Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
The only resistance I encountered was that they didn't accept the $5 on the $15 dvd's because they went under $20. I didn't really complain since they let me use 4 of the $5 off coupons.

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
I can verify that my success rate in using the $5 coupon has plummeted compared to the previous sale.
It's a good thing that I filled in most of my needs earlier. |
Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
Saw my first real resistance last night.
Manager was nice, but stated that "a certain website was distributing fraudulent coupons and B&N was trying to shut them down". Told me that even the 10% coupons are not supposed to used on sale items. Not sure if his info was from corporate, or just his store employees talking. Every other company has their systems set up to only allow one coupon per user, the fact that B&N doesn't implement this same software restriction baffles me. Heck, their own website works properly with one per account. Either they are grossly incompetent, or they don't care about multiple uses. This "quirk" of their system has been going on for at least 8 years, right? They must know how easy it is to print coupons. Why they haven't fixed it is beyond me. |

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
It's kind of ironic. The sales clerk at the store I visited last night, was praising these semi-annual Criterion sales to high heaven. He was thrilled that they moved so much "dead stock" during these sales, as they seem to have a hard time moving these titles during the rest of the year.
B&N should open the damn floodgates with these coupons and encourage their use. If nothing else, they drive foot traffic into the stores, and generate additional sales. Heck, I've bought several books myself, just as a result of being in-store. |

My wife was able to grab YOJIMBO/SANJURO blu-ray for $28.xx. My store unlike some others seems to be only checked by me. A lot of the clerks remember me and hold movies for me and what not. |

Don't say that out loud. We're better off with the randomness, as at least most of us are getting some deals. Make official complaints like this and they will just "turn off coupons", like they did online. Do you really want everyone to be screwed? I'd rather a few people get a great deal than no one at all.

You made a massive leap from me, personally, having a desire for clarity with the coupons, to me wanting "everyone to be screwed." I didn't intend to say that and rereading what I wrote, I still don't think it comes off that way. My perspective was, and continues to be, how a company this big could continue have this kind of confusion amongst employees (and managers!) a year later (or, as you mentioned, 8 years later). |

I know that you were playing "Devil's Advocate," but I wasn't trying to make any "official complaints," rather I was stating how confusing it is that a company would be shocked at coupon use when it (this sale) has happened twice before already. When I quote someone, it's usually just to add some perspective to my comments/thoughts on the broad matter. I'm not really writing to or about just the person I quote or their comments. In matters of deals, it's just better to not rock the boat, imo. Sure, it stinks when I'm the one where the YMMV doesn't favor me personally. But I'm not going to call a store, or send an email, or even talk about it negatively. I just go in to every "deal" knowing and thinking that it is not going to work in my favor. |
Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
If you have a Bank of America CC, you might want to keep an eye on your snail mail. I got a 25% off one item coupon that expires 8/15. Almost threw it out.

I guess I just wanted to clarify my position, too. I think if I were to get rejected for the coupon, I'd likely still buy the disc anyway. If I'm in a store buying a disc, it's because I want to enjoy that film experience many times in the future. Off topic, I know, but I remember buying "Good Will Hunting" on DVD for $35.99 when DVDs were on one small wire rack in Circuit City. I've told some people that story and laughed about it, but I'd say that in the decade+ that I've owned it, I've gotten more than $35.99 worth of enjoyment. To me, most Criterions will have more than $19.99 value to me. I understand what you are saying, I guess that, personally, I like having the knowledge going in what it's going to cost. I also like your perspective: assume it's going to be $17.99 (membership), proceed accordingly with coupon. Again, I still haven't made a purchase or gotten rejected, so it's more speculation than reality for me. |

And I think this is probably why a lot of stores are more lenient about the coupon use on these titles. Each cashier I've spoken to has said that they have a hard time moving the Criterion discs even during the sale, much less the rest of the year. This one store certainly isn't selling many of the Criterion Blu-rays. It looked like there were very few Blu-rays that had moved in the days between my visits. This is pretty much what happened to my store as well. I don't think they move that much DVD stock since the msrp is so high. They must have been real happy that I was buying a bunch of Criterions and they were almost encouraging me to use the coupon on separate transactions. It probably didn't hurt that I purchased a $70 gc to pay for most of my Criterions. They pretty much have all the Criterion BD there except for A Christmas Tale and Chungking Express. They don't have a lot of the older criterions in there so I have to special order them. I've probably made back the $25 in membership by using those coupons. It's not like I buy a lot of Criterions either. They'll probably have a sale at least once a year (probably more) considering that it is profitable for bn. |

Which NYC stores are still taking the coupon? Thanks in advance.
Union Square is hard but depending on clerk, can be possible Fifth Ave. is pretty good (No luck at all last year!) Citicorp is worse than last year Lincoln Center shot down the one time I tried Take 1 title up to register and test the response, then make a second purchase using the other coupon. |
Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
Was able to use the $5 off $20 on Che ($22.50 before coupon) and the 15% off coupon on 8 1/2 in the same order. That's the best I could do (I did try multiple 15% off coupons and was denied). I tried to use two $5 off $20 coupons but was told that 8 1/2 was $18 so I couldn't use it. I went back later that evening before seeing Inception (around the corner from B&N) and used another 15% off with no problems, so that appears to be working no problems (one per order though).

Any new printable coupons on the horizon to replace the ones that expired yesterday?
