Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains
Just ordered the other night:
"Laurel & Hardy - The Collection (21-disc Box Set) [DVD] [1918]"
Stan Laurel; DVD; £30.42
"The Quatermass Collection - The Quatermass Experiment / Quatermass 2 / Quatermass And The Pit [DVD]"
Reginald Tate; DVD; £9.63
Prices are without the VAT. Anybody here used the Amazon Currency Converter? I've not seen that offered before.

I tried it. My bank posted the exact amount Amazon charged in US dollars thus avoiding any foreign transaction fees. However, the exchange rate was higher than the XE converter. Next order, I let my bank do the math and came out a couple bucks better than the amount Amazon would have charged, even with the 1% bank fee. I guess any advantage depends on what sort of fees your bank charges and what the exchange rate is doing. Amazon locks it in at the moment of purchase and I suppose that is reassuring to some.

Do all banks charge a currency charge? I use a Greendot Mastercard that I transfer paypal money into, and I haven't seen any seperate charges. Would the fee always be a seperate charge or could it be included in the total it shows to Amazon?

Regarding Smiley's People and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: picture quality is very good on the R2 versions considering the 16mm source. I certainly didn't see blockiness when I saw them. The latter has rather short episodes, some of them lasting less than 40 minutes each, so "cramming" under three hours onto one disc doesn't look all that bad ;-)

Obviously not, but you can certainly get a sense of the quality. The R1 was on three discs and I would call the quality poor. I can only imagine how much worse it would look if the series were crammed onto two discs as it is in R2.

Fwiw, I did find the thread on HTF that goes into all this (see especially post #56).

Personally, I'll hold out for a nice restoration and English subtitles.

almost every bank and credit card in the US is charging it now. mine varies from 1% to 2% depending what card I use. and for all my cards and bank they show up as 2 transactions. besides it doesn't mean that the banks or credit card companies don't have their own exchange rate that they use so it might not match xe. that's the other reason I went with it.

So is this 15% off anything on their site? Even the marketplace?

No problems here. Not had to wait more than 3 days. Dont know why things would be slow at the moment. Christmas is over and the recession is biting hard. You would think that they have got less work to do now so shipping should be quicker.

Just came across the Russ Meyer set for £39.47. 18 movies on 12 discs that's 61% off from the normal price. I've been watching the price on this on for a while, so yay for me!

I recommend the Quatermass Trilogy box set for about 9 pounds, it's two full series and the surviving episodes of the first series, it's about 13 hours of episodes, plus a great documentary on Nigel Neil that runs about an hour.
