The Fly Ultimate continues to drop in price while The David Lean Centenary Collection has more than doubled. Sort of a crapshoot in considering when to buy stuff. Buy too early and you'll miss a price drop, wait and you could miss it.

Here in R1, this is called "Alfred Hitchcock: Masterpiece Collection" which is fetching $91.00 at DVD Planet and DD. The R1 collection includes a 15th documentary DVD.

An earlier poster commented that there are more differences than just the documentary DVD. Most notably, four of the DVDs are full screen instead of widescreen.

Has anyone used an AMEX Giftcard on Amazon.co.uk? I've got one I've been carrying around since December and I'd like to use it all at once and be done with it. It's only $25 but every time I try to use it, people look puzzled, as if I'm trying to pay with confederate money or something.

Also worth noting: Amazon.uk ships this particular set from their Jersey outlet, so there's no VAT reduction because their price already excludes VAT.

But in spite of the shortcomings - even with the four FF movies (Topaz, Torn Curtain, Marnie, and The Birds) - I'm still sorely tempted to jump on this. I'm already planning to get Jekyll, so it's only £0.99 more for p/p to add another title. £17.97, shipped, comes to a little more than $27. While I would clearly prefer to have OAR for all of the movies, this is a great start, especially considering that for three of the other 10 (Saboteur, Shadow of a Doubt, and Rope), 1.33 was OAR. Heck, even if you throw the four FFs away, < $3/movie, shipped, still seems an outstanding deal.

Are the Hitchcock FS films open-matte or are they pan and scanned? Open-matte doesn't bother me as much, but the pan and scan does (for obvious reasons). -Peter

Amazon doesn't let you apply credit card giftcards to purchases. HOWEVER:

1. buy an amazon.com gift certificate for $1 less than your credit card giftcard balance (if you use the full amount, the test charge will cause the actual charge to bounce and you'll get denied)
2. use the gift certificate number that Amazon emails you towards your actual order
3. you can use the remaining balance on another order if you wish

Really good price even with the difference from the R1 version. I checked my purchase history and I got the R1 version during DD's sale and a price mistake for $37.
