Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

Yes, I got plenty of BBC and other UK TV box set in the past few months. Really good deal.

Also, not exactly a hot deal, but some of you may be interested in

Ally McBeal - The Complete DVD Collection 49.98 lbs

since it is not available in US at all...

Apparently for the current costs, you could probably pick up a cheap region free player and still save money as opposed to buying the US releases.

Does anyone know if the VAT still around 17%?

BTW - thanks for the head's up OP. I need to pick up Chocolate (from another thread) and figured on throwing a few more into the pile while I'm at it.

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

Both the Herzog sets returned to their original $71.99 each at Amazon.com. I haven't seen any of the movies from either of the Herzog sets, so they are blind buys for me, and at 10.42 pounds each, hopefully a little less picture quality won't matter.

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

I see that there are two David Lean sets with some overlapping titles. Is there a quality difference in the sets? There is quite a price difference right now.

The David Lean Centenary Collection is the newer and largest. That appears to be the one to get.

Thanks, I found a thread on the criterion forum. It looks like the Centennial Collection is definitely the way to go.

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

I just posted my most recent order on another thread, but thought I'd put it here as well if anyone is looking for more ideas.

Shameless (Series 1-5) - $26 (recommended in the other thread and the price was too good to pass up)

Badlands - $4.30 (only Malick film I haven't seen or own...and you can't beat that price)

The Crow (2 Disc SE) - $6.22 (cheaper than the region 1, plus it has Brandon Lee's last interview not on the region 1 edition)

Sleepaway Camp Trilogy (3 discs) - $6.22 (been on a horror kick lately and couldn't pass up the price)

Lars Von Trier's E-Trilogy - Element Of Crime / Epidemic / Europa (4 discs) - $24.34 (one of my favorite directors and I've only seen bootlegs of Europa and Element of Crime, haven't seen Epidemic yet)

...shipping was $10 for everything.

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

Wow, some great deals!

Ended up purchasing the following, prices are in US$.

The Wizard Of Oz (3 Disc Collector's Edition) [DVD] [1939] $8.50
The Powell And Pressburger Collection [DVD] [11 Disc] $22.50
Hitchcock 14 Disc Box Set [DVD] $21.25
Ben Hur (4 Disc Special Edition) [1959] [DVD] $9.60
Toy Story 2 (2 Disc Collector's Edition) [1999] [DVD] $6.25
Toy Story - 10th Anniversary Edition [DVD] [1995] $6.25
Peter Pan (2 Disc Special Edition) [1953] [DVD] $10.20
Shameless - Series 1-5 - Complete [DVD] [2003] [16 Disc] $19.50
Friends: Complete Season 1-10 (30 Disc Box Set) [DVD] [1994] $60
Gone With The Wind (4 Disc Collector's Edition Box Set) [1939] [DVD] $11.25
Film Noir Collection [DVD] [9 Disc] $18.75
Directed By Douglas Sirk Box Set [7 Disc] $11.25
*Superbad [Blu-ray] [2007] $7.50
*Closer [Blu-ray] [2004] $7.50
*Hostel [Blu-ray] [2005] $7.50

*Blu-ray was buy 2 get 1 free, so I pro-rated the price of those.

Shipping: $21.20

Total: about $250
Ended up with 107 total discs!

I was able to justify spending this much by selling my individual seasons of Friends (have 1-6), GWTW OOP 1-disc, and SD copies of Hostel and Closer, which will probably get me $80 or so total on Half.com/Amazon Marketplace.

Thanks for posting this sale, never would have known about it!

How are the transfers on the Pressburger set? As good as the Criterions for Tales of Hoffman/Black Narcissus/The Red Shoes? --Peter

Have a look at John Hodson's statement over at The DVD Forums (sorry, I am not allowed to post a direct link, post # = 7272720):

As said, yes, reasonable quality and an excellent way to get in on the cheap.

A Matter Of Life & Death - The only option, the R1 (with Scorsese commentary) looks becalmed
The Red Shoes - Not much between the R1 and R2 and the documentary is quite good
The Life & Death Of Colonel Blimp - similar story here, some prefer the R2 transfer.
A Canterbury Tale - The Criterion is considerably better in terms of repair to damage and extras.
I Know Where I'm Going - similar story here.
49th Parallel - and again.
Battle Of The River Plate - No R1. The transfer on the non-anamorphic Carlton disc is better than the older anamorphic Cinema Club disc.
Ill Met by Moonlight - The only option.
They're A Weird Mob - No R1.
I would say: go for it! I own it myself as well, but have yet to get around to watch it

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

That's the way I looked at it. Some titles no R1 option, the others if I like enough (I haven't seen a few) I'll pick up the Criterion most likely.

In addition to the above comments (made long before AMOLAD was released in R1 BTW), there is absolutely no comparison between the Criterion Black Narcissus and the transfer in this set, which has been breathtakingly restored; gorgeous. I'm afraid I can't say too much about The Tales of Hoffman (I only have the Criterion), but I've heard secondhand that it is comparable.

Then again, there's virtually no comparison between any of these standard def transfers and the blu-ray of Black Narcissus. Not to quibble.

Of course, that goes without saying (though they are from the same restoration, the only real difference being resolution), but it's not what the poster asked.

Re: Amazon UK Box Set Bargains

Thanks to the OP, I picked up the 14 disc Hitchcock boxset for under $29 US shipped! Much cheaper than the "Masterpiece collection" which seems to be the same set.

The Scanners trilogy is 7.18 Awesome deal, especially since 2 and 3 aren't available in R1.

No, there are significant differences in extras and the transfers; check out the Hitchcock Wiki.
