Ironically, that's the best discount I've gotten on a Criterion in the last three sales- and the first time in as many sales I haven't had a membership.

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
Thanks again, LASER. Was able to pick up Anatomy of a Murder, Weekend (Godard), Children of Paradise, Sweet Smell of Success...all blind buys. With no membership, I've been pretty slow on making purchases, but this sweetens the deal just enough to make me bite. I picked up Rashomon and In the Mood for Love earlier in the week, in store, with no coupons. It was certainly a strange feeling to "only" get a 50% discount as I'd never been rejected for a coupon before...and, I suppose I still haven't.

How strict is the 'one use per billing address' rule and how do they keep track of it? I'm not a B&N member. Will they ask me for my address?
I'm wondering if I can make several visits if I want to buy more than one item.

Depends on the cashier if you are trying to use the coupon multiple times on the same visit. Typically you can get away with using it at different times/days/cashiers.
On the coupon it says the discount will be applied to the highest priced item.

I think 30 percent is the best non member coupon B&N gives, so i should probably hop on it for the criterion sale? or do they sneak in a 40 percent once in awhile?

I'm a non-member and I think 30% off on top of the 50% off sale is about as good as it gets. It wouldn't have even happened if the sale wasn't extended a week. (I think due to Hurricane Sandy.) Lastly, in the past, I think Criterions might have been excluded from coupons during the 50% off sale. The universe has aligned in our favor.

Just when it seemed like the love was gone, along comes a Criterion sale extended into Black Friday with a generic 30% coupon. Looking forward to reading about some epic hauls.

Got denied using the $8 off $40 movie on Heaven's Gate. Manager came over and said it has to be $40 or higher after any other discount. Tried to argue the wording on the coupon, but this was more of a "I'm nearby so I'll try this coupon here" deal. Oh well, 30% off will still be pretty sweet come this weekend.

When did B&N stop offering cashback? It is gone from EVERY cashback site now... Usually they give double CB this time of year. But nada, zip, zero...

I'm tempted to use the 30% coupon on the Dick Van Dyke Show Complete Series Blu-Ray set. It's already 30% off and another 30 puts it at a decent price. It's still a lot of money....

Thanks again LASERMOVIES for all your work in wrangling these B&N coupons.
With the 30% coupon I was able to bring to the price down on The Complete Red Green Show - High Quantity Collection down to $126 before tax; a fantastic deal considering the MSRP is $300. My dad is going to be thrilled to get this on Christmas.

Heaven's Gate inquiry for those of you who have seen it.
I am hearing it's more of a character study and not a traditional western, which I'm okay with. However, I see comparisons to it being like "Days Of Heaven" which to me was beautiful to look at, but too boring for my personal tastes. But then on IMDB, there's a thread stating if you loved "Barry Lyndon" then you will love Heaven's Gate. BL is a great movie in my opinion, so that has me leading towards blind buying Heaven's Gate. So I'm just looking for some advice as to where the movie stands. I'm okay with slow building movies, but I'm not a fan of movies that are shall I say, a bit more on the poetic side ala "Thin Red Line." Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would rent it to see if you like it first. Not worth a blind buy. So many other better choices. I wouldn't compare it to Barry Lyndon. Perhaps only that both are beautifully filmed. Days of Heaven is a better movie as is Barry Lyndon. I would only consider it after I get my other top choices first.

Re: HEAVEN'S GATE...I totally agree that a comparison to BARRY LYNDON is off the mark except that both have what a lot of people would call "slow", deliberate pacing. Although I love both films now, I have to admit that I like them more on repeated viewings than the first time (like sex, they get better!).
You might want to take the advice to rent before buying, but the price is awfully good with the sale combined with 30% coupon.
HG is one of those movies (like BL) that draw you in...sure, it's self-indulgent of Michael Cimino, but it also has moments of extreme beauty. It really is a matter of taste...I could watch the roller-skating scene repeatedly, but some think it goes on way too long (probably) and others think it's just ridiculous to begin with. You either love or hate this movie.
I think a better comparison might be to Cimino's own DEER HUNTER. The opening "Harvard" scene goes on what seems like forever, but then the opening scenes of DH seemed to do the same on first viewing. It's like going on a trip to a new place...seems to take forever the first time but gets faster each return trip.
Despite some scenes that linger too long & a flawed opening & closing (I could have done without the entire epilogue), my main objection to the film was in previous prints that, despite the presence of a renowned cinematographer, seemed to be filmed though a filter of dust. The review of bluray.com indicates that a lot of problems have been corrected & that the Criterion looks like a new film. That was what I was hoping to hear.
I'm also looking forward to the extras. Aside from tidbits about the making of the film, there should be a lot of fascinating history (including the disastrous release of shortened prints, the savage public reaction, the infamous blaming of the film for bringing down the studio, etc.). For those reasons alone, HG fits Criterion's requirements as an example of "important work of cinema".
On the other hand, you might find it to be like Thin Red Line, although I don't think it attempts to be as "poetic".

Re: Barnes And Noble Coupon Thread Part 2
Thanks for the Heaven's Gate replies everyone. The tough part, is I'm not sure where I'd be able to watch the new restored edition. All rental stores would only carry the disastrous early DVD. I found the opening wedding sequence of the Deer Hunter to be beyond tedious, so maybe I should avoid HG. However, with the discount and 30% off, I could probably buy it, watch it, and if I hated it, sell it and make my money back at the very least.

..i bought the new criterion release of heavens gate and the sub-titles are all missing as in the previous dvd release...i will return the dvd, this is a travesty for criterion to release this without the sub-titles spoken by the immigrants...

Grabbed a Gate today with the 30% coupon so it was $15.xx.
The lady was nice enough to hand me the coupon back. Not that it matters but now I don't have to print another one.
