Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

Has this happened at anyone else's Walmart? I went in today to buy some food and poke around in the DVD section, and I found that the DVDs which were formerly priced at $9 had all gone up to $10, and the $7.50 DVDs had gone up to $8. The $13 section was still $13, and the $5 section hadn't changed, either.

What's up with that?

On a related note, while there I picked up Season One of I LOVE LUCY for $13, and the Blu/DVD combo pack of SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS for $19.96.

It happened here at mine, too. I bought a $9 movie on January 3. Two weeks later, they went up to $10.

If you have a Target you may want to go there and look for "I Love Lucy" - they currently have a S1/S2 2-pack for $15 (on sale this week for $12). If they still have any you'll find it, along with other 2-packs, in the area where seasonal merchandise (Christmas/Halloween) is typically located.

Read BobO'Link's message if you have a Target in your area as the sale is good until 10 PM tonight CT but afterwards, it comes out to 15 for two seasons instead of one. Still not a bad deal.

Guys, thanks for the heads-up, but the nearest Target is a little over two hours away. Taking gas prices into account, I'll come out better buying the two seasons here.

I work at Wal Mart and when coupons are scanned at the register, the sales tax is automatically modified to reduce the tax to the after coupon price, especially when it comes to DVDs because those coupons ask the cashier if the item is taxable. That's really out of the norm if you were charged the before coupon tax.

I stopped in a WM tonight, and some of the Mill Creek PD sets are marked down to $2.50. These were not all in the right spots (some in 5 & 10 dollar spots!); it's best to have them checked before buying.

For an update on my issues at Walmart getting back what I paid on an item with a manufacturer's coupon, see the post here: http://forum.dvdtalk.com/blu-ray-bar...l#post10617874

It's also available online. The price is back up to $15 but with shipping and tax should be around $19 for both.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

^Nice catch. I didn't think about checking online as they are "limited time" offers and there is a store within 10 minutes of my house. Sure would be nice if Target did "site-to-store" like WM to save on shipping...

If I had a 2 hr one-way drive like rbrown498 I'd be happy with the WM price too!

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

I see this thread in the Bargains forum every day, yet I can never post bargains in it because it's been many MONTHS since WalMart had any kind of a bargain on any of the DVDs that I might want to buy. Their Black Friday was lame last year, their Christmas sales were lame, any DVD I might have wanted that they might have had at any kind of a decent price, I already own. Their selection is lame, their prices are lame, but I still go there once a week in hopes of finding ANYTHING. But no, it's the same old crap, week after week after week... -kd5-

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

The last thing I bought at Walmart were some Bewitched 2 packs @ $19.96 to fill in missing seasons from Target who rarely carries all the seasons of any series at the same time. In the last few months I probably bought a couple Disney new releases with coupon at Walmart (thankfully I don't plan to return them knowing that they would give me back less than what I paid for them because of the coupon nazis at all stores in my area). Other than that, I haven't bought squat since Black Friday, and yes Walmart has the same-old same-old until they go through a "reset" and send back a bunch of fairly recent stuff because it's "too old". Very rarely do I even look at most of their movie shelves (not that doing so thoroughly takes any more than 5-10 minutes) when I go there unless I'm forced to kill time while family is shopping. I think I've said it before and I'll say it again: Walmart sucks now when it comes to movies. For the last few years I've been using them for food and household supplies, and buying a movie from them is rarity. Amazon (and Target when there are coupons) is my main movie source.

So we should call this thread the Walmart no bargains complaint thread. :-)

I'd have to disagree on that point. WM BF was actually pretty good if you went. I bought around 20 BR's for 5.00 (and didn't even get all the ones I wanted). Actually all the BR's that Amazon had for 5.00 were because they were PM'ing WM. They also had at least one season of Rome for 12.00 -- along with some other TV seasons that were not usually that low (HawthoRNe, I think)

True their ads did not reflect everything they had on sale, but there was a bunch to get if you fought the crowds. The after-BF sales were practically non-existent though.

More recently (and if you read the post above), they have 2-packs of Bewitched seasons for 19.96 --- which is the lowest I've see so far for most of these seasons --- and some of the Mill Creek stuff for 2.50 is a pretty decent price for those sets. WM may not have had near as much as Target, but still pretty decent.

To he fair to Walmart, most B&M stores have been lackluster with DVDs lately.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

Did it actually have the full title on the cover? I've seen copies at Wal-Mart and Target that are just titled "Zack and Miri"- I always want to take a marker and write in the rest of the title! Ironically, Blockbuster doesn't have the censored title in their stores.

Allow me clarify what I said above, WalMart's Black Friday and Christmas sales on DVDs were lame for anything I might have wanted to buy. Also, since I don't buy BluRays, I guess I hadn't noticed any of the deals they might have had with them. My interest in TV on DVD is limited to mostly SciFi/Fantasy/Horror stuff, with the exception of NCIS (which hasn't been on any kind of a sale at any B&M store for less than $20), the only older TV shows I have any interest in are shows like War Of The Worlds/Invasion/Space: Above & Beyond/Firefly, etc., I have no interest in 99.9% of the stuff they've aired on TV recently (except Fringe). So from my perspective, WalMart just hasn't had any deals (no sales, no nothing) on anything I might want to buy, for a very long time. -kd5-

If that's because you don't own a Blu-Ray player, you can get cheap quality models for well under $100. Fry's has the Sony BDPS470 for $79.99 if you can find one in stock and live near one, and I've seen many others in the $60-$100 range. At least by owning a Blu-Ray player, you'll have more options open to you and there are lots of new release specials on Blu-Rays (sometimes as cheap as the DVDs). If not buying Blu-Ray is a personal choice, someday Blu-Ray will catch on more and you'll find the DVD selection even more diminished than it already it is at Walmart and you may have to switch. I can't think of any reason NOT to buy everything on Blu-Ray, especially for those items where the cost is no more than the DVD.

I agree that the Walmart BF DVD selection was pretty bad... most of what I got were a bunch of DC comic movies from Warner for $1.96, but I figure they are only $1 more than a rental so why not? However, I went there on BF for Blu-Rays and got quite a few, though it took me 1.5 hours to check out where on all previous occasions it only took me under 20 minutes, so I don't know if what I got was worth the time.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

And don't forget that one can buy a Blu-ray player and Blu-ray movies even if one doesn't yet have an HDTV. Just hook the Blu-ray player up to your current TV and then one can only buy the movie once on Blu-ray rather than potentially purchasing the same movie in the future once an HDTV is purchased.

There are threads in the DVD Talk and HD Talk forums where I've discussed the reasons why I don't own a BluRay player, most significantly my TV doesn't have HDMI, and is only capable of 1080i. But more than that, I'm perfectly happy with my DVDs...

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

I'm in exactly the same position. I still own just a CRT and am happy with the quality of ordinary DVDs. Both my DVD players (a Marantz and a Pioneer) are fairly new and good performers, so I'm not interested in replacing either at this time. I'll get a Blu Ray player when 1. the CRT dies and I get a flatscreen or 2. when releases I want are no longer available on DVD. I'm sure it'll happen some day.

By then the next new technology will be out and everyone will be clamoring to ditch their BluRays in favor of it... -kd5-

Just came from the WalMart SuperCenter next town over and.....nothing. No good deals on kd5-quality DVDs, no special sales, not even any good selections in the $5 bin... -kd5-
