Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
I don't know for a fact, but my impression over the past few months has been that BN has jacked up its prices on all releases of DVDs/blurays by a good 20% to 30% generally, compared to before. Consequently, even after applying the 15% or 20% coupons, there is hardly any disc to be found on BN whose price stays competitive with any number of retailers, let alone Amazon and Deep Discount.
As far as DVDs/blurays are concerned, I guess all BN is good for these days is the Criterion sale. Let's hope that that doesn't go away anytime soon. |
Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
B&N's DVD and BRs have always been MSRP.
I haven't noticed them charging a premium over MSRP. |
Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
As an avid CD consumer, I have noticed different pricing strategies on their music. They've weeded out many of the cheaper budget CDs from their inventory and generally are pricing new releases closer to full list these days. A year or two ago, they were actually fairly competitive on music pricing. It seems to have changed sometime around the Christmas shopping season when they decided everything would be near full price again.

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
At my B&N, they've pretty much eliminated CDs; they are pretty much relegated to one little corner. Most of the space in the music section is devoted to vinyl.

I haven't noticed them charging a premium over MSRP. I'll give a specific example at the moment: The Wire bluray boxset, certainly a mainstream popular item, has a MSRP of $200. One can get it on Amazon for about $80, and on Deep Discount for about $150 (before the 15% discount currently available). How much is it selling on BN? A whopping $190. Who in their right mind would buy it from BN? An even more interesting question: why would BN even bother to sell it at that price? |
Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
Like many older retail chains, Barnes & Noble's entire strategy is aimed at capturing casual shoppers that don't know any better. It was a business model that worked fairly well before the rise of instant price comparisons could be accessed on the Internet through your smartphone. Borders had much the same model and failed several years ago. It has only been B&N's more refined branding that has enabled it to survive this long.
That is what has driven their profitability lower. Older consumers aren't quite as savvy to instantly check Amazon or whatever when they are out shopping. But younger educated professionals, once the core of their business, are not going to overpay $20 more for a DVD or book when it can be shipped to them much cheaper. |

I mostly buy books, and noticed many publishers erased their online discounts late last year. Not limited to B&N, but across the board, so B&N's coupons are still better. Oh, and I got back on the member e-mail list last month after being removed in late 2013. Back when coupons were reusable, I didn't care that much, but now that they're not, I made an effort. The key seems to be persistence - I tried different things like online chat support and e-mail support, and finally got someone who actually fixed it. So if you don't get member e-mails, keep trying! Also, I tried to get snail mail coupons again. This year, they've sent out two sets, and I didn't get either. So I tried to get back on that list, too. But I will not know if succeeded until they sent out another set of coupons, probably around the Fourth of July holiday. One way B&N could improve is to treat its members better. |
