Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

No luck for me on the Maltese Falcon but I did buy the b&w/colorized Little Shop of Horrors, Felix the Cat saves Christmas(full price $2. Apparently the Christmas clearance was a limited offer for some reason.) and Prom Night III/Prom Night IV double feature for $2.

The Christmas clearance was for the Sony Christmas Classic titles only. I picked them up for 40 cents last week, but Felix & Father Christmas were regular price.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

One of my local BL's got in a few small table top box-trays filled with appeared to be all HBO's.
I got:
Loving Couples (MacLaine/Coburn)
Fort Apache The Bronx (Newman/Wahl/Asner)
The Hitchhiker Vol.2

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

Be warned, IMO Felix saves Xmas is AWFUL. It's not even comparable to the 50's Felix, much less the original. I could only sit through about 25% of it.

I second that - last December I pulled the DVD out for my 8-year old nephew, and he was enthusiastic to watch it...but after 25 minutes he snuck away to find a toy to play with.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

BL seems to be pulling way back on dvd's. The 2 stores closest to me once again are not getting any dvd's this coming week. For the store closest to me, i believe it's been around 6 weeks since they got any! & the other store has received 1 batch in the same time frame.

I have been told that they have a new assortment of video games at $18 & change that retail for $50 at Game Stop. I don't know anything about games & haven't been in to look.

The last widespread restock on dvds that I saw here in Los Angeles was the Warner Gangster/SpaceJam assortment. (I did see one store get in the documentary dvd assortment that DVDTalker Moklerman mentioned.)

Its' been dry for the last 2 weeks. Nothing new.

Could it be that the 4 for $10 deal was to clear out the dvds and give it a rest for awhile?

Anyone work at Biglots that can give us the scoop?

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

The store closest to me never got the Space Jam/Gangster batch. The other did, but they told me on the phone they hadn't & by the time I made it in..... None of our stores have gotten the colorized Legend batch either. I've also been in a couple further away stores the last couple weeks that usually are heavily stocked & they had nothing also.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

My Big Lots hasn't really had any new DVD stock for a couple of months now. The last "new" things they put out were a batch of HBO DVDs. Picked up a couple of Bill Maher DVDs, American Splendor, and one other Warner title during the 4 for $10 sale. I never did see any of the those Lions Gate titles. Or THX-1138.

They also moved the DVD case toward the back of the store, and put a big pile of mattresses where it used to be. The selection is starting to look really picked over.

At a couple of the stores, they took out the freestanding dvd display and put the remaining dvds back on the wire rack or onto the regular shelves.

Yes, they do seem to be pushing mattress sales. Several stores had them piled high in the main aisle. Each stack was a different style/size.

Maybe they needed the floor space, or could it be that the vast Sony dvd warehouse is now EMPTY and Biglots won't be getting anymore????

Again, anyone work at Biglots? Can you give us the lowdown?

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

They've had these dry spells a few times over the last couple of years. The last 6 months or so was simply outstanding and the most DVD inventory they've had. I'm willing to bet that there are several more shipments yet to come. We should see some new stock within 4-6 weeks.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

There are only so many movies the studios are willing to sell to Big Lots for those prices... would be nice to see some of the other studios start supplying cheap movies to the stores... (more Universal, Paramounts... and the worst studio for getting deals Fox)

I expect things to pick up again after a while... I first got into it midyear last year, then went months without checking, then it really picked up in November when I was lucky enough to blindly visit a BL that had put out not only the huge warner display, but a huge black friday display as well

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

I also noticed the "dry spell" I couldn't find any decent titles during the 20% off coupon. I went to a couple of BL stores and ended up getting groceries instead.

Not Good.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

the 20% off coupon was a bust for me. There was nothing for me to buy. All the stores were picked clean or I already had everything.

the new shipment is the legend films titles. Those just started appearing a week or so ago. I think we'll see another new shipment in another week

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

Mine had a few of the Legend titles, mostly John Wayne westerns and one copy of the double feature Killer Shrews/Giant Gila Monster which I snagged. Didn't see any other new dvds.

The same minor restock(?) here. In addition to those aforementioned titles there was the "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman" remake with Daryl Hannah that I didn't recall seeing before.

I also picked up the Killer Shrews/Giant Gila Monster colorized double-feature, but only because it contains the original B&W versions too ...well, that and it's supposedly the best transfer currently available.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

Has anyone actually watched a Legend John Wayne DVD? I know these are re-titled Monogram pictures that have been colorized. I'm reading good things about their other releases.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

Only one of the Wayne Legend releases is worthwhile for western fans..."Stolen Goods". It's a colorized version of "Blue Steel".

The extras on this disc are great. There's a half-hour episode of a Screen Gems produced series called "It Happened in Hollywood" hosted by Vincent Price. After wandering around the Columbia backlot, Vinnie sits at a movieola and introduces clips showing off-screen antics at a Smiley Burnette birthday party, an interview with Randolph Scott at a rodeo and some neat shots of Johnny Mack Brown showing off some of his gun tricks. Lots of other cowboy stars appear as well.
There's also a sketch from a Jimmy Durante special featuring Jimmy as a Mountie trying to capture John Wayne, the "North Woods Killer". Republic and Wayne stuntman Fred Graham turns up in the skit as well. It's typical '50s live TV comedy that's fun to watch and Wayne seems to be having a good time camping it up with Durante.
The DVD also includes old Western-themed toy commercials as well as the bank commercials and American Cancer Society ads that Wayne appeared in towards the end of his career. Also, there's a batch of old Wayne movie trailers as well.

The extras alone are worth more than the $3 Big Lots price...the actual features are colorized and re-titled. The black and white versions are NOT the original Mascot releases. They are the B/W version of the retitled colorized titles. "Stolen Goods" is the only one I've seen with any extra content.

I can't seem to find space jam or rebel without a cause. I have seen the gangster titles which I believe people have said where in the same update. Have lots of people seen these or no? Just trying to get an idea of how limit the release is.

Re: Big Lots Update Part 3

All the James Dean titles showed up at 3 Big Lots near me.
The Space Jam/Gangsters lot showed up at all 5 near me.

I'm currently in the Atlanta area. I was able to pick all of these up.

I saw a few of the Gangster titles at 1 store. I've never seen Rebel WOAC, Space Jam or any of the colorized Legend dvd's at any Big Lots. I did see East Of Eden a few months back.
