So *that's* what those pieces of crap are called... I've gotten a few of the "Midnight Movies" disks in those. They are truly awful!

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

What I do is go to the 99 Cent Only store and buy their dollar DVDs. Usually 'best of' something and replace the case. I refuse to deal with this nonsense.

I made an exchange over a scratched disc, last year, the clerk at custmer service poked through the case, those things are BS.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

I can only imagine how these eco cases are going to hold up when they get put into the dump bin.

I could see quite a bit of the discs themselves being scratched/damaged due to the design of these cases with little protection other than the paper artwork and the plastic sleeve.

It has already begun. The bin at my walmart is full of them and it's horrible because the cases are completely dented and ripped open they are not even worth the $5. I mentioned a title on the Big Lots thread and someone said it can be found in the Walmart bin and i did see it there but it was destroyed because it was in an eco case.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

Most of the crap in the dump bin isn't worth $5 regardless of what packaging it's in. Wal-Mart should have taken the cue from Big Lots long ago and reduced their dump bin price to $3.00 or less. The $4.00 Paramount and WB influx this past year notwithstanding, there hasn't been anything worth $5 in those bins for years.

I think that there's a move on the part of content providers (movie studios, record companies) to make their media more disposable, and "eco-friendly" is the excuse they're using.

Putting CDs in paper envelopes that are prone to loss and damage, "eco cases" that are prone to damage, flimsy digipaks, sleeves that will scratch up fragile discs... seems like there's an agenda at play here.

Wally World has all 7 seasons of 24 for $20 each, plus the tv movie for $10. Seasons 1-6 were in the slim{er} cases that Season 7 comes in, and they all include a mail in offer for a free CTU t shirt.

Eco cases reduce the cost of shipping DVDs, especially for private sellers. Up here, mailing a single eco-case costs slightly more than half the price of shipping a regular DVD case. About $1.18CDN vs. $2.06 CDN. Haven't mailed items from within the U.S. in a couple of years, but I'd imagine there are similar savings. For private sellers using Amazon Marketplace, this means a little more money from the transaction stays in your pocket after shipping/packaging is paid and Amazon takes their cut. For bigger companies like Wal-Mart, Amazon, Deep Discount, etc., shipping rates have almost certainly gone down, even on larger orders shipped in boxes based on weight. This may also be a factor in trucking discs to retail stores as well. I've never had a buyer complain about an eco-pak DVD arriving damaged. Ever. However, I do agree that these cases don't last long in the Wal-Mart dump bins, but I have no problem buying them from standard shelves and racks, or storing them in my home. Ultimately, I'm not sure the adoption of these cases was ever really about saving the environment so much as saving money through the postal/shipping services the world over.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

Question: both of my Walmarts are selling the Pretender in dual-season slimline packs. Are those discs still two-sided or are they single-sided?

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

My WM had the new $4 display right by the entrance.

I got the following.
My Cousin Vinny
Dr. Dolittle 2 (WS)

I almost bought Cape Fear (1991) but noticed it's not the Collector's Edition so I put it back.

I didn't see Dolittle 1 in the display.

I also saw Nutty Professor II: The Klumps - Uncensored Director's Cut

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

Came across the new $4 discs this morning. Snatched up The Simpsons Movie. I also got the last X-files movie. It's not one of my favorites, but I figured that I might as well complete the collection while it's cheap.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

Wife picked me up Rocky 1, Rocky 2, Rain Man, and Big Momma's House (Martin Lawrence to me is like Jerry Lewis to the French), all in the 4$ display.

She also picked up Master and Commander in (ewww) fullscreen. We have since had a discussion on why she will never do this again, with much eye rolling on her part. LOL.

Re: Wal-Mart Bargains Thread #2

I would've picked up "The Rocker" for $4, but the only copy they had, at least one disc was a floater.

I did find "The Bernie Mac Show" Season 1 for only $9, which is the cheapest I've ever seen it brand new. Now I just wish we could get the rest of the seasons on DVD.
