I picked up the SK box this morning too.

Be aware that THE DARK HALF is Full-Screen, and MISERY is a WS/FS flipper.

So far, I've only actually seen a few cases of dented artwork. To be honest, no more than before, when the loose area under the disc tray itself could be punctured. In fact, I've got a few of those...and no damaged eco-case art.

Awesome! I am definitely on the lookout for this now that I'm aware of the possibility of it turning up.

I have to admit I was a bit surprised by the hatred for the eco cases around here...I have plenty of them and none have holes or dents or anything else.

Anything that ends up in the dump bin...well, I can hardly blame the cases when they are torn up from being piled on, sorted, tossed, etc. I've seen a few titles with slipcovers in dump bins, and the slips are beat to hell....nobody is on here complaining about how fragile slipcases are. The titles simply shouldn't be in dump bins.

I know we're off topic with his eco case thing, but I picked up the Star Wars films (for $10 each at WM) as a birthday gift for my 10 year old nephew, and I would have liked them to be more durable, but they're in ecos & I know he's gonna trash them, because he's a kid...

You're just not looking hard enough. Slipcovers are a whole 'nother breed of lovers and haters. Lovers freak out over damaged SC's, and the haters want everyone to know that they throw away theirs...to the chagrin of the lovers, who are desperate to find one in better shape than the one they own.

It's the ones that have the most that show the least regard for what they have. At ten, I'd already long been in the habit of taking immaculate care of what I had. I'm not that exceptional; it's just that I was told that if I ever wanted anything else, I had to demonstrate that I took care of my things. Your nephew's parents might feel that too excessive a philosophy to enforce, but there's no reason you can't dangle the threat of being cut off as motivation to get him to take a little more care of his things.

I totally agree with you, I've had no problems with Eco cases at all. Sure they feel a little flimsier but as long as you know how to handle a DVD case you should be fine. These companies are just trying to help the environment.

Also (and partially to try to get myself back on-topic here), it seems that the eco-cases are the new $5 bin/shelf standard. I can't think of any examples offhand, but I know I've seen at least a few titles where the copyright date on the insert has been updated along with the change to the eco-package. The $5 assortment is no longer just overstock remnants, it seems, but new stock of catalog titles.

Regardless of pro/cons of the eco cases, none of the companies using them are doing it for the environment that is just a little added bonus they can tag onto/ hide behind the fact that they are doing it to save money.

IMO i don't mind them much if I got the title for cheap which I usually do and the case is not damaged but even still if it is cheap enough I can overlook it just like a slashed UPC. Also if there is a slipcover that also makes up for it but that's because I am into the packaging and exclusive collecting just as much as I am movies. Not everyone is which is why most regular consumers could care less what the case looks like as long as the dvd plays.

I'm not saying I don't agree with you, but I also remember being a kid and being very upset when I had an accident & broke one of my posessions..

As far as the others stating its the content that counts, the same philosophy holds to those of us that like leatherbound books on our shelves as opposed to ratty paperbacks... You could say its the book that counts, but I like a nice copy on the shelf... There has been a market for leatherbound books for eons, obviously...

My last off-topic remark on the subject is to say, yes, you've got to have some allowance for the unexpected. But those instances do seem to decrease inverse to the amount of attention paid to diligence.

I entirely agree. If I'm just interested in reading a book, I'm content to check it out from the library or find a cheap, used copy. If it's something I really care for, I want a hardback (when available) in as pristine condition as possible. Which is really weird, because unlike movies that I might re-watch, I have just about never re-read a book.

I think that's what these $5, eco-case releases are, though. They're the movie equivalent of mass market paperbacks, and I think it's time that the bargain-hunters admit that if they really wanted a super-deluxe release, they'd have splurged in the first place when it was a $15-20 release with a non-eco case. They didn't buy the hardback, they waited for the paperback and then want to complain about how the flimsy cover becomes shelf-worn.

