Nobody has seemed to get a CustService 20% for this cycle, but I keep an eye out.

Need a promotional offer to come in soon to use that $10 GC from the Christmas offer. Went in this past week and nothing was worth getting at those prices

Yeah, I've got some of those $10 gift cards, too. They expire 2-28, don't they?

Hopefully the new issues of Omni and Heavy Metal come out by then.

I hoping for a 20% member coupon tomorrow. I'd like to do a ship-to-home on the CC Silence of the Lambs while it's still $28.

Unless of course someone gets one of the CSR codes.

I'm pretty much in wait for the Criterion Flash sale since I easily have $50+ to get FS. Most likely date in 2/27 so a couple weeks won't matter for me.

Other options if you have a couple other items might be Target's expected B2G1 starting Sunday. $26 right now so $52 for 3 items doesn't seem bad esp if you have a Redcard to balance the sales tax.

In store, I can usually get the cashier to push coupons through on pre-orders. For whatever reason, they don't seem to enforce the website rules when I'm standing in front of them with the printed page from the Customer Service desk.

Thanks for the tip on Target.....that might be another option I wasn't aware of.

Wow, you guys couldn't even wait for the 50% CC sale in a few months? I only buy CC twice a year from B&N. Taking into account the 10% member discount and 5% credit card rebate, the deal is even better than CC's flash sale.

For me, it's not like the old days. Sometimes, I'm only interested in one or two titles each sale. Right now, SOTL is the only thing on the horizon that I want. With the current 30% discount, plus possible coupon use, it's not worth waiting until frickin' July.

It can be close once tax is figured even when no extra coupons are considered. When even 15% coupons at BN were allowed (or even the 5/50 coupons) it was a pretty easy choice to wait, but now there are marginal differences and some folks don't really want to wait another 5 months.
Some folks prefer to order Criterion Direct figuring more money goes directly to Criterion.

Criterion Flash Sale (twice a year) counting loyalty points ($50GC after $500 cumulative purchases) assuming most people order enough for 3 titles and don't live in a Sales Tax state
$19.99 translates to $18.17 per title

BN and assuming an average sales tax 7%
19.99 --21.38 after tax
with Member -- 19.24
add 5% BN CC -- 18.28 (not sure if the 5% includes tax)
if you don't have a BN CC, but buy 10% discounted GC which is pretty easy to accumulate - 17.32

Target B2G1 assuming the $25.99 price hold. Assuming a 7% sales tax
51.98 -- 55.62 after tax for 3titles -- 18.54
with Redcard 52.84/3 title --17.61

I think you are overlooking the fact that one can also use the BN CC to buy discounted BN GC. That's what I do during the holiday season every year and load up on GCs to be used the entire ensuing year.

The difference may not be that big on a per disc basis, so I can certainly understand not wanting to wait if you have just one of two releases you are interested in buying. For me, however, I typically buy 20+ CC releases during every BN sale, and the small differences add up over the years.

Unless I was going to buy something there anyway, 10% is not a bonafide enticement to actually shop at Barnes & Noble. 10% off Barnes & Noble prices is a fucking joke. So instead of pulling their collective heads out of their asses and lowering prices to be competitive with other retailers, they lay people off. Bye bye Barnes & Noble, you're destined for the same fate as Borders.

I have to disagree slightly, because in the second half of last year, many of the things I get at B&N suddenly lost their online discounts. I checked other sites and it's across the board, not specific to B&N, so at least some publishers are no longer letting retailers discount their products. So the sudden de facto price increases last year were not B&N's fault.

I'll wait until tomorrow to see if the President's Day coupon is any good. I hope B&N's new restaurants are going to serve food with a lot of iron in it, because they're having discount anemia right now. A 10-15% discount if you pay 7% sales tax sure isn't much. The online discounts used to help, but losing what was a 25-40% discount from cover price (I mostly buy books) hurts. Any way you look at it, the result is going to be fewer sales.

anemia

I guess anemic discounts are the new normal. President's Day was usually a big weekend, I think because it's the last holiday in the quarter. And all we get is 15% off $40 or more online.

There are random titles with some additional discount offer - there was one copy of 'Salem's Lot' with a red sticker of $9.99 and one elsewhere with a $14.99 price. The whole section was like a morgue, completely unattended. However, a lot of people were still buying books.

It's a mystery to me. You'd think there would be some corporate strategic analysis of why their sales per square foot are so anemic in the media department. With actual B&M stores right in the same area as most B&N stores (BB, Target, WM, etc.), it would seem to be fairly obvious.

The two Barnes and Noble stores in my area don't even have a music and movies section - just a section for (overpriced) vinyl and small display with new release CDs (typically $15.99 - $16.99 despite being available down the road for around $9.99) and movies. There are a few BN stores a little farther from where I am that have a media but I hate how their prices are through the roof. Even with their coupons it's rarely ever worth it.

As far as that Salem's Lot disc goes, assuming it's the Blu-Ray of the 1979 version, I found it in the Blu-Ray dump bin at Walmart for $7.88 a few months back.

Holiday numbers

BN released their official third (holiday) quarter numbers. Remember what they're calling a "strategic turnaround plan" is firing their employees and selling $14 grilled cheese sandwiches. Sure, their demise has been predicted for a decade or two, but this time it seems different.

'The plan includes a new store labor model that provides greater flexibility and better customer service by eliminating tasks and allowing booksellers to focus more on customers' but we are only having a token number of employees in the stores and we're not changing our pricing and sales model (except for the new cheese sandwich) or reducing our corporate personnel since, y'know, they do all the hard stuff...
