Orion? Or more plausibly, Lightray?

Shazam's already been introduced in backup stories in JL, right?

Maybe it'll be Gay Gardner.

The most informed speculation I've seen is the gay character will be Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern on the new Earth 2. Or possibly one of the other Justice Society members in that universe. Robinson the writer has vaguely hinted about something of this nature coming up soon.

That would make the character iconic without really affecting the mainstream media potential of their famous properties.

Didn't Alan Scott react pretty negatively to his son (Obsidian) coming out of the closet?

i am fairly sure its not aquaman, ive read all his new 52 issues and he seems pretty into his wife and a previous female love interest

Re: Major DC Comics Character...out of closet?

a lot of the above suggestions are characters that only comics readers would know. if their intent is to pick someone recognizable to the normals i think it will be along the lines of shazam, alfred, jimmy olsen, etc.

Captain Marvel isn't known among non-comic readers. Heck, most people don't even get his name right which is why he is no longer called Captain Marvel in the new 52.

I'm not sure Obsidian exists anymore in the new 52 universe. The new Earth 2 is a world where the big three heroes are not around and so the Justice Society members are the most famous heroes.

At one time he outsold Superman, plus he had his own TV show and even a spin off of that tv show. I'd say he's fairly well known, especially to an older crowd, and certainly iconic. He's also featured in Kingdom Come, and both the Brave and the Bold and Young Justice cartoons.

Isn't John Stewart already in GL Corps? So he's not going to be introduced. Actually, wasn't Alan introduced already in Earth 2?

I realize there's no Obsidian (yet) but I just find it funny that Alan would be the subject of rumors. Here's the "joke" Obsidian pulled on his dad during Willingham's aborted run:

It will be Two Face. The twist is that each day, he'll flip his coin to decide to be straight or gay that day.

How about the guy in the Wonder Twins. Zan?

For size.
Spoiler:

Times have changed. DC got angry mail in the 1990s for depicting homosexuality in these pages. The editor protested that it was a brain in a robot body with an intelligent gorilla. It's hardly man-man love.

Re: Major DC Comics Character...out of closet?

Bleeding Cool is saying it's Alan Scott, the (new) Earth 2 Green Lantern.

Bleeding Cool

Yes, America, It’s Alan Scott

A few days ago, I ran semi-sourced stories indicating that the character who DC Comics announced as being reintroduced to the New 52 DC Universe as a gay man, was Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, who appeared in Earth 2 #1 briefly,

Well, at Phoenix Comic Con, I had a much stronger source confirm to me that, yes, it is indeed Alan Scott. On that basis I feel confident in calling it. Keep your Earth 2 #1 in good nick, and start queuing up for Earth 2 #2… right about now.

Of course the original Alan Scott, created by Marty Nodell in 1940, got his Green Lantern powers mystically from a green flame.

But the first person to make a “flaming” joke is out of here, okay?

He's my favorite of all the Green Lanterns! I have a hand-drawn & signed picture of him from Martin Nodell a couple of years before he passed away. Nice to see Alan Scott back in the news again.

Purely cover stories ... his wife and mistress are commonly known ***-hags. Its definitely Aquaman ... and they are changing his meager power of telepathy with underwater creatures to a form of gadar.

But once he's out of the closet, he can confront wood head on and not experience fear or shame.
