I just looked at him and stared. He got real quiet and said "I know. these were cheaper a few weeks ago. But here's the thing. Back then we weren't selling many of those.. now they are flying off the shelves! Go figure".

I looked at him again.. He looked at me. we just both smiled realizing the absurdity of the situation.
Yes I think it is absurd as well as signs all over state 60% off but not the case. No wonder the company is going out of business, I will wait till the DVDs are under $5 to start my shopping.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

My store is still at $6 DVD's and is closing the beginning of January. I'm not sure if I should show my face anytime soon though. Tonight I was in Best Buy browsing Blu-rays and the local news interviewed me about buying vs renting. The story was about Blockbuster slowly going out of business due to low buying prices, Netflix, Redbox, etc.

If I may say so the company deserves to go out of business due to it's piss poor leadership. I worked for them from 2002-2004 in Dallas where the have their headquarters. After Viacom sold them off back to their original owners I knew they were in trouble. Then you learn they had a chance to bbuy Netflix but passed on them, while later copying their business model. After all Redbox has the most innovative model in the fact its a dollar a day and you can return it to any Redbox location. Double points, burn in Hell Blockbuster!

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

At the Long Beach, NY store, new DVDs now top off at $4.99 each (if it's stickered as less, then it's the sticker price). The no artwork discs in slimline jewelcases are $2.99. TV seasons are $9.99, which is a good deal, but some are shrinkwrapped sets from other stores and as such, you can't check them for scratches. Used games are 30% off and there are some good deals, especially since their regular used prices can be really good at times (for example, they had Street Fighter IV for PS3 for $10.49 after the discount). Electronics are 60% off since there's almost nothing left. They had a few floor models, some cables, and 2 Archos Gen 5 DVR Stations for $20 each. I got the last Archos 605 WiFi before Thanksgiving for $70. If you come across an Archos at a closing store, it'll be $40 and I recommend you get it (though for whatever reason, the capacity isn't listed on the box and Blockbusters have been known to stock both 4GB SSD units w/ SD card slots and 30GB HDD units; mine was 30GB).

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

The one on Clairemont Mesa Blvd (san diego) closes tomorrow - I was just in there and everything was $1.00 or less (blu ray's *WERENT* really on sale - 15% off the marked price ($16.99 or 2/$25)).

Picked up a ton of movies on the cheap. LOTS of newer releases (Observe & report, Last house on the left, Fired up, Max Payne, Transporter 3, Repo: The Genetic Opera) and classics (Jury Duty) with tons of copies of each. Ones in jewel cases (no DVD coverart) were half the price of those in covers. Found some good titles in there - Evening with Kevin Smith (2 disc) for $1.99 - 90%.

Blank cases are 5 for a buck. Videogame guides are $1.00 (picked up Tekken 6). sealed DVDs were 30% off (so not much of a bargain)

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

I worked one of these closing sales for Blockbuster back in Sept. The company that runs the closing is an outside company that comes in and does the signage and sets the prices. They didn't really drop the prices until the last week when everything was going for $1. I hated working then because the company (hilco) is ruthless and could give a rat's ass about anything other than money. I know that's how it is, but still.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

At the store here, game guides (and magazines) weren't discounted, presumably because the covers can be sent back for refunds.

Only the single DVDs early in the liquidation stood out as being close to inflated prices. The store is still pretty full of merchandise (though as I mentioned, some of the stock was moved in from other stores), and while there have generally been more customers than pre-liquidation, it was never crowded, and yesterday was pretty pathetic for the last weekend before Xmas (especially with the knowledge that the snowstorm would get worse and keep them out of a planned trip). Seeing the new shipments of stuff like TiVos that'll go to other stores if not sold is really weird...who's gonna buy a full priced TiVo from a closing Blockbuster?

Also, the big discount fun book thing sold at the counter has a "0% off" label, presumably because all other books are discounted and people are asking about it.

It's been stuck at 70% for two weeks now, how long it take to switch at some of yours?

70% for what? Here that's been the "up to" discount for weeks.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Today was the last day for two BB in my area of Miami-Dade. I was only able to make one in the late afternoon (Pinecrest, on U.S. 1) and it was slim pickins. I only got August and City of Lost Children (no cover art) for $1.04 each. The other one closing its doors for its last day is the Blockbuster in Hialeah. The others in the area are not closing until sometime in Jan., I am told.

The ones that are still open are:
Miami Gardens, just east of I-75 (I was at this one over the weekend, and they are pretty full, they even have Insignia Blu-Ray players for $104 after taxes. They had 4 on Sat.).
Davie, on University and Sterling Rd.
Westchester, on Coral Way and SW 87 Ave.
Kendall, on Sunset Drive and SW 87 Ave.

Went to my store yesterday and DVD's were still sitting at $5 each. Someone asked if they were closing because the company doing bad, and the guy said because the landlord raised the rent, and wouldn't fix the leaky roof.

Still $4.99 or more at the Plaistow store, and plenty of stuff I would buy if it were cheaper. Not biting yet.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

I'll say that I just found these for $3.99. Some of them I haven't seen though so who knows if they are good. Watchmen (seen), Two Lovers (seen), Religulous (seen), The Agronomist, Good Dick, Eldorado, The Window, Ben X, Everlasting Moments. Can't beat 3.99.

I'll go later in the week and see if they are down to 2.99. There isn't much there I still want but I'll probably keep an eye on it anyway.

I checked all of the discs and they are in like new condition. Shipping from an Amazon storefront is 2.98.

My store says 80% but I think they were changing it to a higher % when I was there because they changed it from 5$ to 4$ when I was there.

What I really want is to be there when they have dvd's in cases for something like 1.99. I would just buy indiscriminately and try to resell them to somewhere I know.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

I've yet to see a BB close around here. All the ones that were open when I moved here a few years ago are still chugging along.

A lot of Hollywood Videos have closed lately, though. The one by my house shut its doors a month ago.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

The BB in Anaheim Hills closed for good on Sunday. It was .99 for all PV titles. They still had tons of My Bloody Valentine, Last House on the Left, Vacancy 2, JCVD, etc.

The BB in Garden Grove on Harbor Blvd is closing on January 10th. They're currently at 70% off PV with the usual 30% off new DVDs and 10% off BD.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

One of the BBs announced they are closing in Gladstone, MO. All dvds are now more expensive than they were (when you consider 3/$20 and 4/$20). The manager flat out told me I'd get better deals at any other BB. The close date is early January. When can I expect prices to drop to something reasonable?

The Hollywood I managed closed down months ago. The BB I worked at is still running (at least when I drove by a few months ago) while the two other BB's shut down.

Well, if my local BBV is any indication - wait at least 3 weeks.. Then the prices get 'slashed' to what they were at 3/$20 and 4/$20. My BBV is at week 4 and they JUST went down to 3.99. If your BBV is closing early Jan then that is not a lot time...I still would wait at least 10 days....just my observation.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

Not a store closing, but I am so excited I had to mention it. For the first time EVER, a local Blockbuster decided to participate in the 5/$20 used DVD sale. I picked up pretty much every "award" movie from last year. 10 titles total.

Re: Blockbuster Store Closing Sale 2009

In New Jersey, the Livingston BB on the Eisenhower Parkway and the Nutley BB on Franklin Ave are pretty picked clean already (of used stuff anyway, the new stuff is about 30% off). I think they're closing the doors for good in 2 weeks.

Also, the Rt 202 store in Lincoln Park looks like it's been closed for a while already.

Someone should start a seperate thread for FYE's. I've noticed a bunch of them closing up in Jersey recently.