Back on topic, we found a Mannequin/Mannequin 2 double-feature at our local Walmart for $5.00 last night. It appears to just be the original two discs packaged together, because the first movie is a double-sided, WS/FS disc and the second is a single-sided WS only disc. I don't know that I ever saw them, but my wife simply had to have 'em.

Haha fair enough, (people looking for nicer slipcovers to replace their own did raise an eyebrow on my side, but knowing how particular people can be on here, I do believe you) I really mean to just point the blame towards those damn dump bins!

Excellent book analogy btw.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

Eco cases: I hate them. Its not about the environment, its about cheaper lighter packaging to save the studios money. I make sure to check all my eco case titles before I leave the store to make sure the artwork is not dented or the disc is not scratched. So far I have only found about 3 dented artworks and once when I got home noticed a disc was smudged from rubbing against the artwork. It wiped off so it wasn't a huge deal but to think that studios would package all their titles in cases that can easily damage the artowork or the disc is ridiculous. And that's my only beef with eco cases. If they didn't lead to easily damaged artwork/discs they would be ok. Whats next cardboard sleeves? (yea, remember that short lived trend?)

Slipcovers: I also hate them. Don't get me wrong though, every now and then you get a cool 3-D one, or one that lights up, or has moving parts, or just something fun and crazy. I'm ok with them, it's a gimmick, I get it. But I would have to say 95% of all my slipcovers in my collection are either exactly the same as the artwork or almost the same. Whats the point of that? If you remove the slipcover to only see the EXACT same artwork why have a slipcover at all? Makes no scene However... I would NEVER throw mine away. To me that would be like throwing away part of the DVD itself.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

My Walmart has rearranged their DVD aisles. The area that used to have TV Box Sets now has $5, $7.50, and higher priced sections. I asked a sales clerk what happened to the TV Box Sets and she said they were all sent back to the manufacturers. They only have a very small "New Release" TV section now.

The only TV shows were on side of the endcaps (like leftovers). Also they moved all the DVDs (except the $5 bin) out of the main aisles in front of the Elect. Section.

I couldn't even bring myself to search the "dump bin" for the Outsiders 2 disc because it is just too damn frustrating. There must be a site called howlongwillpeopledigthroughagiantbin.com and we are inadvertent stars.

My bargain find of the week at Wal-Mart was Season One of "A Different World." It's a 4-disc set for $5. Sweet!

Just found that today and picked it up. I've got 5 of the Centennial Collection discs now. Three of them I picked up for $4 and the other two for $7.50. Not bad. Just a damn shame they've stopped releasing movies in this collection.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

The ones here finished the reset... main differences are larger $5/$9/$13 sections, *smaller* selection of BR which was suprising, and a *slightly* larger selection of TVonDVD. Both still have the book case style dump bin and the $5/$9 wire racks.

They had the new improved package edition of "Babylon 5" - all seasons - $19.95/each.

I picked up "Star Trek: Enterprise" - S1 for $19.95.

A real life Truman Show. Someone's probably betting on some of us somewhere.

I was informed a couple of years ago that Walmart will regularly return media stock to the manufacturers so that they can then re-buy it at a lower price. Why they can't just lower the price and sort it out behind-the-scenes, I couldn't say, but it may be that Walmart intends to roll these back out soon with a lower price point.

Not a show I bothered to watch originally, but I've caught the Sci-Fi/SyFy Channel reruns and I've come to like it. As a Trekkie, I still think the series was unnecessary, but fanboy gripes aside I find it far more likable than I thought I would. Thanks for letting me know to look for this; a far better buy for the money than the Fan Collectives that appeared in the $15-20 range recently.

Was in a Wal-mart in Clinton, TN earlier this evening...they had a bunch more TV Box Sets at the 2/$19.96 price point. Various seasons of Bewitched, I Dream of Jeanie, Cheers, Mash, Night Court in addition to the titles I posted about previously.
