Could a mom & pop retailer regularly order Criterions to sell at 50% off?

We've just been spoiled in the past.

I think it's a combination of being spoiled in the past by the last sale and the 25% coupons that stacked with it, and the fact that Criterions could be viewed as overpriced when compared to other DVDs and BDs.

Many people here average a few bucks a DVD and $5-10 a BD, so $18 is a lot of money in comparison. Most of us here appreciate the quality put into a Criterion package, but it's still hard to pay $18 when you're used to $4.

With exceptional releases (expected to be, anyway) like the Back to the Future Trilogy/Godfather, etc, how in the world do forum members keep their spending to $5-10 a BD? Do they mostly only buy used discs or something, in your opinion? $10-15 a blu, I can totally agree with as a reasonable range, but $5-10?? That said, I am very happy I loaded up on a fair amount of criterions so far at $13 each :)

I'll be brief, because people seem to get pissed when others talk about their per release prices, think we're bragging or something. It is used that helps for many, but mainly just reading this forum. I average about $8 per, but of course many individual titles are more than that. But by being patient and snapping up deals it lowers the average. Disney/Pixar releases are often less than free at release week with coupon stacking for example. I don't feel like I work that hard at it actually, it's all right here in our bargain forums. Others do better than I do by reading other bargain forums and jumping through more hoops, I just do simple sales/coupons, and used stuff from time to time.

One thing I have noticed with some of the people who talk about their averages is that they buy cheap titles they're less interested in because it lowers their average. Not something I'm interested in doing.

Think that estimate is pretty low unless you're getting all your dvds from big lots and I know BD are at least $10 or a little less usually. I'd have no clue what I "average" though I just buy what I like at what I think is an ok price.

I've been buying DVDs for 11 years now, and in the early days of DVD during the dotcom boom, online shops like Reel.com and 800.com gave out amazing deals which allowed collectors to buy DVDs for practically nothing (which helps explain why the dotcoms imploded, alas.) There were also bargains to be had from now-deceased brick-and-mortar shops.

Additionally, over the past decade I and others in this forum acquired a good chunk of our collections through cycling Columbia House memberships, before their new change in ownership made that difficult to impossible. With the right algorithm, I was averaging around $5 per DVD.

Sadly, with the advent of the Great Recession and the collapse of the DVD market, bargains are becoming scarcer, but they can still be found with some patience.

I think the truth is that many of these people (including myself) are more likely to wait for the bargain than to buy something on a whim. Patience always pays off --- and most stuff goes on sale eventually.

I buy what I want, but wait until it's a GREAT price. Lots of BDs are less than 10 bucks and with coupons you can get them for 5-8 (even on release date -- if the coupon is right)

Hehe...Those were good years. I definitely took advantage of Columbia House Memberships, esp. when they gave so many DVD's away for free.

But like Trevor said, it was a great sale last year when you could use those coupons and your membership really meant something. I went crazy because I believe there were coupons that worked on all items not just one. Now, I'm just using the AAA link and no coupons, membership was really not effective this time around since I don't have a story nearby.

Granted, I can't complain. I'm stoked about the sale and able to get things 50% off.

I've never seen someone admit that, but it doesn't surprise me. I'm a lover of "B" movies, so I've been buying "crap" since DVD days. But I never buy anything that I don't want to watch, even if it's only a dollar.

Never saw any logic in buying something just to artificially create a number or a pedigree, like the people that only buy foreign movies to make themselves look cultured, or a vast library of books to look smart.

No, not low, you just have to be patient and watch this forum. It's all YMMV of course, depending on the type of films you like. I buy a little bit of almost everything, love expensive Criterions and all the new blu-rays, but also buy lots of classic film packs at a couple bucks a movie, and direct to video horror titles for $1.50 used. So it all balances out to about $3 a film DVD, and $8 BD. Someone who didn't buy Criterions would be much lower, someone who only bought Criterions much higher. But except for these, I rarely pay more than $10 for a blu-ray, pretty much every release has been that price or less if you're patient and vigilent.

Really? I'd say the exact opposite. I've found almost everything I own in the past year cheaper than when I first bought it. This is by far the golden age of DVD (and BD) bargain hunting imo.

Exactly. A good chunk of my higher end BDs (Disneys) have cost me $5 or even less than zero. It's all about timing and reading.

So 50% off of MSRP for a Criterion isn't a great deal on its own? I disagree.

I don't want to rehash past diatribes, but I'll just say that no one should be surprised that B&N is cracking down, given all the "creative" coupon use during this and previous sales.

I don't think many would agree that 50% off Criterion is not a great or at least good deal.

50% off a Criterion is a great deal. For starters, they never lower MSRP so the value always stays the same. Second is that Barnes and Noble is the only place to have such a good sale on them.

So, while they may not be cheap compared to the newest releases from the big studios, 50% off Criterions was pretty much non-existant before B&N.

I wasn't speaking about the Criterion sale specifically with that statement, but since you asked I will say $19.99 is a good deal, while $13 to $15 is a great deal for your average Criterion DVD.

I'm not surprised they are cracking down and have sort of expected it could eventually come to more restrictions. Since May they were already beginning to restrict some of the coupons. Seems like since they changed the membership benefits things have been going slowly downhill. B&N is definitely making it more difficult to maximize your savings online.

<s>The extra 10% online through the Library link isn't working on Criterions anymore, are any of the other links? I guess Bing is still 8% through the 31st, right?</s>

My bad. I had it linked improperly in the thread in blu-ray bargains.

Thanks!

I received Che (BD) and Replusion (DVD) today. I was able to exchange the Repulsion dvd for the blu-ray in-store with no problems at all.

I should be getting Gomorrah (BD) in the mail tomorrow. And there may be a copy of Naked Lunch out there, but I can't check on it because I forgot the email address I used.

I'm going to hold off on ordering any more in hopes that Amazon price matches the sale. I'd really like to spend some credit, instead of cash.

In all the hullabaloo about DVDs, I think folks might have missed the fact that this is a pretty good deal to pick up some classics cheap too. There is a B1G1 on all B&N classics. The binding and print is nice and it's a cheap way to get some good books. Free S&H & 10% off thanks to the library link.

Yeah, I know this forum is called DVD Talk, but surely some of y'all read too ;)

Any chance someone wants to trade my open "Repulsion" DVD for their open or sealed "Repulsion" Blu-ray? I bought it last year during the first sale, before I had any intentions of going Blu.

I'd offer up the same deal for "Bottle Rocket" as well.

I'll pay for your Media Mail shipping.
