I assume they are not enforcing this, since it sounds like people have ordered some of these items in the US already...

I've bought a lot of stuff from amazon uk, and i've never had an instance where one of my selected dvds / books wasn't allowed to be shipped. Although I did try to buy a cheese knife one time, and that wasn't allowed to be exported overseas. 'Twas a nice cheese knife too...

Yeah, you can't export toys either. I was going to buy a small book and a calendar with this order, but the book added 3 pounds to shipping, and the calendar added 6 pounds!!! That's ridiculous...

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

I just placed another order yesterday (already shipped) and thought I would point out a great price on a series I've never heard of but bought because of the great reviews and price. Jekyll : Complete BBC Series 1 is on sale for $5, it is a 2 disc set w/ 6 episodes and what looks like a good amount of extras. I found nothing but great reviews for this series on amazon (uk and us), imdb, and here (DVDtalk reviewer recommended it for the DVD Talk Collector Series). Amazon.com is selling the set for $24, so I felt like I was stealing it from them for $5.

My order:

The Deer Hunter (Special Edition 2 Disc) - $7.70
Withnail And I : 20th Anniversary Edition (3 Disc Special Edition) - $8.70
Jekyll : Complete BBC Series 1 (2 Disc) - $4.96
The Princess Bride (Special Edition 2 Disc) - $8.20
Public Enemy - $7.94
The Brood (2 Disc) - $3.71
Nil By Mouth - $5.70

Total w/shipping: $59.83

Hope someone can use these recommendations

"Jekyll" is an AMAZING series with a great performance from James Nesbitt. Great buy!

So how are we expected to cut the cheese?

Thanks for this. I've been interested in it for a while, mainly because of the great cast. Besides James Nesbitt, there's Michelle Ryan (Bionic Woman, and soon to be on Dr. Who), Gina Bellman (Coupling), and Denis Lawson (Wedge from the Star Wars trilogy)

Anyone looking to buy books from the UK might be interested in http://www.bookdepository.co.uk, since they offer free world-wide shipping. Sometimes they have calendars, DVDs and CDs too...

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

Anyone have good suggestions for region free BD's that are not available in the US (or better version in UK), that are included in the 3 for 2 sale? I can only think of Predator 2, Almost Famous, Thirteen Ghosts, and Escape From New York (Region B though)...

I have a interesting question.
can region 2 UK dvds be played on a US Playstation 3?
I heard playstation 3 somehow overwrites region codes. any info?

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

And speaking of region coding, is there any site that shows whether a disk from UK is region coded or not?

It seems quite a few of the discs don't have any region code info on Amazon.co.uk.

No. And even if you got a disk with no region coding, the PS3 won't do PAL to NTSC conversion.

Assuming you are referring to Blu ray discs: http://bluray.liesinc.net/

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

If anybody is interested, Red Dwarf Complete Series is available for less than 30 quids after VAT's off. I'm still undecided on this, since I'm so backed up with my unwatched DVDs, I'd have to quit my job AND my family for at least a year in order to try to catch up.

Unrelated question: is there a way to figure if the disc has closed captions? Amazon does not give that info, and UK discs often don't carry captions. I'd love to get the Poirot Collection for my mom, and she needs those.

UK discs don't have CC, but most of them include subtitles

Ashes to Ashes S1 (the followup series to Life on Mars) is only £12.78. Not available in R1. I've thought of adding it to an order in the blu-ray 3 for 2 sale to spread out the shipping costs but I would still like to wait for the blu-ray which has not yet announced.

Do they include English subs? 'Cause it wasn't the case with quite a few British series I've ordeed before, including Coupling, Spased, and I think Black Books, though I'm not 100% on that one. Anyway, if there is a way to find out for sure, I'd apreciate the info. Thanks.

Thanks for spotting this - terrific series that I watched on BBC America! Definitely adding this to my next order!

It's quite unsure that any of the UK releases have closed captions. imagine how many US TV channels broadcast teletext signals.

For anyone wanting to check this series out beforehand it is premiering on BBC America next Saturday (March 7) 8pm CST.

Spaced has English subtitles, I own it and know it.
Black Books, according to www.dvdcompare.net has subtitles
Coupling, check out www.dvd-basen.dk for reviews. Not sure if season 1 does, but subsequent ones seem to.

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

I'm interested in the following UK BD's, but I have a PS3. I know they are all region free, but does anyone know if they have PAL content or if the extras are HD?
Spiderman 3
Superbad
Almost Famous
Predator 2
From reviews I've read, it sounds like Superbad is entirely in HD. I know Disc 2 of Spiderman 3 is in HD, but I'm not sure about Disc 1's extra features or the Menu. No clue about Almost Famous or Predator 2.

I have Almost Famous and Predator 2. All the extras of both play on my Samsung BDP1400. The packaging for AF says the extras are in SD and they are not high quality. The extras on P2 are not high quality and certainly seem to be SD.
