here's the thing. Back then we weren't selling many of those.. now they are flying off the shelves! Go figure".

I looked at him again.. He looked at me. we just both smiled realizing the absurdity of the situation.

How tender.

btw,
BBVs closing in Miami-Dade County, FL include:
U.S. 1, just south of the Best Buy in Pinecrest
Sunset Dr. and Galloway Road
Lejuene Rd and N 62 St (Hialeah)
Coral Way and 72 Ave (Westchester)
Already mentioned: Coral Way and Douglas Rd. (they told me the last day of the sale is Nov. 15, when prices will really hit rock bottom)

Prices are like $8.99 in some stores to as low as $2.5 in others. It's a real YMMV thing, especially with what happened to me:

I bought several titles in some locations-- carefully researched for value, save for a few goofs where I paid too much for some titles. But this was made up for when I bought a Star Wars Clone Wars animated Vol. 2 DVD: they actually gave me money with the barcode sheet scan for the price adjustment. Same happened with the My Architect DVD a few days ago and a Fantasia DVD. In the end, things even out, and I think I got some bargains. I even found a brand new sealed Last of the Dogmen for less than $3!

The real deals are there if you know how to look. Yes, there are fools who gravitate to "Store Closing" signs like moths to a flame, but it's a simple mind game. This your last chance to check out what is in the store, so you go in and buy more than you need to. I think it makes sense to me. The trick is to overcome that and know what you are buying,

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Stopped into the St. Clair Shores store and the prices were as lousy as advertised here and the store had the most people I've EVER seen in it. People paying thru jewel-cased DVDs selling for $6 or $7. Ridiculous. I picked up a couple of $4 titles, but yeesh.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

It seems some store-closing Blockbusters are getting shipments of used DVDs that aren't selling as fast at regular Blockbusters, so they are shipping them to these closing stores to sell them where the real foot traffic is. I went to the one in Hialeah on my way home from work today, and they told me they had just received a shipment of 3,000 units.

Yes, they are trying to pawn off the non-moving junk at regular stores for customers looking to snatch up remaining stock at a store that is about to close. But, for my interest, more rare out of print titles, that often show up on those $3.99 shelves. So, again, it pays to be an informed customer.

But one thing I am kicking myself over not getting at these closing stores is a Blu-ray player. At this Hialeah store, some guy picked up the last, brand new sealed Sylvania NB501SL9 1080p Blu-Ray Disc Player in the store for $90. I haven't seriously begun hunting for the ideal blu-ray player (I'm looking for one that plays blu-rays from all regions, if there is one-- like I said, I don't know jack about this technology, haven't started reasearching it). So, having said that, anyone know about this Blu-ray player and how good a deal this guy got?

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

I just got back from the mother of all Blockbuster deals.
On the shelf, I found a copy of Adventures of Antoine Doinel Criterion used.
Brought up to the counter......$7.87 sold. And they still had another one on the shelf. Retail I believe is at $100.

Really glad I walked in.
