Yep those high prices can come back to nip them in the ass. This is the time for shoppers to come to their sites and if they see high prices they may never come back.

Not including stockouts is this current deal is another thing that will piss people off (as if the consumer should be responsible for their stock management). At least DDD doesn't pull that nonsense

DDD doesn't jack up prices this much and take away free shipping on sale items.

...They don't take away free shipping, but they still do raise prices and remove items from their sales.

Is there a reason that buy.com doesn't have the new James Bond ultimate collection vol 1 and 2?

That's what I don't understand about the whole Google Checkout thing. Isn't GOOGLE the one that is paying the $10 or $20 discount? Presumably, buy.com gets some kind of kick-back from GOOGLE for the privilege of allowing the GCO. Why does buy.com feel they need to "cover their losses" by raising prices?

Wow, for once I was smart for ordering right away and not waiting... I was hoping to find more bargains today, but I bet most of the really good ones are long gone...

Well, I don't have an HD DVD player yet, but there are good deals to be had if you DO, assuming you can find 3 that are in stock.

Predicting my soon purchase of an HD player I was considering picking up:

Goodfellas (HD DVD) $20.73
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (HD DVD) $20.73
Serenity (HD DVD) $20.62

Free Shipping.
Google Discount -$20.00

Total: $42.08

Comes to about 14 dollars a piece.

it might not be as simple as this, the manufacturer may not wish the item to be sold at a given price, certain overhead costs may be more difficult to absorb as a percent of sales, google may not be fronting the entire $20 or may have a different setup charge with buy.com in the payment process, and so on.

I wasn't sure if those were the new ones or not, since the boxes are the ones from 2003 or so. Also the Vol 3 and 4 have the new pictures.

They raised the price on the HD Forbidden Planet tin set, too. Last night it was 39.xx which I thought was strange since the standard DVD set was 44.xx. Now it is 43.10, but On Order so no google discount...

Now I remember why I disliked Google Checkout. It took me about 200 tries to finally get to the checkout and then it declined my card (virtual paypal number) but of course, the $1.00 charge sure as hell went through. I tried it again and it declined again, but now it's showing up in my paypal account as pending. Who knows...

Anyway, it's for Smallville: Seasons 1-3 for $35.50 shipped. Thanks to the other thread someone on here just posted. I hate Buy.com but for less than $12 a season, I couldn't pass.

For those that just want a 10 off 30 deal, Alias S5 was raised 29 cents which actually is a GOOD thing. It is now $30.20 with free shipping, so $20.20 after Google...

EDIT: It looks like they removed it or something... It doesn't say On Order, but there is no link to add it to your cart... Very strange...

I see something odd - they have the Ben-Hur 4-disc set for $35 - but also have it with a bible study guide for $28???

Pair that with a $23 set and that's a pretty good deal.

Most of Buy's prices are just too high but I finally found a few things that DDD or DVDPlanet doesn't carry or are not that far off from their prices and was able to place 3 orders:

House on Sorority Row $9.98
Mr.Moto Collection Vol.1 (Mr. Moto Takes A Chance, Mysterious Mr. Moto, Thank You Mr. Moto and Th... $41.57

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (2-Disc Collectors Edition) $19.73
Lucy and Desi Collection (Too Many Girls, The Long Long Trailer and Forever, Darling) $20.25
Drive in Double Feature-Blood of the VampireHellfire Club $13.12

O Henrys Full House $17.54
House By the Cemetery $17.54
Spook Who Sat By the Door $17.52

That doesn't make much sense as it just goes from qualifying for the $10 off $30 to $20 off $50...net increase of $1. What an odd thing to do on their part...

True, but it was a better deal at $45 since you could find a low priced book/CD to push it over $50 and qualify for the free shipping and THEN the $20 off. Now it's no better a deal than getting it at DDD or Digital Eyes with the 20%.

Mary Tyler Moore (Complete Third Season) $14.00
Strangers With Candy Complete Series $41.05

Shipping & Handling : $2.90
Tax (DC) : $0.00

Google Checkout & Buy.com Holiday Bonus - $20 off orders over $50 (Bonus may not appear on Buy.com's emails.) -$20.00

Total: $37.95 7-9 day shipping
or: $41.89 2-day shipping

What do do?

Same 2 sets would be $50.47 after DDD's 20%

This promotion is offered by Google and they are taking the hit. So, in fact Buy.com just pocketed an extra $11 by doing this. I would also do this if Google is willing to fund the promotions and thus customers would still buy the item after the $11 increase.

When Mel Brooks Collection is @53 dollars at Amazon and @74 dollars at Buy.com their strategy seems pretty clear to me.

Take advantage of what deals make sense and move on away from these guys.
